  • A video circulating on social media claims to show a nine-year old girl, along with a group of adults, being arrested and taken into custody for not showing their vaccine passes at the Museum of Natural History in New York City. As the girl is being led away by police, a protestor can be heard in the video saying, “You are traumatizing a little child.” Another protestor is heard saying: “Where are you taking her?” A third voice says “What kind of future do we want for your children?” as the police place the girl in an NYPD van that leaves the scene.

  • German prosecutors have launched investigations into 42 cases of alleged misconduct by senior Catholic clergymen in the country, including former Pope Benedict XVI, following the release of a bombshell report on child sexual abuse in the archdiocese of Munich and Freising. The report, which was released on Thursday, accused the former pontiff of failing to prevent abuse by clerics during his tenure as Archbishop of Munich and Freising between 1977 and 1982. Then known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, his alleged misconduct is in connection with four cases of abuse.

  • On Wednesday the North Penn School District issued a statement, apologizing for a teacher who was caught on a photo taping a medical mask to a child’s face. It called her actions “unacceptable.” An investigation showed that the incident was isolated and the teacher intended no harm, but her actions were entirely “inappropriate” and “unacceptable,” the school stated. The district also said it was addressing the issue with the teacher, but it wasn’t immediately clear if the school’s employee would be fired or face any disciplinary action.

  • Using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, researchers studied the eyes of nearly 47,000 people and concluded that the state of our retina may signal a heightened risk of death. The study, published this week in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, is based on pinpointing the difference between one’s biological ‘real’ age and one’s chronological age. This can be measured by examining the condition of the retina, the nerve tissue at the back of the eye that has cells sensitive to light. Over 80,000 retina images taken from 46,969 adults aged between 40 and 69 years old were analyzed through computer algorithms during an average monitoring period of 11 years. A proportion of so-called “fast agers,” or people whose retinas looked older than their real age, were calculated.

  • The number of places to search for life in our solar system could be expanded as scientists said they’ve discovered “compelling evidence” of a “stealth ocean world” on Saturn’s icy moon of Mimas. So far, Saturn’s Enceladus and Jupiter’s Europa have been considered the prime candidates to host alien life. Both of those icy moons show signs of geologic activity, which suggest that they have an internal heat source that allows the existence of liquid water under the surface. And water is known as the perfect medium for life. But Mimas – nicknamed after the ‘Death Star’ space station from the ‘Star Wars’ franchise due to a large crater on its side – hasn’t been showing any signs of such activity, being viewed by astronomers as “just a frozen block of ice.” Ironically, a study that was out to prove once and for all that Saturn’s innermost moon was geologically dead ended up coming to a completely opposite conclusion. “Turns out, Mimas’ surface was tricking us” and there are valid grounds to suggest that the moon hosts a liquid internal ocean, Dr. Alyssa Rhoden, of the Southwest Research Institute, said in a press release on Wednesday.

  • [Always “rules for thee but not for me”] Nine unvaccinated and infected members of staff have been evacuated to Buenos Aires, after over half the 43 scientists and military personnel stationed at an Antarctic facility in Hope Bay tested positive for Covid-19. That’s according to Patricia Ortuzar, the polar researcher who heads up the Argentine government’s department of Antarctic affairs. None of those who tested positive has symptoms, but those who are unvaccinated have been evacuated as a precaution, Ortuzar told the AFP news agency. The remainder of those who are infected had been inoculated, and it was decided they should remain at the station.

  • Neuralink, the US neurotechnology firm co-founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has begun recruiting key employees to run its clinical trials, signaling that it’s inching closer to starting human testing of its brain implants. Musk said last month that he expects to have Neuralink brain chips implanted in humans sometime in 2022, pending approval for testing plans by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

  • The US Department of Justice has targeted Leonid Churo, the head of Belaeronavigatsia, the body responsible for Belarusian air traffic control, along with his deputy Oleg Kazyuchits, and two unknown officers of the state security services. They are accused of conspiracy to commit aircraft piracy, and are alleged to have engineered the diversion of Ryanair Flight 4978 to arrest a “dissident Belarusian journalist” who was on board. On May 23, a Ryanair flight from Athens to Vilnius was forced to make an emergency landing in Minsk, due to an alleged bomb threat. It was later discovered that there was no explosives on board. According to the Americans, the danger was fabricated by the Belarusian authorities in order to arrest passengers Roman Protasevich, an opposition activist, and his girlfriend, Sofia Sapega.

  • England’s Plan B measures are to end from next Thursday, with mandatory face coverings in public places and Covid passports both dropped, Boris Johnson has announced. Mandatory Covid passports for entering nightclubs and large events would end, though organisations could choose to use the NHS Covid pass if they wished; People would no longer be advised to work from home and should discuss their return to offices with employers; Face masks will no longer be mandated, though people are still advised to wear coverings in enclosed or crowded spaces and when meeting strangers; From Thursday, secondary school pupils will no longer have to wear face masks in classrooms and government guidance on their use in communal areas would be removed “shortly”. Further announcements on the easing of travel rules and restrictions on care home visits in England are expected in the coming days, Boris Johnson added.

  • A man and his two sons have been brutally hacked to death in the Indian state of Telangana by a group of men allegedly over suspicion of practising black magic. Locals killing people on suspicion of black magic is a regular event in Telangana, where more than half the population lives in villages. The state police have launched many public awareness campaigns in the past two decades. But not much seems to have changed.

  • A Boeing 777 carrying 143 people (129 passengers and 14 crew) had travelled approximately 500 miles from Florida, before aborting its route to Heathrow and turning back. An American Airlines plane flying from Miami to London had to turn back to the US because of a disruptive passenger who “refused to comply with the federal mask mandate”, the airline’s corporate communications manager Laura Masvidal stated. The maskless passenger, which caused the whole ordeal, was described by CBS Miami as a woman in her forties. She was escorted off the plane but has not, so far, been charged by the police. However, she was reportedly added to the company’s internal no-fly list pending further investigation.

  • A group of researchers from the Jagiellonian University in Poland and the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras have managed to solve the “unsolvable” maths problem known as “Euler’s officer problem” using the famous Schrödinger’s cat thought experiment. In case you didn’t know: Schrödinger’s cat was a thought experiment designed to show peculiarities of quantum physics. According to it, a cat in a closed box with a radioactive poison can be considered both dead and alive until the box is opened in a world of quantum physics and add a quantum entanglement into the mix.

Bionic Robot

A new electric-powered quadrupedal bionic robot has been developed by China, allegedly the largest and heaviest of its kind. It’s designed to help with deliveries and reconnaissance operations in complex conditions deemed too risky for human soldiers, as revealed by Chinese Central Television (CCTV). According to the reports and footage of the bot, the stocky four-legged device – dubbed “a mechanical yak” – stands almost as tall as an adult man and can carry up to 160 kilograms (334 pounds) while running at a speed of up to 10 kilometers (six miles) per hour.
