  • The US has reportedly warned its allies that Russia is planning to deploy a nuclear weapon or a mock warhead into space sometime this year, Bloomberg claimed on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources. US media reported last week that American intelligence had obtained information that Russia may already have deployed undisclosed anti-satellite weapons, possibly including nuclear weapons, to Earth’s orbit, or that it is planning to do so. Moscow has firmly denied the allegations, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has suggested they are simply a ploy to convince US lawmakers to approve further military aid to Ukraine.

  • There’s one last place Planet 9 could be hiding. A recently submitted study to The Astronomical Journal continues to search for the elusive Planet Nine (also called Planet X), which is a hypothetical planet that potentially orbits in the outer reaches of the solar system and well beyond the orbit of the dwarf planet, Pluto. The goal of this study was to narrow down the possible locations of Planet Nine and holds the potential to help researchers better understand the makeup of our solar system, along with its formation and evolutionary processes. So, what was the motivation behind this study regarding narrowing down the location of a potential Planet Nine? Dr. Mike Brown, who is a Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor of Astronomy at Caltech and lead author of the study, tells Universe Today, “We are continuing to try to systematically cover all of the regions of the sky where we predict Planet Nine to be. Dr. Mike Brown, who is a Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor of Astronomy at Caltech and lead author of the study, tells Universe Today, “We are continuing to try to systematically cover all of the regions of the sky where we predict Planet Nine to be.” Dr. Brown has long-believed exists: “There are too many separate signs that Planet Nine is there. The solar system is very difficult to understand without Planet Nine.”

  • US President Joe Biden tripped twice on Tuesday as he boarded Air Force One for a flight to California. Although the White House has insisted he is in excellent health, the 81-year-old Democrat has persistently refused to take a cognitive test during his annual health exams. Cameras at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland captured Biden stumbling while going up the steps to the presidential jet, barely avoiding a fall. The latest incident comes as the president faces public demands to have his mental acuity checked. Biden “should come out and debate and to show the American public that he has the cognitive capacity to do this very, very difficult job,” his former challenger for the Democratic nomination Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now an independent candidate, said last week.

  • German paleobiologists have called for an overhaul of the system used in naming dinosaurs, arguing the current nomenclature contains nearly 100 “potentially offensive” names, Nature magazine reported on Tuesday, citing the team’s still-unpublished paper. A group of researchers analyzed the names of every dinosaur fossil from the Mesozoic Era, defined as between 251.9 million and 66 million years ago, combing through 1,500 species for names they perceived as “emanating racism, sexism, named after (neo)colonial contexts or after controversial figures).” They found 89 “problematic” species, according to Nature, amounting to less than 3% of the names analyzed. A dinosaur species might be deemed problematic simply because its name was based on the colonial name for the area where the fossil was discovered, the researchers explained, lamenting that “indigenous-language names of places or researchers are often not used or are mistranslated.”

  • During the Cold War, intelligence officers were seen as brave defenders who protected their nation against external threats. But things changed when the public found out that agencies actually spied on allies and conducted experiments on their fellow citizens. Just like that, they ceased to be heroes. Blunders impact the reputation of intelligence agencies in a particularly negative way. One of the worst failures in the history of US intelligence came to light 30 years ago. In 1994, it became known that the KGB had recruited the CIA agent responsible for working with Soviet informants. As a result, the US organization had lost years’ worth of work. His name was Aldrich Ames, and he committed treason to ensure a luxurious lifestyle for his wives. According to certain opinions, “the consequences of the Ames case were as bad as anything that can happen to an intelligence agency – short of defeat in a major war.”

  • Germany’s decisions since the start of the Ukraine conflict nearly two years ago have cost the country more than €200 billion ($216 billion), the president of the German Institute for Economic Research, Marcel Fratzscher, has estimated. The expert told Die Rheinische Post that rising energy prices have been among the main contributing factors. For years, Germany’s prized industrial sector had been fueled by relatively inexpensive Russian gas. However, after Russia launched its offensive against Ukraine, the government in Berlin decided to forgo Moscow’s energy, switching to costlier alternatives from multiple sources, including American liquefied natural gas. In its article on Wednesday, Die Rheinische Post quoted Fratzscher clarified that in 2022, growth was down by 2.5%, translating into approximately 100 billion euros in losses, with the German economy shrinking to a comparable extent in 2023. According to Fratzscher, accelerating inflation in Germany has hit low-income workers particularly bad.

  • France has seized a luxurious villa in Cote d’Azur on suspicion that it belongs to Russian energy giant Gazprom, the newspaper Le Monde reported on Monday, citing French prosecutors. According to the report, Villa Maria Irina – previously known as Villa del Mare – is one of the most opulent mansions on the French Riviera. Estimated to be worth around €120 million ($130 million), the villa features swimming pools, a tennis court and helipad. The three-hectare property officially belongs to Russian-Armenian tycoon Samvel Karapetyan, who bought it in 2010. Karapetyan is the head of Tashir Group, a leading company in the commercial real estate development market in Russia. However, French prosecutors believe Karapetyan acted on behalf of Gazprom in purchasing the estate.

  • Ukraine has lost a significant portion of its territory and has suffered major economic damage during the conflict with Russia, Prime Minister Denis Shmigal said on Tuesday. He claimed that most of the people who have left the country “are not coming back.” In an interview with Japanese news channel NHK, Shmigal stated that Ukraine has lost “30% of its economy, some 20% of its territory, and 3.5 million jobs” in the past two years. In addition, 8,400 km of roads have been damaged and 2 million households affected by the fighting, according to the prime minister. Shmigal further estimated that more than 10 million people have been forced to leave their homes or flee the country altogether, predicting that many are unlikely to return. “They are not coming back to Ukraine from the European Union, from all around the world, because of security issues,” the prime minister said, reiterating Kiev’s calls for more Western munitions.

  • The British government’s new draft legislation declaring Rwanda as a safe country in which to resettle undocumented asylum seekers from the UK violates principles of the rule of law, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has warned. In a statement on Monday, Turk said the Safety of Rwanda Bill, which has caused division in the UK parliament, would limit the power of decision makers, including courts, to scrutinize deportation cases, risking a “serious blow to human rights.” The proposed law was introduced in December after Britain signed a new treaty with Kigali, seeking to address the UK Supreme Court’s ruling that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s initial plan, to send certain migrants on a one-way flight to Rwanda, was unlawful. The court declared the East African nation unsafe for refugees, blocking flights to the country, regardless of Britain paying at least £240 million ($305 million) to Kigali under the controversial deal that was signed in April 2022.

  • Modern Israel enjoys “the same encouragement, the same funding, and the same support” of the collective West like Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany before the World War II, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said. The president made the remarks on his own TV program With Maduro Plus, backing the assessment of the situation in the Middle East provided recently by his Brazilian counterpart Lula da Silva. “Powerful family names in the US, Europe and London supported and celebrated Hitler’s arrival to power in 1933. They encouraged him and allowed him to persecute my Jewish ancestors,” Maduro stated. The president made public his Jewish ancestry back in early 2010s, revealing his grandparents were Sephardic Jews who converted to Catholicism.

  • A Norwegian member of parliament has proposed giving the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Elon Musk, arguing that the South African-born entrepreneur has championed free speech with his acquisition of Twitter and by providing the Ukrainian military with satellite communications. In the nomination put forth on Tuesday, Marius Nilsen of the Progress Party argued that Musk deserves the prize for his “adamant defense of dialogue, free speech and [enabling] the possibility to express one’s views” in a world he described as “continuously more polarized.” “Echo chambers and yes-people do not bring forth the best ideas and cooperation, but decline and regression. Complementary views, opinions and processes of thoughts unlocks the best ideas,” Nilsen said.

  • As the US speeds towards the 2024 presidential election, the Democrats find themselves in a rather untenable position. Not only is the incumbent US President Joe Biden suffering visibly on the mental front – reminiscing aloud over meetings he’s never had with long-dead world leaders – but his second in command lacks the essential support of the Democratic base. While Biden’s approval rating sits in the basement at 39%, Vice President Kamala Harris has managed to outdo him with 37.5%. This should come as no surprise considering that Harris was polling at 1% when she dropped out of the presidential nominee race in 2019. How did she manage to alienate so many people within her own party?

  • A Netflix drama-documentary series that depicts the Macedonian ruler and military leader Alexander the Great as being in a gay relationship has been labeled as “extremely poor-quality fiction” by Greece’s culture minister. Lawmaker Lina Mendoni’s comments about the six-part series come amid a brewing scandal over its suggestion that Alexander, king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon, was involved in a romantic relationship with his general Hephaestion – a figure referred to by Roman historian Quintus Curtius as being “by far the dearest of all the king’s friends.” Speaking to parliament last week, Mendoni said that the series – titled ‘Alexander: The Making of a God’ – is “replete with historical inaccuracies,” which she said “demonstrates the director’s sloppiness and poverty of scenario.”
