  • Thousands of sparrows mysteriously fell from the sky in Pering Village, Blabatuh District, Gianyar Regency on the island of Bali, Indonesia a few days ago. According to officials, this is not the first case in Bali or Indonesia. Similar bird mass die-offs also took place five years ago in Denpasar and Tabanan Regency, Bali as well as in Sukabumi, West Java, in July 2021. Bird carcasses and droppings have been sampled for analysis to determine the cause of the incident. The sudden death of these thousands of small birds is still unclear. Diseases? Poisoning? Herbicides or pesticides? Weather? What about EMF? Given the sparrows live in large colonies, the transmission of a disease is fast and furious.

  • Germans prepare to go to the polls on September 26. Regardless of the result of next week’s election, it will represent a changing of the guard in German politics, as Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor of sixteen years, is stepping down from the role. The two main contenders for the chancellorship are Armin Laschet, who is Merkel’s successor as the leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU), and Olaf Scholz, the leader of the Social Democrats (SPD). A series of gaffes by Laschet has turned the polls on their head since mid-August. Beck points specifically to the moment that Laschet was caught laughing when visiting flood-hit areas in southern Germany. From that point, the CDU’s support has collapsed, and the SPD have been the principal beneficiaries.

  • Europe is bracing for a difficult winter, having turned to weather-dependent sources of energy like wind and solar power over fossil fuels while natural gas storages have run low. “It could get very ugly unless we act quickly to try to fill every inch of storage. You can survive a week without electricity, but you can’t survive without gas,” Marco Alvera, CEO of Italian energy infrastructure company Snam SpA, told Bloomberg. “The sudden slowdown in wind-driven electricity production off the coast of the UK in recent weeks whipsawed through regional energy markets. Gas and coal-fired electricity plants were called in to make up the shortfall from wind,” the Wall Street Journal reported. As a result, electricity prices have also been on the rise.

  • Hundreds of people have been evacuated from a soon-to-be-closed Vathy migrant camp on the Greek island of Samos, after a massive fire engulfed the facility just ahead of a planned relocation of its remaining residents. Six fire engines were sent to the scene to contain the blaze, which according to authorities had started in a deserted area. “There is no danger for those who are still there because the fire broke out in abandoned sheds in the western side of the camp,” the Greek Ministry of Migration said.

  • The Taliban has said that girls can return to secondary schools only after Afghanistan’s militant-led government creates a secure environment for them. So far, only boys have been allowed to resume their studies. “We are not against education of girls, but we are still working on mechanisms of how their school attendance can be possible,” Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid told Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine. Mujahid said that a safe environment and transportation must be guaranteed for female students before they are allowed back in classrooms. Shortly after capturing Kabul last month, the Taliban promised that women would enjoy more freedoms than during the group’s previous rule. However, only boys were allowed to resume their studies when secondary schools reopened on Saturday.

  • Michelle Hadaway – the mother of 9-year-old Karen Hadaway, who was found strangled to death in Brighton in 1986 – loaned her daughter’s clothes to former BBC presenter and editor Martin Bashir in 1991 after he said the network could do further DNA testing on the items in an effort to find evidence against Hadaway’s murderer. According to the Daily Mail, which investigated the incident, the victim’s mother gave Bashir “a bag containing Karen’s school sweatshirt, T-shirt, knickers and vest” and Bashir “even left her a signed receipt.” Ex-BBC journalist Martin Bashir lied to land bombshell Princess Diana interview.

  • Twitter has disclosed a binding agreement to settle a class-action lawsuit on Monday – which claims Jack Dorsey and others provided misleading user-engagement information to investors. The social network will pay $809mn to resolve the claims. The original suit from 2016, alleged Dorsey and others hid facts about Twitter’s slowing user growth while selling personal stock holdings for “hundreds of millions of dollars in insider profits.” Twitter says the final settlement agreement will not “include or constitute an admission, concession, or finding of any fault, liability, or wrongdoing by the Company or any defendant.” [LOL]

  • Facebook starts to censor “inconvenient climate change data”: Temperature increases from 2000-2019 resulted in 116k heat deaths, but also 283k fewer cold deaths, according to a study published in the Lancet. Facebook and its “fact-checkers” have scrambled: “Fake news”.

  • Italy to make its vaccine passport (“Green Pass”) mandatory for all workers from next month, becoming the first EU country to do so.

  • Biden refers to the Australian prime minister as “fellow down under” after addressing Boris Johnson by his first name at the AUKUS announcement.

  • Firefighters continue to battle the KNP Complex blaze as it moves in on the ancient Four Guardsmen trees in California’s Sequoia National Park. The National Weather Service issued a red-flag warning Sunday, with the world’s largest tree wrapped in protective foil, but flames have already reached the neighboring grove containing the national monument Trail of 100 Giant Sequoias. Over 7,000 wildfires have struck the state this year, torching almost 8,000 square kilometers.

  • A federal law enforcement officer was arrested carrying a gun at Saturday’s rally at the U.S. Capitol billed to support the suspects charged in January’s insurrection but will not be prosecuted. The 27-year-old New Jersey man is an officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He was arrested by Capitol Police for illegally possessing a gun on the grounds of the Capitol after people in the crowd reported seeing him with a handgun and notified nearby officers.

  • In the wake of the Inspiration4 private orbital mission’s success, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk offered a snarky reply when asked why President Joe Biden was ignoring the feat, when even his competitors had celebrated the achievement. While it lasted only three days, the space flight was widely touted as the world’s first and progressive in many ways, so one might think the achievement deserved at least a nod from the White House. But one of Musk’s followers noted that the “president of the United States has refused to even acknowledge the four newest American astronauts who helped raise hundreds of millions of dollars for St. Jude… What’s your theory on why that is?” “He’s still sleeping,” Musk replied, apparently half-jokingly alluding to Donald Trump’s ‘Sleepy Joe’ moniker for Biden.
