  • The “white Tic Tac” UFO spotted in 2004 by the US Navy has once again appeared – this time, over the United Kingdom. The anomalous cylindrical object in the skies over Leicestershire hovered briefly in the evening sky before shooting off at incredible speed, says witness Lucy Jane Castle.

  • Ghislaine Maxwell’s jail cell was flooded with raw sewage and she has been denied water by jail guards, her lawyer has claimed. Her attorney Bobbi Sternheim attorney took issue with the fact the neither Maxwell or her lawyers were granted a request to have a drink of water during their four-hour meeting on Sunday. “The hyper-surveillance of Ms. Maxwell and counsel during legal visits is highly inappropriate and invasive.” The letter was filed to counter prosecutors who in a June 7 letter stated that the jail guards can indeed watch Maxwell’s discussions with the lawyers, but they cannot hear them.

  • The 15 members of the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, have set the process of adopting a common currency in motion, envisaging its launch in 2027. One of the objectives of the Eco is to help Francophone nations of western Africa attain fiscal and monetary independence from France.

  • The Joe Biden administration is poised to offer gender-reassignment surgery as a standard medical benefit for military veterans, boosting transgender services. Gender-reassignment surgery has been available to active-duty troops, but the Veterans Affairs has been limited to offering mental-health services and hormone therapy to veterans diagnosed with gender dysphoria.

  • People waiting for planned operations and other non-urgent medical treatment in Moscow will be denied care in the Russian capital’s hospitals if they have not been vaccinated against Covid-19, but are eligible to receive a jab. Emergency care, along with anti-cancer therapy and support for those with blood diseases, “will be provided, without exception, to every resident of the city, regardless of their vaccination status,” the city administration confirmed.

  • While the United States and Europe waged a 17-year trade battle over subsidies to Boeing and Airbus, China poured money into its own commercial aircraft to take on the Western aviation duopoly. It took a common threat for the US and Europe to finally put an end to their dispute this past week, as the two sides signed a five-year truce suspending tit-for-tat tariffs.

  • China’s crackdown on cryptocurrency “mining” has extended to the southwest province of Sichuan, where authorities ordered cryptocurrency mining projects closed in the major mining centre. Cryptomining is big business in China, accounting for more than half of global bitcoin production. But the State Council, China’s Cabinet, last month vowed to clamp down on bitcoin mining and trading as part of a series of measures to control financial risks. Other popular mining regions, such as Inner Mongolia, have cited cryptocurrency mining’s use of electricity generated from highly polluting sources such as coal in orders targeting the industry.

  • Iran’s Bushehr nuclear plant has been temporarily shut down in order to undergo a “technical overhaul”, Iranian state TV said on Sunday. The emergency shutdown began on Saturday and is expected to last for “three to four days”, according to Gholamali Rakhshanimehr, an official from the state electric energy company. The shutdown could result in power outages, the official warned, but did not provide any more details. According to reports by Press TV, the plant was shut down three days ago, which led to a 1,000 MW power shortage. This is the first time the plant is reported to have undergone an emergency shutdown.

  • Hard-line cleric Ebrahim Raisi has been declared the presumptive winner of Iran’s June 18 presidential vote, which was marred by the disqualification of prominent moderates that paved the way for Raisi’s path to presidency. Concerns have been raised that Raisi’s rise to power could bring more social and political restrictions for Iranians, who already face strict limitations on their lives, including tight online and offline censorship.

Hong Kong

A young wild boar in Hong Kong has sparked delight by hopping onto a Hong Kong train and leading staff on a cross-harbour chase that included boarding two separate trains. The plucky piglet slipped under the ticket barriers of Quarry Bay station on Hong Kong Island on Friday (Jun 18) afternoon and somehow managed to board a passing train. Video of the incident showed it trotting down a carriage half-filled with bemused commuters as a hapless staff member tried – and failed – to catch him with a blue tarpaulin. Officials said the boar alighted a few stops later and then boarded a second train that headed under Victoria Harbour. The train was eventually diverted to a depot where officers from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department were able to safely capture the animal and release him back into the wild.

After a series of tests performed off the US East Coast, during which explosives were set off near the ship to see if it could endure the shockwaves, the vessel proved to be able to “take a hit”, according to the publication. The US Navy issued a statement confirming that the trials were successful.
