  • Two dozen diplomats from the US Embassy in Kabul sent a cable to Blinken on the 13th of July saying the collapse of Afghanistan was likely once American troops withdrew from the country by August 31. They warned the Taliban would quickly capture the country amid the subsequent collapse of the Afghanistan military. Furthermore, diplomats also reportedly outlined recommendations with regards to evacuation – but were, apparently, ignored.

  • Dr Louise Hawkins and colleagues at the University of Liverpool performed thermal and microwave examination on the rock samples from ancient lava flows in Strathmore and Kinghorn in Scotland. The new findings feed into the theory, dating back to 2012, that the geomagnetic field periodically weakens – approximately every 200 million years. In the previous study, the field data was from the last 300 million years. The results of a new study have been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

  • Twitter defines “state-affiliated” media as “outlets where the state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources, direct or indirect political pressures, and/or control over production and distribution.” The platform “will not recommend or amplify” accounts thus labelled, it states. Among those Twitter deems affiliated with Serbia’s government are the dailies Srpski Telegraf, Kurir, Informer, Politika, three free-to-air channels – Happy, Prva TV and B92, , as well as the news agency Tanjug. Serbia’s public broadcaster, Radio Television of Serbia, RTS, and Radio Television of Vojvodina, RTV, are also among those whose accounts are also labelled state-affiliated. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic weighed in on US-based social network Twitter’s move to start labelling accounts in the country as purportedly “state affiliated”. “I can’t wait for them (Twitter) to ban my account, so I can be another Trump in the world,” Vucic was quoted by local media as saying on Tuesday.

  • The Ever Given cargo ship will attempt to go through the Suez channel this Friday for the first time since it was released in July after being held up for months for blocking the waterway earlier in the year. According to the source, Ever Given is supposed to go through the channel from north to south as part of a convoy. The ship is expected to require 10 to 12 hours to pass through. Egyptian news portal Masrawy reports that the ship will be assisted by tugboats to make sure it passes smoothly.

  • The Queen’s legal team is warning British press against taking pics of the Royal Family at its private Balmoral estate, where Prince Andrew is currently holidaying alongside his mum, according to The Daily Beast’s exclusive report. Scandal-ridden Andrew arrived at Balmoral on 10 August, just a day after it was revealed that Virginia Roberts Giuffre had filed a lawsuit in the US accusing him of raping her as a minor. On the day of his arrival in Scotland, staffers at one major tabloid newspaper reportedly received a carefully-worded memo from their own legal department.

  • The UK’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has ordered the destruction of the alpaca after it tested positive for bovine tuberculosis twice. But Geronimo’s owner from South Gloucestershire believes the testing was flawed. Geronimo the Alpaca is to be executed on Thursday afternoon or later after a High Court in London dismissed an urgent application from its owner Helen Macdonald to spare her fluffy companion. The silky black animal arrived to Macdonald’s Wickwar farm in South Gloucestershire from New Zealand but has been in isolation since 2017 after it tested positive for bovine tuberculosis. According to the UK’s Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) department, the disease is believed to be “one of the greatest animal health threats”.

  • Facebook has temporarily removed the ability to view the list of friends for accounts from Afghanistan in an attempt to protect Afghan users from possible reprisal from the Taliban Islamist group*, head of the Facebook security policy Nathaniel Gleicher said.

  • The heirs of Edvard Eriksen, the sculptor who created Copenhagen’s most iconic monument, The Little Mermaid, have demanded that its counterpart that adourns the Asaa waterside in northern Jutland be removed and destroyed. The new mermaid statue, titled “Towards homecoming”, was placed at Asaa harbour four years ago. The author of the junior mermaid, which has become a tourist attraction in her own right, called the lawsuit absurd, suggesting that you can’t have a patent on mermaids.

  • Russian space agency Roscosmos will launch a Soyuz 2.1b spaceship with a new batch of 34 UK OneWeb satellites from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Friday night. Earlier in the day, the State Commission approved the upcoming launch and allowed the rocket to be refueled. The spaceship liftoff is scheduled to take place at 22:23 UTC. According to Roscosmos, the flight of the Soyuz rocket will last nine and a half minutes. After that, the Fregat upper stage in conjunction with the OneWeb spacecraft will separate from the third stage of the rocket and begin an autonomous flight. The deployment of satellites in orbit is expected to take slightly less than four hours.

  • With only 30 Covid deaths in nearly a year, Australia should be on top of the pandemic but tough, random lockdowns, and international borders closed into 2022 cause widespread misery and confusion. They’ve had the international borders shut since March 20 last year, leaving its own nationals stranded abroad and family visits off the agenda so that the chances of importing Covid cases was greatly reduced. Suburbs in Sydney are now patrolled by the defence forces alongside the police enforcing a strict lockdown worthy of a totalitarian regime. Curfews are in place in Melbourne, meanwhile, where a beleaguered population has spent more than 200 days in lockdown.

  • Residents of a city in the Tierra Caliente region, ravaged for months by a cartel turf war, prayed for peace alongside church leaders on Monday. Hundreds of families, at least 3,000 people, have fled Coalcomán in the last 11 days, forced out by violence and its related afflictions: shortages of electricity, food, water, and phone and internet services. The city is only about 50 kilometers (126 kilometers by road) from Aguililla, the center of a violent turf war between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Cárteles Unidos. Residents, municipal authorities and church leaders have complained that although state and federal security barracks are present in the area, local people have not been afforded any protection.

  • Proven wrong that social workers and psychologists can substitute for street cops, Democrats are now backtracking on ‘defunding the police’ efforts as crime rates surge. The social justice zealots of the Democratic Party, who took it as gospel that the majority of police officers are racist, argued that crime would disappear if society simply got rid of police departments. Seattle’s then-Mayor Jenny Durkan, who did nothing as the city’s police precinct was first attacked and then evacuated, described the descent into anarchy as a “summer of love.” That clueless comment – which aged almost as well as CNN’s “fiery but mostly peaceful” remark – forced Durkan into an early retirement. There are even those who suggest that all the talk about ‘racist cops’ was part of a ploy to create as much civil strife as possible as Americans were preparing to cast their votes in what was one of the most consequential presidential elections in recent memory.

  • President Trump Exonerated Again: After arresting almost 600 people and investigating for almost 8 months FBI admits Jan 6 wasn’t an insurrection and Capitol riot was not an organized plot. President Trump and associates had nothing to do with it.

  • Trump on new coronavirus booster shots: ‘That sounds to me like a money-making operation for Pfizer’. Former President Donald Trump blasted the idea of booster shots for the COVID-19 vaccine as sounding like a “money-making operation for Pfizer” in his most recent appearance on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartimoro. “Think of the money involved,” he said. “You know, when these [vaccines] first came out they were ‘good for life,’ then they were good for a year or two, and I could see the writing on the wall – I could see the dollar signs in their eyes of that guy that runs Pfizer.”

  • Osama bin Laden’s 2010 letter urging al Qaeda to NOT kill Joe Biden because he would be an incompetent President has circulated again. The missive also contained plans for two hit squads to take out then-President Barack Obama if he ever came to Afghanistan or Pakistan, thus engineering their preferred incumbent. Critics have highlighted the similarities between bin Laden’s predictions and Biden’s denial of warnings weeks ago that Kabul would fall within days, as well as a confidential memo of dissent from Kabul embassy staffers urging evacuation of Americans by the start of August.
