  • Astrophysicists at the University of Leeds in the UK have discovered an abundance of life-giving organic molecules in space, previously thought to occur only under rare cosmic circumstances. Their study revealed that these molecules have been collecting in abundance within “protoplanetary discs” of gas and dust that are known to orbit each star. All that’s left needed to spark life on a planet is water and a viable distance from a host star, also known as the “Goldilocks zone,” researchers explained. “It’s possible the molecules needed to kick-start life are readily available in all planet-forming environments,” said Leeds’ Dr. Catherine Walsh, who led the study alongside co-author Dr. John Ilee. Their work was published in “The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series” on Thursday.

  • Occupy Wall Street was, for many activists, the point at which the masses came closest to shaking the foundations of power. Emerging from a call to arms published by a well-heeled Canadian magazine called Adbusters (cover price at the time: $8.95 per issue), its grassroots credibility was questionable. When activists began setting up tents in lower Manhattan 10 years ago, inspired in part by the Arab Spring and in part by the sheer rapacious greed of banks that had gambled with Americans’ money, lost it, and demanded to be made whole, the narrative managers fell into two camps. There were those who cast it as a fly-by-night stunt by hippies who just needed a bath and those who – perhaps hoping to co-opt it for their own political purposes – hailed it as the rebirth of political activism. Occupy’s questionable origins helped sink it. Rumors of funding from the likes of liberal bogeyman George Soros (also alleged to be a benefactor of Adbusters via the Tides Foundation, which both the magazine and Soros have denied), big-labor interests, and even the Democratic Party convinced some its aims were not the overthrow of the existing system, but merely a further buildout of the existing parasitic structures represented by Wall Street. ~ Helen Buyniski

  • Appeals court overturns controversial ruling on child gender treatment in UK; doctors can prescribe puberty blockers to under-16s. On Friday, the court overturned a 2020 ruling by a divisional court which stated that under-16s lacked capacity to give informed consent to treatment concerning transitioning gender. The original case had been brought forward by Keira Bell, who claimed doctors should have challenged her more when she requested puberty blockers at a young age. However, on Friday, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the appellant, the Tavistock Trust, which runs the UK’s only gender identity clinic for young Britons, and overruled the 2020 decision.

News Burst 20 September 2021 - Russia Election Day

Russia

An election is a serious event, but some in Russia have decided to lighten the mood at polling stations, this weekend, by wearing the most ridiculous of costumes. Of course, no matter how you’re dressed your vote still counts. One voter in the Ryazan Region in central Russia arrived sporting a diving suit with a mask and flippers. A man in St. Petersburg was filmed wearing a massive costume of a ballot sheet, which was obviously too big to fit into a ballot box. He danced and chanted some songs and reportedly ended up being detained by the police. Many voters opted to cosplay famous pop culture characters, with cursed tentacle-faced pirate captain Davy Jones from ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ making an appearance in Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East. He really struggled holding a ballot with his claws, but was eventually able to fulfil his civic duty and called upon others to come to the polling stations too. The likes of Scandinavian god Loki and Marty, the zebra from the ‘Madagascar’ animated movies, were also spotted.
