  • Illegal migrants are often extremely ingenious in the ways they try to enter the tightly guarded US border, particularly in their attempts to remain undetected during regular raids at the so-called “stash houses,” where migrants live and wait until they are transported elsewhere. Texas Border Patrol agents from the Laredo Sector, along with the state’s Department of Public Safety troopers and Webb County police officers uncovered another stash house and captured over 30 illegal aliens, the US Customs and Border Protection reported on Wednesday.

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that three controversial farm laws will be repealed and urged protesting farmers in different parts of the country to end their nearly year-long demonstrations. In a television address to the nation on the occasion, Modi said: “[At] the parliament session beginning this month, we will complete the process of repealing the three farm laws”. Highlighting the federal government’s committment to the welfare of the nation’s farmers, the PM expressed regret that the authorities were unable to convince farmers about the benefits of the three farm laws. The three contentious farm laws are: the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers’ (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance 2020.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has alleged that western countries are using the ongoing immigration crisis at the Belarus-Poland border as a pretext for escalating tensions and exercising pressure against Belarus – Moscow’s neighbour and ally. “At the same time, they are violating their own obligations in humanitarian sphere”, Putin added. The president condemned Poland for using harsh methods against the migrants trying to cross the border, pointing out that there are many children among them. Putin recalled that Warsaw denounced the use of such anti-riot tools when Ukrainian law enforcement struggled to contain rioters back in 2014. “I just feel sorry for the children. [Polish forces] pour water and tear gas there, throw grenades there. Helicopters fly along the border and [Polish side] turns the sirens on at nights”.

  • Migrant flows to the UK show no sign of abating, with more than 24,500 illegal migrants already having entered the country, a figure almost triple the number of arrivals for all of 2020. UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has for the first time admitted her country is facing a “mass migration crisis”, pointing the finger at the EU over its open border policy. Speaking to reporters in Washington, DC, on Thursday, Patel berated the European Commission for failing to hammer out an effective plan on resolving migration-related issues. She argued that migration has been fuelled by free movement within the EU under the Schengen Agreement, which scrapped national borders among the bloc’s member states.

  • Vials labeled with “smallpox” were found at a Merck facility in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where vaccine research is conducted, but it is unclear why the vials were there, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Smallpox is caused by a virus that was eradicated from human transmission in the late 1970s after centuries of epidemics across the globe. It is so deadly that only two laboratories in the world are allowed to have doses of the virus: the CDC main lab in Atlanta and a facility in Russia.

  • Microsoft founder Bill Gates has warned that governments must be ready for smallpox terror attacks and future pandemics. He also urged global leaders to use “germ games” to prepare for bioterrorist attacks. According to Gates, the ‘germ games’ could prepare nations for bio-terrorism such as smallpox attacks on airports. He also suggested to create a new billion-dollar World Health Organization (WHO) Pandemic Task Force. [What are they planning?]

  • Joe Biden will briefly transfer his power to Vice-President Kamala Harris while under an anaesthetic during the upcoming medical check-up, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki has said. The process of temporarily handing power over to the vice-president because of a president’s incapacity was first ratified in 1965 after Congress passed the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution. According to the amendment, a vice-president will return power to the president once the president reawakens from the anaesthetic.

  • The German parliament voted to withdraw the American nuclear bombs from the country back in 2010. However, 11 years later they are still stored in Germany – and it is unclear where they are stored and how many bombs there are.

  • A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon – and this year, people in Argentina, Russia, and some other countries were able to see the longest one since 1440. Russian cosmonauts from the International Space Station have spotted the longest lunar eclipse in more than 500 years, taking photos of the Moon, overshadowed by the planet. Although it was a partial eclipse, at some point the shadow covered up to 97 percent of the Moon, so it was pretty close to a full one. “Right now, together with the people of Earth, we are observing a partial lunar eclipse. The best view on board the ISS is from the window of our new ‘Science’ module,” cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov said.

  • India’s largest port operating company Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) has said that federal authorities confiscated containers with hazardous substances inside them at the Mundra seaport on Thursday, 18 November. “While the cargo was listed as non-hazardous, the seized containers had Hazard Class 7 markings (which indicate radioactive substances)”, the company claimed in its statement on Friday. “Although the containers were not destined for Mundra Port or any other port in India but were en route from Karachi in Pakistan to Shanghai in China, the government authorities had them offloaded at Mundra Port for further inspection”, the statement from the company read.

  • Germany should “speed up” the process of issuing certification for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to avoid further surge in fuel prices, The Le Monde has cited Jeremy Weir, chief executive of the Swiss multinational commodity trading company Trafigura. Weir also expressed concern over potential “blackouts in Europe” due to the possibility of a “cold winter” on the continent.

  • US billionaire Leon Black, who maintained a relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has bought a mansion in London, the Financial Times reported. According to the outlet, the investor shelled out $28.2 million for the luxury house located at 93 Eaton Square, which is $2.6 million less than the asking price, the newspaper said. Black and Epstein have known each other for decades and the late financier advised Black on estate planning and taxes. After the Epstein sex scandal broke out, Black wrote a letter to investors of Apollo, saying he had a “limited relationship” with the sex offender. In 2020, he asked the company to conduct an independent review of his relationship with the late financier. The investigation revealed that between 2012 and 2017 Black paid him a total of $148 million for financial services and donated another $10 million to Epstein’s charity. The news comes at a difficult time for Leon Black, who this year stepped down as CEO of Apollo.

  • The Royal Navy was in a race against the Russians to recover a £ 100 million UK warplane with top secret technology after it crashed into the Mediterranean. A British pilot dramatically ejected from the F-35B Lightning on a routine exercise that is believed to have smashed up on impact in the sea but pieces of the destroyed aircraft would still contain highly sensitive features. Technology on the aircraft includes top secret radar and sensors that allows the F-35B to fly at supersonic speeds without being seen. It is the RAF’s most advanced plane capable of landing vertically and is the first that the UK has lost. The wreckage of the plane was found on Wednesday afternoon and is being protected by an Anglo-US dive team until the aircraft is able to be removed by the Navy, reported the Daily Mail.
