- There are various practices in Buddhism that differ from other religions. One of these practices, Sokushinbutsu, is when Buddhist monks mummify themselves while they are alive, through a meditation ritual. This practice is a very difficult method that spans thousands of days. Sokushinbutsu was a common practice between 11th-19th Centuries CE. Monk who wants to reach Nirvana; withdrawing himself from pleasures of world, he is slowly starving and then completely giving up consumption of food and water. Body of one of monks who succeeded in mummification was found in Himalayan region. Mummy, which belonged to monk Sangha Tenzin, dates from 14th Century and has a history of 550 years. Monks who went into seclusion to carry out mummification process; they chewed pine needles, resin, and seeds found in mountains. With consumption of these, fat in body is completely destroyed and person begins to mummify. Body, which is completely purified from oil and fluids, gets rid of substances that increase decay after death. After this process, body becomes resistant to insects and bacteria. In addition, monks drank poisonous plants and arsenic water to prevent bacteria from forming in body.
- The European Commission on Wednesday threatened Musk with a ban unless Twitter abides by strict content moderation rules, as US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen indicated that Washington was reviewing his purchase of the social network. Musk was warned that unless he stuck to those rules Twitter risked infringing the EU’s new Digital Services Act, a new law that sets the global standard for how Big Tech must police content on the internet. Breton reiterated Twitter could face a Europe-wide ban or fines of up to 6 per cent of global turnover if it breached the law.
- The Swiss economy ministry announced on Thursday that it had frozen $7.94 billion (7.5 billion Swiss francs) worth of Russian assets as of November 25, 2022. This is apart from 15 properties belonging to Russia’s sanctioned legal entities and individuals. The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) has also revealed data on the amount of deposits declared by Russians. “The sanctioned amount is only a fraction of all Russian assets in Switzerland,” Erwin Bollinger, SECO’s head of bilateral economic relations, told Bloomberg. According to the report, a total of 123 Russian citizens or entities reported 7,548 “business relationships” to the body, accounting for $48.8 billion (46.1 billion francs) in assets.
- A new US incentive scheme to subsidize local electric car makers risks driving a wedge between Western countries, French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Wednesday amid looming fears of a trade war between Washington and Brussels. Speaking at the French embassy, during a state visit to America, Macron said the scheme would have a negative impact on the EU by making it less attractive for businesses to invest in the bloc’s economy. The US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) offers $391 million of incentives to promote clean energy, including support for electric vehicle manufacturers. “The choices of the past few months, in particular the IRA, are choices that will fragment the West,” he said, adding that the EU and the US need “to co-ordinate and re-synchronize our policy agendas.”
- Elon Musk has claimed that a wireless chip developed by his company Neuralink could start human clinical trials in six months. The world’s richest man also stated that the biotech startup is “confident” that their device could restore movement in those who suffer from paralysis. Such a device could potentially restore full-body functionality to those who have a severed spinal cord, or bring back vision to people that had never seen, Musk claimed. According to the billionaire, who has also just become CEO of Twitter, the company has submitted most of its paperwork to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which ensures, among other things, the safety of medical devices.
- According to a new Morning Consult poll, which asked over 2,000 people about the foreign policy issues they wished the government would focus on. According to the survey, which was published on Tuesday, Democratic voters cared more about things like climate change and preventing another global pandemic, while Republicans wished the government would focus on immigration, terrorism and drug trafficking. Support for Ukraine only ranked sixth among Democrats and tenth among Republicans. It comes as the Biden administration has already committed close to $20 billion in security assistance to Ukraine and is seeking to push through an additional $37.7 billion aid package before Democrats lose control of the House. The incoming Republican majority has already suggested it will not support any more massive aid packages for Kiev once it takes over control of the House early next year.
- Twitter owner Elon Musk accused the platform’s former leadership of interfering in elections through content moderation and failed public trust on November 30. He promised that Twitter 2.0 will be far more effective, transparent and even-handed. The Tesla CEO’s assertion about Twitter’s alleged election interference came in response to comments made by Twitter’s former head of trust and safety, Yoel Roth, who claimed that the social media giant was not safer under Elon Musk. Roth delivered his comments on November 29 at a Knight Foundation conference, going so far as accusing Musk of running the company like a dictator. Musk’s answer wasn’t long in coming: “The obvious reality, as long-time users know, is that Twitter has failed in trust and safety for a very long time and has interfered in elections.” Even though Musk did not specify which elections he thought were affected by the social media platform, it was Roth who is considered responsible for suppressing the New York Post’s “laptop from hell” story.
- A fossil of a creature that existed millions of years ago may have shed new light on the evolution of arthropods’ brains, a study published in the journal Science has suggested. The fossil was discovered in the Yunnan province of China and belonged to one of the extinct worm-like creatures known as lobopodians that existed during the Cambrian period around 500 million years in the past. Having studied the remains of the Cardiodictyon catenulum creature, a team of scientists has announced the discovery of a nervous system and brain “comprising three cephalic domains, distinct from the metameric ventral nervous system serving its appendicular trunk.” “To our knowledge, this is the oldest fossilized brain we know of, so far,” said Nicholas Strausfeld, a professor from the Department of Neuroscience of the University of Arizona and co-author of the study. Frank Hirth from King’s College London, another author of the research, pointed out that it was previously believed that brains do not fossilize.
- Facebook failed to block 75% of ads containing death threats to election workers during the US midterm elections, researchers have found. The ads were released by the researchers “on the day of or day before the 2022 US midterm elections” to test Facebook, Youtube and Tiktok’s moderation capabilities. The content of all the ads was based on previously reported reals threats, and was submitted as ads in order to let the investigators “schedule them in the future and, importantly, to remove them before they go live, while still being reviewed by the platforms and undergoing their content moderation processes.” They included texts with “statements that people would be killed, hanged, or executed, and that children would be molested”, all with corrected grammar. Similarly, the “threats were chillingly clear in their language; none were coded or difficult to interpret… all violate Meta, TikTok and Google’s ad policies.” According to the report, Facebook approved nine of the ten English-language ads and six of the ten Spanish-language ones. YouTube and TikTok showed better results, with both platforms suspending the accounts from which the ads were released for violating their policies, according to the report.
- Denise George, the US Virgin Islands’ attorney general, on Wednesday said Epstein’s estate will pay $105 million in cash plus half the proceeds from the sale of Little St. James, a private island bought by Epstein in 1998 near Great St. James (bought in 2016), where Epstein lived and allegedly committed many crimes. Additionally Epstein’s estate agreed to sell half of the earnings from the sale of Little St. James and pay $450,000 for environmental works around Great St. James. “This settlement restores the faith of the people of the Virgin Islands that its laws will be enforced, without fear or favor, against those who break them,” George said in a statement. “We are sending a clear message that the Virgin Islands will not serve as a haven for human trafficking.”

Star systems that existed before the universe was even a billion years old look bigger and more complex than the theory suggested. To everyone who sees them, the new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) images of the cosmos are beautifully awe-inspiring. But to most professional astronomers and cosmologists, they are also extremely surprising—not at all what was predicted by theory. Why do the JWST’s images inspire panic among cosmologists? And what theory’s predictions are they contradicting? The papers don’t actually say. The truth that these papers don’t report is that the hypothesis that the JWST’s images are blatantly and repeatedly contradicting is the Big Bang Hypothesis that the universe began 14 billion years ago in an incredibly hot, dense state and has been expanding ever since. Since that hypothesis has been defended for decades as unquestionable truth by the vast majority of cosmological theorists, the new data is causing these theorists to panic. It is not too complicated to explain why these too small, too smooth, too old and too numerous galaxies are completely incompatible with the Big Bang hypothesis. Let’s begin with “too small”. If the universe is expanding, a strange optical illusion must exist. Galaxies (or any other objects) in expanding space do not continue to look smaller and smaller with increasing distance. Beyond a certain point, they start looking larger and larger. (This is because their light is supposed to have left them when they were closer to us.) Lakshmi came to the famous Manakula Vinayagar Temple in Puducherry when she was just ten years old. Since then, the 33-year-old female elephant has had an imposing presence in the temple which attracts thousands of tourists everyday from inside and outside the country. On Wednesday, Lakshmi went for her routine morning walk near Kamakshi Amman Temple with two of its mahout. Halfway through the walk, the elephant collapsed on the road after hitting a stationary car, which was damaged. Television footage showed the mahout crying profusely unable to control emotions even as a steady stream of mourners paid their last respects to Lakshmi, which ‘blessed’ them for about 24 years during temple hours in the mornings and evenings.
