- The White House has dismissed Republican efforts to investigate President Joe Biden and his son’s overseas business ties, rejecting allegations that the commander in chief is under the sway of “foreign dollars” as a baseless conspiracy theory. In a statement to the New York Post on Thursday, a spokesman for the White House counsel’s office, Ian Sams, said House Republicans are “wasting time and resources on political revenge” after several lawmakers pledged to open a probe into the Biden family, namely the president’s son Hunter. Earlier on Thursday, GOP Reps. James Comer and Jim Jordan announced that an investigation into the president would be a priority during the next round of Congress, saying their probe would center whether Biden has been “directly involved with Hunter Biden’s business deals” and if he is in any way “compromised.
- Twitter told its employees on Thursday that all office buildings will be temporarily closed and that badge access will be suspended, media reports say. According to an internal message seen by the BBC, workers were told the offices would reopen next Monday, although the company gave no reason for the closure. The message also asked workers to “continue to comply with company policy by refraining from discussing confidential company information on social media, with the press or elsewhere.” Some suspect the move may be attributable to fears held by Elon Musk and his team that disgruntled employees may attempt to sabotage the company from within, according to Platformer managing editor Zoe Schiffer.
- The current US government is pushing “radical civic and gender insanity” in schools, former president Donald Trump said during the speech announcing his 2024 campaign. He added that this will stop once Trump returns to the White House. “Joe Biden has also proven that he is committed to indoctrinating our children even using the Department of Justice against parents who object,” he said on Tuesday evening in Mar-a-Lago, Florida. According to US media outlets, this was a reference to the White House working with the National Association of School Boards last year to create a pretext for treating concerned parents as potential domestic terrorists.
- The US government pushed Israel into a one-time deal to provide Ukraine with mysterious “strategic materials” several weeks ago, Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed on Thursday. Tel Aviv reportedly wants the details of the arrangement kept under wraps to avoid irking Moscow. Citing three “senior European diplomatic officials,” Haaretz reported that Washington approached the Israeli government several weeks ago, pressing it to supply Ukraine with anti-aircraft batteries. While Israel refused, it agreed to fund the “strategic materials” instead.

- Evidence gathered by Poland, the US, and NATO suggests that it was a Ukrainian missile that killed two people on Polish territory this week, the head of Warsaw’s National Security Bureau (BBN), Jacek Siewiera, told the local RMF FM radio broadcaster on Thursday. Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that the missile was likely a Ukrainian weapon. Washington, meanwhile, admitted it had no evidence that would contradict Duda’s assessment, while Kiev rushed to blame the incident on Moscow.
- Scientists voted on Friday to add new prefixes to the SI system of measurement, with ronna- and quetta- becoming the largest units in the system. Following the additions, the Earth can now be said to weigh approximately six ronnagrams. The measurements were adopted at the 27th General Conference on Weights and Measures, which meets at Versailles Palace in France every four years and determines new additions to the International System of Units (SI). Just as a kilogram represents 1,000 grams, a ronnagram now represents one gram followed by 27 zeros and a quettagram one followed by 30 zeros. The prefixes can be applied to any of the base units in the SI system. For example, a ronnameter is equal to one meter to the power of 27, and a quettavolt is one volt of electric potential to the power of 30.
- The new units make it easier to describe extremely large objects. The new prefixes were proposed by Dr. Richard Brown of the UK’s National Physical Laboratory, and were driven by the needs of the tech industry, which is already using the previous highest prefixes in data storage (yottabytes and zettabytes).“If we think about mass, instead of distance, the Earth weighs approximately six ronnagrams,” Brown said. “Jupiter, that’s about two quettagrams.” The conference also voted on two new prefixes to describe the smallest things in the universe. ‘Ronto’ describes one unit to the power of negative 27, while ‘quecto’ describes one unit to the power of negative 30. This means that one quectogram is equal to 0.000000000 000000000000000000001 grams. Such tiny measurements are “useful for quantum science, particle physics – when you’re measuring really, really small things,” Brown explained.
