- The Boy Scouts of America will be facing at least 92,700 claims of sexual abuse as former scouts submit filings against the bankruptcy-bound organization, said one of the lead attorneys for the legal team representing the claimants. The far-reaching bankruptcy case now jeopardize the national BSA’s existence. “It’s the biggest sexual-abuse case by an order of magnitude, anywhere ever. It’s bigger than all of the Catholic Church cases combined, by a longshot” said Tim Kosnoff, a Seattle lawyer whose team represents thousands of BSA claimants nationwide.
- Twitter’s Jack Dorsey and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg must have felt a bit like Dr. Frankenstein as they were pulled between Democrats and Republicans during Tuesday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on censorship and election meddling in social media. After all, their platforms created the political “monster” that is 2020’s divided America – a country in which civilized debate has been replaced by mudslinging and respectable individuals are wary of ideas that have not been pre-vetted by fact-checkers.
- The FAA ungrounds the 737 MAX – FAA Administrator Steve Dickson today signed an order (PDF) that paves the way for the Boeing 737 MAX to return to commercial service. Administrator Dickson’s action followed a comprehensive and methodical safety review process that took 20 months to complete. During that time, FAA employees worked diligently to identify and address the safety issues that played a role in the tragic loss of 346 lives aboard Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302. Throughout our transparent process, we cooperated closely with our foreign counterparts on every aspect of the return to service. Additionally, Administrator Dickson personally took the recommended pilot training and piloted the Boeing 737 MAX, so he could experience the handling of the aircraft firsthand [???].
- [America Won’t Give Up Its Hackable Wireless Voting Machines — Bloomberg Jan 3,2020] After hackers made extensive efforts to infiltrate the American voting apparatus in 2016, some states moved to restrict internet access to their vote-counting systems. Colorado got rid of barcodes used to electronically read ballots. California tightened its rules for electronic voting machines that can go online. Ohio bought new voting machines that deliberately excluded wireless capabilities. Michigan went in a different direction, authorizing as much as $82 million for machines that rely on wireless modems to connect to the internet. State officials justified the move by saying it is the best way to satisfy an impatient public that craves instantaneous results, even if they’re unofficial. The problem is, connecting election machines to the public internet, especially wirelessly, leaves the whole system vulnerable, according to cybersecurity experts. So Michigan’s new secretary of state is considering using some of the state’s $10 million in federal election funds to rip out those modems before the March presidential primary.

Diwali Festival
Dozens of exuberant villagers scooped up handfuls of cow dung to mould and toss at each other like snowballs this week for the Gorehabba festival, a local conclusion to India’s most important festival, Diwali. Similar to Spain’s La Tomatina – an eccentric tomato-hurling celebration of the local fruit – residents of Gumatapura village instead fling something more earthy at each other: cow dung. Some Hindus believe cows and everything they produce is sacred and purifying. Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed for greater protection of the beasts, and many Indian states have long banned their slaughter for meat.

There are many natural occurrences that might puzzle a traveler. One of them is Al Naslaa Rock Formation, located in Tayma oasis, Saudi Arabia. For thousands of years, the fragrant resin known as oud that sometimes forms naturally inside wild aquilaria trees is highly prized. Referred to as “liquid gold”, the trees’ resin is distilled and used as one of the world’s most luxurious ingredients for perfume. The essential oil, with a musky aroma, is one of the most expensive of its kind in the world – it varies in price based on purity, but can attract about US$200 per ml – due to the difficulty of harvesting it and its rarity.
