- A scientific expedition has discovered a previously unknown coral reef with abundant marine life off Ecuador’s Galapagos Islands, the country’s environment ministry said on Monday. “A deepwater scientific expedition has found the first totally pristine coral reef, approximately two kilometers (1.2 miles) long, at 400 meters (deep), on the summit of a submarine mountain,” Environment Minister Jose Davalos said on Twitter. “Galapagos surprises us again!” Scientists had believed that the only Galapagos reef to survive El Nino weather in 1982 and 1983 was one called the Wellington reef, along the coast of Darwin Island, but the new discovery shows other coral has persisted, the ministry said in a statement.
- One of the most closely watched US media trials in decades kicks off in a Delaware court, with jury selection due to be completed and opening statements delivered as Fox Corp and Fox News face a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems. Anticipation has been building for this day since Dominion sued in 2021 over Fox’s airing of false claims that the company’s ballot-counting machines were used to rig the 2020 US presidential election in favor of Joe Biden over Donald Trump.
- The Group of Seven industrial powers drew together to criticize Russia’s threat to station nuclear weapons in Belarus, promising to intensify sanctions. In a communique issued at the end of a three-day meeting in Japan, foreign ministers said: “Russia’s irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and its threat to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus are unacceptable.”
- Books have been written about alleged criminal activity involving the Clintons, from Clinton Foundation fraud to the mysterious death of Vince Foster, Hillary’s email server and Bill’s flights aboard the Lolita Express. But it was Hillary’s 2016 rival who became the first former occupant of the White House to face criminal charges. Hillary Clinton has been unable to hide her delight over her 2016 rival’s indictment, claiming the criminal charges against Donald Trump stem from his blatant disregard for the law, both in business and in his political career. “I always thought about him, and if you follow him I think you can see it as well – he accuses people of doing things he himself is doing. It’s a form of psychological projection and I always thought that his record in business in particular but then as we saw him in politics and government – he was someone who cared nothing about rules, he cared nothing about the law,” Clinton said, speaking to Australian media in an interview which aired Tuesday.
- Gunfire echoed across the Sudanese capital Khartoum for a fourth day, accompanied by the sound of warplanes and explosions. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said it was nearly impossible to provide humanitarian services around the city and warned that the country’s health system was at risk of collapse. The United States spoke to rival Sudanese commanders who have been waging fierce battles, telling them to stop fighting after a US diplomatic convoy came under fire. Fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Response Forces that erupted on Saturday has killed at least 185 people and injured more than 1,800.
- Elon Musk said he will launch an artificial intelligence platform that he calls “TruthGPT” to challenge the offerings from Microsoft and Google. He criticized Microsoft-backed OpenAI, the firm behind ChatGPT, of “training the AI to lie” and accused Larry Page, co-founder of Google, of not taking AI safety seriously.
- The Biden administration has pushed the country to the brink of collapse with both its foreign and domestic policies, Trump claimed as he spoke about his ambitions for the 2024 presidential campaign. “The USA is a mess. Our economy is crashing, inflation is out of control,” the former president stated. The US dollar is “crashing” as well, he claimed, adding that the American currency “will soon no longer be the world’s standard.” This would amount to Washington’s “greatest defeat in 200 years” and was “unthinkable just a few years ago,” Trump said as he addressed the NRA convention in Indianapolis last Friday.
- Seymour Hersh published a article Thursday stating that United States Intelligence Officials know Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his inner circle have stolen over 400 million dollars of United States taxpayer aid. Zelensky’s inner circle used the money to purchase luxury cars and cheap Russian gas. According to Hersh, United States officials became enraged when generals close to Zelensky started buying luxury cars after the start of the war, amidst the arrival of massive amounts of US aid money. Hersh wrote, “The ten he got rid of were brazenly bragging about the money they had driving around Kiev in their new Mercedes.”
- In an eerie semblance to George Orwell’s ‘1984’, the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology Act, or RESTRICT Act, looms as a dark cloud over American liberties. Branded as a mere “TikTok ban,” this act possesses a sweeping reach that would empower the federal government to designate any nation a “foreign adversary,” ban online services and products even indirectly controlled by an entity within their jurisdiction, and severely punish Americans who engage in almost any transaction with them. Sponsored by Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), the RESTRICT Act not only targets the Chinese-linked TikTok platform but also has the potential to dismantle the very foundations of American freedom. One cannot help but draw comparisons to Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, where pervasive government surveillance and control are the norm. In a frightening twist, this proposed legislation could make such nightmarish fiction a stark reality.
- The Pentagon leaks have caused acute embarrassment in Washington and among the US national media, which missed the story for months. Steve Poikonen, national organizer for Action4Assange, and writer Dr Jim Kavanagh, editor of online magazine The Polemicist, discuss the improbability of the entire narrative. Washington is using the leak of classified Pentagon documents on Ukraine as an excuse to further invade citizens’ online privacy, says a defender of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Steve Poikonen said that the arrest and charging of 21-year-old Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira was a gift to those in Washington pushing for more authoritarian controls on citizens’ web surfing. “They have quite literally tailor made a present, built the box for it and then gift wrapped all of the reasons for Congress to pass the Restrict Act,” Poikonen said. “It makes sense if you’re trying to get that particular piece of legislation passed. It also makes sense if you’re trying to look for a pivot point in which to move the money laundering from Ukraine over to Taiwan. But outside of that… it’s ludicrous on its face.”
- The Department of Justice on Monday arrested two New Yorkers, charging them with helping the government of China establish a secret police station in Manhattan, and with trying to hide evidence of that from the FBI. The US government also charged 44 Chinese nationals with “repression schemes” targeting Americans online. According to federal prosecutors, the two men had a “long-standing relationship of trust” with the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS), which they helped “surreptitiously open and operate an illegal MPS police station on US soil.” The alleged outpost of the Fuzhou branch of the MPS operated from an office building in Manhattan’s Chinatown, until it was raided and closed by the FBI in October 2022. “The [People’s Republic of China], through its repressive security apparatus, established a secret physical presence in New York City to monitor and intimidate dissidents and those critical of its government,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen said in a statement, adding that these actions “go far beyond the bounds of acceptable nation-state conduct.”
- According the New York Times the South Korean tech giant Samsung was considering switching to Microsoft’s Bing as the default search engine on its devices. Bing is a minor player that has risen in prominence recently after the integration of artificial intelligence technology. Microsoft, a primary investor and partner of research lab OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, added a similar chatbot that is capable of having open-ended text conversations. There was “panic” at Google as the potential switch by the world’s leading smartphone maker would put at risk around $3 billion of its $162 billion annual revenue, the outlet said, citing internal messages.
- Despite the prevalence of CCTV and security guards, more than 6,500 rapes and sexual assaults – some against children under 13 – have been committed in hospitals in England and Wales since 2019, according to a report by the Women’s Rights Network (WRN) published on Monday. A least 2,088 rapes and 4,451 sexual assaults in hospitals were recorded by police forces in the UK between January 2019 and October 2022, the organization said, citing Freedom of Information requests to 43 police forces. One in seven of these attacks took place inside hospital wards, the report stated. Among the crimes reported were the rape of a female child under 13 and the gang rape of a female over 16 in two West Midlands hospitals. Three rapes of a female under 16 were reported in Cambridgeshire, while six girls under the age of 13 were raped in Lancashire, the report alleges. At least 14 attacks involved a male victim, one of whom was under the age of 13, the report stated.
- Northern lights enthusiasts in Alaska were treated to a rare and unexpected sight in the sky over the weekend when a light blue spiral resembling a galaxy appeared amid the aurora borealis for a few minutes. The unusual phenomenon was caused by excess fuel that had been released from a SpaceX rocket that launched from California about three hours before it appeared. The appearance of the vortex was caught in time-lapse on the Geophysical Institute’s all-sky camera and shared widely on social media. While such occurrences are not common, space physicist Don Hampton has seen them happen about three times.
