News Burst 18 September 2020 - Defund Police

Minneapolis Police Department

In the wake of George Floyd’s death while in the custody of the Minneapolis police, the city council made the decision to defund the city’s police department and embark on a “police-free future.”
“We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department,” tweeted Council Member Jeremiah Ellison pledging to “dramatically rethink” the city’s approach to emergency response. “Residents are asking, ‘Where are the police?'” Councilman Jamal Osman said. “That is the only public safety option they have at the moment. They rely on MPD. And they are saying they are nowhere to be seen.” Council President Lisa Bender claims the cops are being “defiant,” adding “This is not new.”

Rosselkhoznadzor

Russia will start producing its experimental vaccine against COVID-19 for animals already next month, the head of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) said. Experts from Rosselkhoznadzor’s Federal Centre for Animal Health are currently working on the vaccine. “We are already conducting tests. In October, we will launch production of experimental samples. We will see if there is demand,” Sergey Dankvert told reporters. The vaccine is designed for animals that are highly susceptible to the coronavirus, such as cats and minks. It will be recommended to fur farms, where the highly susceptible animals are bred on an industrial scale.

News Burst 18 September 2020 - France Verginity Certificate

France

“No to the law banning virginity certificates”. The surprising appeal comes from a group of French gynecologists and doctors who are against the government’s decision to pass a law to ban this sexist, humiliating practice, making doctors who are willing to issue certificates criminally responsible. Virginity certificates are issued after a hymen integrity check and are usually requested by young people, or rather by parents and future husbands. The signatory doctors underline that this is a minority phenomenon. “We are definitely against virginity tests” they specify. “It is a barbaric, retrograde and totally sexist practice. In an ideal world, such certificates should of course be rejected.”

Submarine On Saturn’s Moon Titan

A submarine could explore alien seas just a few decades from now. Researchers have been crafting a concept mission that would send a submarine to Saturn’s huge moon Titan, which sports lakes and seas of liquid hydrocarbons on its frigid surface. Such a mission, if approved and funded by NASA, could be ready to launch in the 2030s, potentially paving the way for even more ambitious submarine exploration down the road, the concept’s developers said. The giant moon is the only world beyond Earth known to host stable bodies of liquid on its surface — those seas and lakes of liquid methane and ethane, some of which are bigger than North America’s Great Lakes.

NASA has today confirmed, for the first time, that there is water on the sunlit surface of the moon. The revelation means it is possible water is easily accessible and not just in the deep, permanently shadowed craters of the south pole, as was previously thought. A separate piece of research found these so-called ‘cold traps’, which are always in shadow, may contain up to 15,000 square miles – 40,000 square km – of water.
