  • The New York Post relegated former President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign announcement to its back pages, mockingly describing him as an “avid golfer” and a “Florida retiree.” The Post has harshly criticized Trump since last week’s midterm elections, and appears to consider Florida Governor Ron DeSantis the future of the GOP. “Avid golfer Donald J. Trump kicked things off at Mar-a-Lago, his resort and classified-documents library,” the story read.

  • Kiev has been accused of “openly lying” about a missile that hit Poland killing two civilians, earlier this week, the Financial Times reported on Thursday citing an unnamed diplomat from a NATO country. Ukraine rushed to pin the blame on Moscow, while the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that footage from the site showed “elements of a missile from an S-300 air defense system used by the Air Force of Ukraine.” “This is getting ridiculous,” the official told the outlet on Wednesday. “The Ukrainians are destroying our confidence in them. Nobody is blaming Ukraine and they are openly lying. This is more destructive than the missile,” he said.

  • The Hague District Court has found three people guilty in the high-profile case of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, which was downed amid hostilities in the east of Ukraine in 2014. Russia criticized the Dutch-led investigation and prosecution as not fully objective. One of the men accused was acquitted due to lack of evidence, but three were sentenced to life in prison, in partly due to their “detestable” attitude towards the trial, Judge Hendrik Steenhuis said. All four were tried in absentia.

  • “The Asia-Pacific … should not become an arena for a big power contest,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said, adding that, “No attempt to wage a new cold war will ever be allowed by the power or by our times.” “The 21st century is the Asia-Pacific century … We, members of this region, have come a long way in pursuing economic development, and we will surely write an even more brilliant chapter in the years ahead,” Xi stressed.

  • The Chinese government has denounced Washington for “spreading disinformation” after the head of the FBI said that TikTok – a Chinese-owned social media platform – poses a serious national security threat. Asked about the remarks from FBI Director Christopher Wray earlier this week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning dismissed the charge, telling reporters that Washington is merely seeking to discredit a large Chinese firm competing with Western social media giants. “Spreading disinformation and then using it to hobble Chinese companies has become a go-to tool used by the US government. China is firmly against this,” Mao said, urging US officials to “act more responsibly, and take more credible steps to respect and observe the international rules that emphasize fairness, openness and non-discrimination.”

  • Twitter CEO Elon Musk refused a request by US comic Jimmy Fallon to stop the spread of a hashtag suggesting that he died. Since purchasing Twitter and firing many of the platform’s content moderation staff, Musk has waded into several disputes with high-profile celebrity users. The hashtag “#RIPJimmyFallon” began circulating on Twitter on Tuesday, with pranksters sometimes posting the message alongside images of unrelated celebrities.

  • Virgin Atlantic reversed its gender-neutral uniform policy for cabin crew flying the England team to the World Cup in Qatar. Although the squad still flew aboard the airline’s ‘Gay Pride’ jet, crossdressing will only be allowed on flights to “more accepting” countries, the airline said. Gareth Southgate’s squad touched down in Doha on Tuesday, on a specially chartered Virgin Atlantic flight from Birmingham. For the one-off flight, the airline told several British media outlets that it suspended its gender identity policy and instructed crew members to dress in the appropriate uniform for their gender.

  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has deleted a tweet which endorsed a claim that Iranian authorities had issued death sentences to thousands of protesters.

  • The removal comes after a number of journalists and human rights campaigners pointed out that the information in the post was untrue, despite being shared by a slew of celebrities, political commentators and government officials. The post, which went viral on social media over the past couple of days, shows a woman holding an Iranian flag with the text: “Iran sentences 15,000 protesters to death – as a ‘hard lesson’ for all rebels.” In the tweet, Trudeau stated that Canada denounces the “Iranian regimes’s barbaric decision” to impose the death penalty on the protesters. A Canadian government spokesperson has explained Trudeau’s decision to delete the message, stating: “the post was informed by initial reporting that was incomplete and lacked necessary context.”

  • Twitter owner Elon Musk has announced that he plans to step back from the social media company over time and is looking for a new CEO to run the platform, Reuters reported on Wednesday. “There’s an initial burst of activity needed post-acquisition to reorganize the company,” Musk said in his testimony. “But then I expect to reduce my time at Twitter.

  • The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has already discovered in its first six months of operation far more galaxies than was previously thought possible, NASA scientists told a press conference on Thursday. The spectroscopes on the Webb telescope systems have already revealed the “fingerprints” of the different atomic structures, providing a much more precise picture of galaxies in the early universe moving at faster at higher redshift velocities than had ever before been seen or measured, Space Telescope Science Institute instrument scientist Alaina Henry said.
