News Burst 18 June 2022 – Featured News

  • A Tesla shareholder sued the electric car maker, chief executive Elon Musk and its board, accusing them of neglecting to tackle complaints about workplace discrimination and harassment, and engendering a “toxic workplace culture”. In other news, Musk was sued for $258 billion by a Dogecoin investor who accused him of running a pyramid scheme to support the cryptocurrency. And in a call with Twitter staff, Musk mused on space aliens and the company’s future.

  • Airlines expect the end of COVID testing requirements in North America to accelerate a rebound in transatlantic traffic – but soaring fares due to surging fuel costs and staffing shortages may slam the brakes on rising demand in the world’s largest international travel market.

  • More than 8,800 archaeological excavation projects have been carried out for the past decade. The project to trace the origins of Chinese civilisation, initiated in 2002, has proven that China’s history includes million years of human evolution, 10,000 years of culture, and more than 5,000 years of civilisation. President Xi Jinping said on May 27 that archaeological exploration and literature research should be combined with tools and methods of natural sciences to further the project. The application of science and technology has indeed been of crucial support to the achievements of archaeological work in China to date.

  • Thailand announced it would abandon its much-criticized pre-registration process for foreign visitors and no longer require face masks to be worn in public, responding to a slower COVID spread.

  • British interior minister Priti Patel approved the extradition of WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange to the United States to face criminal charges. In April, the British judiciary formally green-lighted the extradition of WikiLeaks founder to the United States, where he faces up to 175 years in jail on espionage charges. The UK government approved Julian Assange’s extradition to the US, authorities announced on Friday. Home Secretary Priti Patel signed the extradition order on Friday, thus upholding a UK court’s April ruling. WikiLeaks has issued a lengthy statement criticising the move as they vowed to appeal the decision. “This is a dark day for Press freedom and for British democracy.” the organisation stated. WikiLeaks stressed that it was in Patel’s power “to do the right thing. Instead she will forever be remembered as an accomplice to the United States in its agenda to turn investigative journalism into a criminal enterprise”.

  • US fast-food chain McDonald’s will pay €1.25 billion ($1.3 billion) in France to avoid prosecution over tax evasion between 2009 and 2020, AFP reports, citing an agreement approved on Thursday by a Paris court. It is reportedly the second-biggest tax settlement in French history, made up of a 508-million-euro fine and a €737 million in back taxes already agreed in May. It comes years after the US company was accused of reporting artificially low profits to reduce its tax bill.

  • Scientists don’t really agree on a definition for life. We may recognize life instinctively most of the time, but any time we try to nail it down with set criteria, some stubborn counterexample spoils the effort. Still, can we really search for life on other worlds, or understand the earliest stages of life on this planet, if we don’t know what to look for? Any definition along these lines is riddled with exceptions. For instance, is a virus alive? Well, viruses do evolve, but they don’t replicate on their own. They use the host’s cellular machinery to make more copies of themselves. The question of what life is also matters, because if we’re going to be looking for life on other planets, don’t we need to at least have some idea of what we’re looking for?

  • The total cost of the Apollo programme in today’s money was $280bn, according to a recent estimate by The Planetary Society. The last decade has seen an explosion in the number of private space companies, led by famous names like Elon Musk’s SpaceX. By developing reusable rockets, they’ve driven down the cost of getting to space considerably. NASA already uses SpaceX technology to deliver astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station and they’ve inked deals to collaborate on sending landers to the Moon, too.

  • If you condensed the entire 4.5 billion years of Earth’s existence into a 24-hour period, more than 3 million years would pass each minute. The dinosaurs would go extinct at 11.39 pm and 48 seconds. Human history would begin two-tenths of a second before midnight.

  • The FBI and US Department of Commerce have launched a probe into claims that American-made computer chips have been found in Russian military hardware in Ukraine, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday. Government agents have been visiting companies and asking about how their components ended up in Russian radars, drones, tanks, ground-control and other weapon systems, “people familiar with the matter” told the paper. “Our goal is to actually try to track that back, all the way back to the US supplier” and figure out “how did it find its way into that weapons system,” one Commerce Department official said.

You can't reach anything if you don't dream about it. Everything in existence, was before conceived like a dream, everything achieved, was before thought. One thing is sure, if you can't imagine... you can't achieve.
