- Beijing remained silent about the absence of Defence Minister Li Shangfu on Saturday as speculation about his whereabouts intensified. Li, the public face of China’s military, was conspicuously missing from a major military meeting on Friday, according to footage aired on the state broadcaster CCTV, extending an unexplained public absence now in its third week. Li’s name was also not included in a report by state news agency Xinhua on the meeting. His continued disappearance from public view has raised questions about the whereabouts of the general and his political future. The last public appearance of Li, 65, was at the China-Africa Peace and Security Forum in Beijing on August 29, when he delivered a keynote speech.
- An armed man was arrested by police at an event attended by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., after the Democratic presidential candidate’s unsuccessful requests for Secret Service protection since declaring candidacy in April. Photos provided to The Epoch Times show the man, who was wearing a shirt with “EMS” on the back, being held in handcuffs by police officers outside the event venue in Los Angeles on Friday afternoon. Multiple police vehicles were at the scene. Mr. Kennedy Jr. was at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, located at 4401 West 8th Street, to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The event was held at 4–8 p.m. PT. The Los Angeles Police Department told The Epoch Times it received a call at around 4:30 p.m. reporting that a male was in front of the event venue with “a badge on their lapel, a gun, and a shoulder holster, and claimed to be a U.S. Marshal.”
- After years of a surge in migrant attempts to make it from the Mideast-North Africa region which goes back to at least 2015, which was a record year for such crossings, this week witnessed a truly unprecedented first. Starting Wednesday and continuing through the end of the week, a giant flotilla of ramshackle boats packed with mostly African migrants surrounded and inundated the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, off Sicily. Scenes on Thursday into Friday showed chaos erupting given the tiny island only has a population of about 6,500 people, and the number of migrants arriving by boat within only a 24 hour period has been tallied at around 7,000. The flotilla is believed to have set out from Tunisia, and this particular island is easier to reach given it sits geographically closer to the African coast than it does the Italian mainland. Over 120 small boats hit the island’s shores within the span of a single day, and the its infrastructure has quickly been overwhelmed.

- Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations Vassily Nebenzia told Sputnik that no concrete results are to be expected from the special meeting of the UN Security Council on Ukraine with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine is scheduled for September 20. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in the meeting, which is expected to be attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as well, Nebenzia detailed. “Of course, Russia will participate in the upcoming high-level meeting of the Security Council on Ukraine, as in all previous meetings of the Council on this issue. - The former president believes that the Russian leader’s statements prove that he is “right” about the conflict in Ukraine. - The ongoing conflict in Ukraine may be about to move to a new phase amid the severe losses sustained by the Kiev regime forces, warns former senior Pentagon adviser Col. Douglas Macgregor. With thousands of Ukrainian losses during the ongoing “counteroffensive”, Kiev appears to be “desperate for manpower” and is trying to rectify this problem by “forcing people into uniform inside the country that are not really capable of fighting” and attempting to repatriate Ukrainians of military age from overseas, Macgregor said during an interview with Norwegian political scientist Glenn Diesen. Macgregor did point out, however, that Kiev may instead resort to attacking Russia with long-range weapons acquired from Western sponsors, such as Storm Shadow and Taurus missiles, with the colonel suggesting that the recent Ukrainian attack on Sevastopol was an example of such a strike. He noted that this course of actions does not bode well for Ukraine as it essentially helps convince Moscow that the Ukrainian conflict can only be resolved through military means.
- Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro will be admitted to a Sao Paulo hospital on Monday to undergo two surgical procedures related to a 2018 stabbing, he told Reuters late on Sunday. A third operation has been rescheduled by doctors. Since 2018 Bolsonaro has had at least six operations, some directly linked to when he was stabbed in the abdomen while campaigning for the presidency in September 2018. Jair Bolsonaro has, meanwhile, been facing multiple criminal probes that could result in prison sentences. On Saturday, Brazil’s Supreme Court authorized a cooperation deal between one of his former aides and the country’s Federal Police.

In a statement on Thursday, POTUS said that she has been appointed to the role due to her decades of experience in business and what he described as Pritzker’s “deep familial ties to Ukraine.”
- Cocaine and oil have always vied for the position of Colombia’s top export, President Gustavo Petro admitted on Friday. Petro’s opponents have accused him of creating a “narco state,” while the president insists that market forces are responsible for a recent surge in cocaine production. “Cocaine has been Colombia’s first export product several times, and if not, the second,” Petro wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Everything depends on the international price of both products, if the price of oil falls, cocaine is the largest export, if the international price of oil rises, it is oil [first] and cocaine the second.”
- Billionaire financier George Soros handed at least $300,000 to a group of TikTok creators last year, who used the funding to push a myriad of liberal narratives, the New York Post reported on Saturday. The group often worked under direct instruction from the White House. Soros’ Open Society Foundations donated $5.5 million to the nonprofit Accelerate Action Inc. in 2020 and 2021, which in turn gave at least $300,000 in 2022 to Gen Z for Change, the newspaper reported, citing tax filings. Gen Z for Change describes itself as a network of more than 500 social media “activists, organizers, and creators.” Across various social media platforms, the group publishes content promoting abortion, gun control, liberal immigration policy, and “climate justice,” according to its website.
- Russia’s Luna-25 automatic interplanetary station collided with the Moon last month due to the failure of speed-measuring devices on the probe, Yury Borisov, the head of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, has said. The accelerometers that measure the changes in the speed of the vehicle “didn’t switch on,” he added. The agency head said experts are now looking for reasons why those devices didn’t perform as intended. There are 16 possible scenarios for that to happen, and eleven of them have already been examined, he said. Borisov also revealed that the first person who offered him words of support after the crash was NASA head Bill Nelson.
- Scientists have aligned two probes to undertake the first simultaneous measurement of the properties of the Sun’s atmosphere, or corona. The result represents a step forward in solving the 65-year-old mystery of why, at around one million degrees, the corona is around 150 times hotter than the Sun’s surface, at 6,000 degrees. The Sun’s atmosphere is made up of an electrically charged gas called plasma. In theory, it should be cooler than the surface because the Sun’s energy comes from reactions in the core, and under normal circumstances matter cools as it moves further away from the heat source. But for the Earth’s star, other mechanisms seem to be at work. The research was conducted by the team responsible for the Solar Orbiter’s Metis instrument, built for the Italian Space Agency by Thales Alenia Space and OHB Italia, which takes pictures of the solar corona.
