  • Ex-French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been placed under formal investigation for “collaboration with wrongdoers” as part of a case over alleged Libyan sponsorship of his 2007 campaign, BFMTV reported Friday, citing the national financial prosecutor’s office. The French financial prosecutor’s office confirmed on Friday that new legal charges have been issued against former President Sarkozy. Sarkozy, who claims he’s victim of a “plot” in the case, is the second former French president to stand trial after Jacques Chirac.

  • Russia’s decision to quit the three-sided consultations with the Netherlands and Australia on flight MH17. Almost as soon as the terrible news came out on 17th July 2014 that a passenger airliner had come down over eastern Ukraine with the loss of all 298 people on board, the fingers of blame in the West were pointing at Russia, and the Kremlin was declared guilty until proven innocent.

  • Thousands of Thai people have protested into the night in Bangkok despite a ban on demonstrations designed to end months of protests. Thai police say two men will be charged with attempted violence against the queen, which carries a possible death sentence, after an incident in which her motorcade was heckled in Bangkok. As Queen Suthida’s convoy passed a group of protesters on Wednesday, video footage shows they gave the three-finger salutes of opposition to the establishment and shouted “our taxes”, a reference to complaints about palace spending. Police pushed protesters away from the queen’s car.

  • Over 200 migrants reached the Canary Islands. The migrants landed in six different boats, a day after another six boats with 173 migrants. Security on Morocco’s Mediterranean coast is pushing traffickers and migrants south to risk the perilous crossing to the Canaries.

  • The Cambodia National Police said yesterday that the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation will set up an office at its headquarters in Phnom Penh after a joint task force was established, a move that will enhance the rule of law in Kingdom. The move came amid frosty ties between the Kingdom and the US over some issues in recent years. The latest tension was the demolition of a facility funded by the US at Ream Naval Base. National Police spokesman Lieutenant General Chhay Kim Khoeun said yesterday that the FBI will set up its office inside the National Police headquarters after the two sides established a joint task force to fight transnational crimes between the two nations. “We have cooperation with the FBI and we already signed a Memorandum of Understanding to fight against transnational crimes, especially locating fugitives,” he said. “We agreed together to set up an FBI office here for coordinating work.”

  • Captive elephants of Nepal Chitwan National Park have once again started dying from tuberculosis. The park has confirmed TB as the reason behind the death of two elephants while the cause of the third death has yet to be ascertained. Chitwan National Park has nearly 60 domesticated elephants which support the park officials in day-to-day conservation activities. Tuberculosis in elephants is caused primarily by Mycobacterium tuberculosis—the same bacterium that is responsible for pulmonary diseases in humans. Domesticated elephants pick up the bacterium from humans who get close while taking care of these tuskers, among other activities.

Thailand has blocked access to online petition site, after it hosted a petition calling for King Maha Vajiralongkorn to be declared persona non grata in Germany. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society said the petition’s contents violated Thailand’s Computer Crime Act. It comes as Thailand is seeing some of its biggest pro-democracy protests in years. News Burst 17 October 2020 - Korea-Verband

A statue in Berlin that was just erected by a German association for Korean history, the Korea-Verband, at the end of September, would be allowed to remain for the time being, the responsible local district office recently announced. The statute addressed a “politically-historically charged and complex conflict between two states” which was not suitable for being dealt with in Germany, the district office said in a statement. According to the Korea-Verband, the statue was built to commemorate the more than 200,000 girls and women from 14 countries and regions, so-called “comfort women,” who were sexually enslaved by the Japanese military during World War II. According to the district, the controversial statue was previously evaluated as a general statement against sexualized violence against women in armed conflicts. However, in its current design, the statue focused exclusively on the behavior of the Japanese army during World War II.
