  • Problems arising from the state’s demand that every worker have a ‘green pass’ demonstrating they are vaxxed, or face fines, are threatening to disrupt ports, businesses, and may precipitate wider upheaval. From today, all employees in Italy are legally required to have the country’s ‘green pass’, showing they have had at least one dose of a vaccine, or have recovered from the disease within the last six months, to go to work. Alternatively, they can also do their jobs if they pay (out of their own pockets) for a test every two days, provided it comes back negative, obviously. Currently, around 15% of private and 8% of public sector employees are reported to not have the green pass.

  • A Conservative MP has died after being stabbed “several times,” as he held a meeting at a Methodist church in his constituency of Southend West. Police have been deployed to the area in considerable numbers. On Friday, a man ran into the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, UK, where Conservative MP Sir David Amess was holding his constituency surgery. MPs tend to hold their constituency meetings on Fridays, as work often brings them to their Westminster office from Monday through to Thursday.

  • Speaking to Bulgarian broadcaster bTV on Friday, Frans Timmermans, the European Commission’s deputy head, said, “Russia is fulfilling its gas supply contracts.” He added that “we have no reason to believe it is putting pressure on the market or manipulating it.” However, Timmermans went on to say that “the demand for gas at the global level is huge, including there.” Some parts of Western Europe have seen prices skyrocket by as much as 250% in recent weeks, with reserves running low and rising bills hitting businesses and consumers.

  • Moscow has joined Beijing in hitting out at a new military pact between the US, UK and Australia, saying that the move puts the West on a collision course with China and could lead to a sharp escalation in international tensions. Speaking to RIA Novosti on Friday, Nikolay Nozdrev, the director of the Third Asia Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that the new pact between the three nations, known as AUKUS, could spur countries around the world to expand their military stockpiles and exacerbate regional disputes. “It is already public knowledge that the purchase of American ‘Tomahawk’ sea-based cruise missiles by the Australians, agreements on the deployment of US Air Force jets, expansion of other forms of bilateral military cooperation, and the possibility of using Australian bases by British nuclear submarines are being discussed,” Nozdrev said.

  • An effigy of Christopher Columbus in London was doused with red paint. Campaigners seem unable to distinguish between inanimate objects and real people as they punish lumps of metal in moral purification rituals. ~ Joanna Williams

  • The very contrasting treatment of whistleblowers willing to testify against Facebook with that of the imprisoned WikiLeaks founder shows us that the Establishment’s support of those ‘spilling the beans’ is highly selective. All whistleblowers are equal, but some are more equal than others. Or, we could more specifically say, whistleblowers whose revelations aid ruling-class agendas are put in front of Congress and handed the mic, while those whose revelations expose ruling-class agendas are persecuted and end up in maximum-security jails. Hypocrisy at its finest: Facebook whistleblowers are feted, while Julian Assange is jailed. ~ Neil Clark

  • Prisoners languishing in Russian jails were physically and sexually abused by top officers in scenes reminiscent of a “concentration camp,” Vladimir Osechkin, the activist who published leaked clips of the torture, has said. According to him, ranking members of the country’s prison service “beat, tortured and raped prisoners making use of other convicts to do it.” The group’s leaked documents reportedly also show that doctors prescribed drugs to prisoners to effectively render them mentally incapable before they were transferred to asylums. Osechkin went on to describe the revelations as “a crime against humanity” and called for an “international investigation” into the incident.

  • As the mandatory use of vaccine passports becomes reality for more and more people, in Britain criminals have latched on to their value and are providing fake certification. UK vaccine passports on sale for £220. In America, states such as California and New York are increasingly demanding that people show proof of their status to gain entry to indoor venues. Italy has made carrying vaccine certification a requirement for workers in all public and private companies. The UK is split; Scotland and Wales are using passports, but England has opted to keep them in reserve for the time being, although plans have been revealed on their potential roll-out in certain scenarios.

  • Cambodia and China began enhancing security cooperation in 2019, with the US State Department expressing “serious concerns” about the People’s Republic’s alleged military presence in the Southeast Asian nation, particularly amid the construction of new facilities at the Ream Naval Base. A Washington-based think tank has published and analysed satellite images of Cambodia’s Ream Naval Base, and concluded that major new construction is taking place at the facility. Studying snaps taken by US private Earth imaging firm Maxar, the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative reported that within less than two weeks in the month August, two new buildings were erected along the coast in the base’s northern area – next to two others built earlier this year. Work was also started on a new road from the base’s southeast gate to the new facilities.

  • More than 700,000 people have left Kathmandu Valley for their hometowns and villages to celebrate Dashain in the six days since October 7 or Ghatasthapana, the first day of the festival, according to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division. Around 9,000 public vehicles have been leaving the Valley daily, carrying festival passengers, data show. “Compared to last year, the number of people leaving the Valley for the festival is considerably high this year,” Superintendent of Police Sanjib Sharma Das, the division spokesperson, told the Post.

  • The Dashain festival began with Ghatasthapana on Thursday with Hindus across the country sowing barley seeds for jamara at their homes and temples. Hindu deity Ganesh is also worshiped on the day and kalasha (a vessel of holy water) and diyo (oil lamps) are placed at an altar dedicated for the ritual, before offering prayers.

  • Automotive industry representatives are speaking out against the president’s plan to legalize ‘chocolate cars.’ Legalizing illegally-imported used cars ‘a gift to the mafia.’ At least 35 used cars enter illegally every day at one border crossing, said a customs agent.
President López Obrador’s plan to regularize illegally imported cars will only reward the criminal groups that bring them into the country, according to the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA).

  • The Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) says that it has made the process of obtaining a work-based residence permit for foreigners faster and more efficient in 2021 compared to the previous year. In a press release, the agency stated that while the average processing time for a residence permit based on employment was 143 days in 2020, it has been reduced to 77 days this year.

  • While they are thought to be everywhere, axions are predicted to be virtually ghost-like, having only tiny interactions with anything else in the universe. “As dark matter, they shouldn’t affect your everyday life,” said MIT physicist Lindley Winslow in 2019 about the first run of a new experiment to detect axions—hypothetical particles that are predicted to be among the lightest particles in the universe. “But they’re thought to affect things on a cosmological level,” Winslow noted, “like the expansion of the universe and the formation of galaxies we see in the night sky.” Physicists from MIT and elsewhere have suggested that If they exist, axions would be virtually invisible, yet inescapable; they could make up nearly 85 percent of the mass of the universe, in the form of dark matter.

Smoke From Smouldering Peat Bogs

Smoke from smouldering peat bogs around Yekaterinburg reached the largest city in the Urals on 11 October. To have peat fires and wildfires active this late into the autumn makes season 2021 one of the longest in the recorded history. The first wildfires of this year reported near the Pole of Cold in Oymyakon, Yakutia, in late April.
