  • Lufthansa has started the announced trial run with corona rapid tests for all passengers on the Munich-Hamburg airline. All passengers were to be tested before the first aircraft of the day took off from Munich Airport to Hamburg. Alternatively, passengers could present a negative PCR test that was no more than 48 hours old or be rebooked on another flight free of charge. The rapid antigen tests do not detect the Covid-19 pathogen as such, but proteins associated with it. The mode of operation is similar to a pregnancy test, the results should be available after 30 to 60 minutes.

  • An eleven-year-old Muslim student threatened a teacher in Berlin with violence and decapitation. He is said to have thus reacted on Tuesday to announced sanctions in case his parents did not show up for the usual talks at school. “If this happens because my parents did not show up, then I will do the same to you as the boy did to the teacher in Paris.

  • A massive oil well fire that has raged for more than five months in northeast India has finally been extinguished, officials said Sunday (Nov 15). Oil India engineers had battled the blaze in Assam state since an explosion in June, weeks after the well blew out and began discharging huge quantities of natural gas. Experts from Singapore, the United States and Canada joined efforts to contain the inferno, and Oil India spokesman Tridiv Hazarika said Sunday the fire had now been “doused completely”.

  • Hundreds of millions of Indians in north India woke up on Sunday to toxic air following Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, after many revelers defied bans on using firecrackers to celebrate. The capital New Delhi was blanketed with a thick haze, with the average pollution level over 9 times what is considered safe by the World Health Organization. Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had banned the use and sale of firecrackers ahead of Diwali, but the policy has been difficult to implement. Revelers in the capital let off huge amounts of fireworks well into Sunday morning, prompting angry residents and environmentalists to complain on social media of breathing difficulties and stinging eyes.

  • Sakie Yokota made an impassioned plea for Japanese government officials to bring her daughter home before the 43rd anniversary of her abduction by North Korean agents was marked. Yokota’s daughter, Megumi, was only 13 and a junior high school student when she was abducted on Nov. 15, 1977, in Niigata, where her family lived at the time. Megumi became a symbol of Japanese who were abducted by North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s. Yokota criticized the fact that no progress has been made on the abduction issue in recent years, calling it “abnormal.”

  • The village of Achi was recognized as the best location in Japan for observing stars based on darkness levels. “Our village is the darkest (at night) in Japan,” the resident Hitoshi Matsushita said. “Our starlit night sky is the most beautiful in the country.”

  • Last week, Peru plunged into a political crisis after the country’s Congress ousted President Martin Vizcarra in an impeachment vote. The politician was accused of bribery, an allegation he categorically denies. Peru’s interim President Manuel Merino has stepped down less than a week after he assumed the post. His resignation comes a day after large-scale protests were held in the capital Lima and other cities, with demonstrators demanding he step down. Saturday’s rally began peacefully, but by nightfall it became violent. Two people died during the clashes, while more than 60 were hospitalised. Merino’s cabinet stepped down in response to the casualties, and the president himself came under pressure to resign.

News Burst 16 November 2020 - Super Monster Wolf

“Super Monster Wolf”

A robot wolf designed to protect farms has proved to be such a success in trials that it is going into mass production next month. The “Super Monster Wolf” is a 65cm-long, 50cm-tall robot animal covered with realistic-looking fur, featuring huge white fangs and flashing red eyes. It’s been designed to keep wild boar away from rice and chestnut crops, and was deployed on a trial basis near Kisarazu City in Japan’s eastern Chiba prefecture. When it detects an approaching animal, its eyes light up and it starts to howl, Asahi TV says. Its manufacturers say the robot wolf uses solar-rechargeable batteries and has a range of howl noises so that animal threats don’t get used to it.
