  • As a state, Ukraine is vitally – or fatally – dependent on the West: As the Ukrainian anti-corruption activist Martina Bohuslavets notes in the staunchly patriotic Ukrainska Pravda, Kiev’s “international partners finance not only the reconstruction of critical infrastructure, but also all…pensions, public employee salaries, and, in general the country’s ability to keep going.” This is no exaggeration. Consider some figures from The Economist: The Ukrainian state budget for this year amounts to $87 billion; expected tax revenues – $46 billion. “The rest,” the British champion of uncompromising struggle against Russia concludes, “must be filled by foreign aid or borrowing.” ~ Tarik Cyril Amar

  • If it seems like mosquitoes bite you more than other people, they very well might. Studies show that around 20% of people are particularly irresistible to these pests. Mosquitoes may bite you more for various reasons, including your blood type, your clothes, your breathing, or even the bacteria living on your skin. Mosquitoes can sense carbon dioxide from a significant distance. The more you exhale, the more attractive you become. Mosquitoes can see humans from a distance of 5 to 15 meters (about 16 to 49 feet), which makes finding you pretty easy, too. Female mosquitoes are also attracted to heat and may choose to fly toward people even when there are other sources of heat available. Mosquitoes can sniff out human sweat, and they’re attracted to lactic acid, ammonia, and other compounds emitted in it. Your skin is naturally teeming with microscopic life. Mosquitoes may be especially drawn to ankles and feet because these areas are especially ripe for bacterial growth. Drink beer, eating sweet, salty, spicy, or potassium-rich foods is believed to attract more mosquitoes.

  • Russia has ‘nothing to say’ to the participants of the ongoing Swiss-hosted Ukraine ‘peace conference’, ‘ the talks cannot yield a peaceful solution to the conflict without Russia’, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Saturday. The Kiev-sponsored event is taking place at the Burgenstock Resort in Switzerland, and is reported to involve over 160 delegations, including those from the G7, G20, and BRICS countries. Despite being a party to the conflict, Russia has not been invited to the event, prompting Peskov to state that Moscow has no message for the participants.

  • Since ancient times, women have been known to have long hair which was not only seen as a symbol of beauty and health, as well as a sign of fertility, and it was also seen as a connection to the divine. People with long hair have been thought to possess greater insight, intuition, and spiritual awareness. In some cultures, it is believed that those with long hair can communicate with the spirit world and even see into the future. For example it is widely known that Vrill Society which widely influenced Hitler, was a secret society mostly made up of clairvoyant women. They claimed to have kept their hair long in order to act as an antenna to telepathically channel communication with extraterrestrial civilizations. The real reason why hair is so powerful is because of the key mineral found in hair called Silica, which is one of the main compositions of Quartz crystal. It acts as an antenna that’s able to transmit and recieve frequencies. It is believed that the more hair one has, the more energy they can draw from the environment and use for psychic purposes, healing or divination. Thank you for your patience, Many blessings ~ Nico

  • Israeli troops have used a medieval-style catapult to toss fireballs across the border into Lebanon, as fighting ramps up between Israel and the Iran-backed Islamist group Hezbollah. The trebuchet, a rotating arm with a sling attached to launch a projectile, has rarely been used since the 16th century. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the catapult was “a local initiative” and had not “come into widespread use,” Israeli public broadcaster reported Thursday. Kan said the trebuchet was probably used to burn shrubbery, making it easier for Israeli forces to identify militants attempting to reach the border. A video of the catapult in action was posted on social media on Wednesday but it was not possible to verify when the footage was shot but it was geolocated to the Israeli-Lebanese border.

  • In a significant move, the Swedish government has rejected the proposed 700 MW Hansa PowerBridge subsea power connection between Sweden and Germany. Energy Minister Ebba Busch cited inefficiencies in the German electricity market as the primary reason for the decision, emphasizing that connecting southern Sweden—already facing an electricity production deficit—with Germany could lead to higher prices and increased market instability.~ Julianne Geiger

  • The Marine Board of Investigation said several factors, including the need to contract two salvage missions to secure vital information, have led to necessary delays and extended the original 12-month timeline for the investigation. Last year, on June 18, 2023, the Titan submersible imploded during a dive to the Titanic wreckage, killing all five people on board, including OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush. In this WIRED story, Mark Harris sheds light on the development of the company’s submersible technology and the events leading up to the tragedy, sharing information from internal OceanGate emails, documents, and photographs. It’s clear, from the tens of thousands of pieces of evidence, that in his quest to conquer the deep sea, Rush cut corners financially and viewed tests and safety practices as hurdles that stifled innovation.

  • An international research team has discovered the oldest known marine plant using a novel genetic clock. This 1400-year-old seagrass clone from the Baltic Sea dates back to the Migration Period. The study with the results is published today in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. These so-called “clonal species” produce genetically similar offspring by branching or budding and often reach the size of a football field or more. However, these offspring are not genetically identical. In Northern Europe in particular, the team found clones with ages of several hundred years, comparable to the age of large oak trees. The oldest clone identified was 1402 years old and came from the Baltic Sea. This clone reached this advanced age despite a harsh and variable environment.

  • Researchers studied the diets of more than 118,000 Brits aged 40 to 69 and found that while a plant-based diet promotes overall heart health, this only applies to fresh plant-based foods such as fruit and vegetables , as well as cereals and legumes. Ultra-processed foods (UPF) which include packaged products, drinks, cereals and ready-to-eat products which contain colourants, emulsifiers, flavors and others additives and are notoriously high in sugar, saturated fat and salt, while often lacking vitamins. However, when the source of plant-based food comes from UPFs, there is a 12% spike in heart disease-related deaths.

  • Pope Francis, who on Friday became the first ever head of the Catholic Church to address a G7 summit, has warned of the challenges the rapid development of artificial intelligence poses for mankind. AI is an “exciting and fearsome tool” that needs strict human oversight, Pope Francis said. The algorithms “can only examine realities formalized in numerical terms,” while humans who have wisdom and can listen to Sacred Scripture “not only choose, but in their hearts are capable of deciding,” he said. It is paramount “that decision-making, even when we are confronted with its sometimes dramatic and urgent aspects, must always be left to the human person,” Francis insisted. “We would condemn humanity to a future without hope if we took away people’s ability to make decisions about themselves and their lives, by dooming them to depend on the choices of machines,” he said.

  • The US military staged an undercover social media campaign at the height of the pandemic to smear the Chinese Covid vaccine, Reuters has reported. The Pentagon’s campaign to disparage the Chinese vaccine ran between the spring of 2020 and mid-2021, focusing on the Philippines before spreading to other parts of Asia and the Middle East, the agency claimed in an article on Friday. It relied on fake social media accounts impersonating Filipino users to disseminate claims that China’s Sinovac vaccine, as well test kits and face masks produced by the country, was of poor quality. Sinovac, which began being rolled out in March 2021, became the first jab available to the Philippines during the pandemic.

  • Today, the European Union is beginning to resemble Albania during its dictatorship in the second half of the twentieth century. Its main achievement was the construction of hundreds of thousands of defenses along its borders with all its neighbors. A program to build 200,000 bunkers throughout the territory of this small country in the Western Balkans was adopted by the ruling regime in the early 1970s and consistently implemented until the late 1980s. As a result, the bunkers were literally scattered all over, and became the best-known symbol of Albania. At the same time, they exposed what happens when paranoia becomes the main driving force behind all foreign policy. Many Western European politicians are now leading their nations down this path, and they are getting away with it. A few days ago, the head of the EU’s bureaucracy, Ursula von der Leyen, visited Finland and then happily wrote on a social network that she was impressed by how quickly the country had managed to build 50,000 underground bomb shelters for use in the event of ‘Russian aggression’. ~ Timofey Bordachev

  • Apple has systematically paid female employees less than men for the same work and favors males in performance evaluations, according to a lawsuit filed by two female employees. The two individuals, who have worked at the US tech giant for more than a decade, launched the proceedings on Thursday at a court in San Francisco. The class action represents over 12,000 current and former female members of staff across the corporation’s engineering, marketing, and AppleCare divisions, a law firm representing the plaintiffs said. According to the complaint, Apple bases employees’ starting salaries on their “pay expectations,” which results in lower rates for women.

  • [Hollywoodism] NASA has set its sights on the moon, aiming to send astronauts back to the lunar surface by 2026 and establish a long-term presence there by the 2030s. But the moon isn’t exactly a habitable place for people. Cosmic rays from distant stars and galaxies and solar energetic particles from the sun bombard the surface, and exposure to these particles can pose a risk to human health. Earth has a magnetic field that provides a shield against high-energy particles from space. But the moon doesn’t have a magnetic field, leaving its surface vulnerable to bombardment by these particles. During a large solar energetic particle event, the radiation dosage an astronaut receives inside a space suit could exceed 1,000 times the dosage someone on Earth receives. That would exceed an astronaut’s recommended lifetime limit by 10 times.

  • A team has studied 57 nearby stars, analyzing the brightnesses and energies of their X-ray emissions, as well how quickly their X-ray outputs change due to stellar flares. “We have identified stars where the habitable zone’s X-ray radiation environment is similar to or even milder than the one in which Earth evolved,” research scientist Sarah Peacock of University of Maryland, Baltimore County said in the statement. “Such conditions may play a key role in sustaining a rich atmosphere like the one found on Earth.” While only some of the 57 stars have known habitable exoplanets, there are likely many more habitable exoplanets out there — we just haven’t found them yet. For context, we’ve discovered more than 5,500 exoplanets, but there are nearly 10,000 more candidates that are undergoing evaluation. Ultimately, there are likely billions of exoplanets just in the Milky Way galaxy alone.
