  • Just over 400 travellers came to Namibia last month, as the country’s lockdown lapsed, effectively opening up its borders. Of these, 294 travelled to the country for the purpose of tourism. Tourists made up the bulk of travellers who arrived in the country during this period, representing 70% of total foreign arrivals during this time. The remainder of the arrivals included 14 returning residents, three same-day visitors, 88 people listed as undefined, and 21 people listed as other. Environment spokesperson Romeo Muyunda told The Namibian that the ministry had no projections of what arrivals would look like once the lockdown lapsed. However, they are happy with the turnout. β€œThis is work in progress. We are hopeful that more tourists will come as countries ease restrictions across the world,” Muyunda said.

  • New York prosecutors were asked by Jeffrey Epstein’s victims to investigate the late pedophile and his alleged madam, Ghislaine Maxwell, twice in 2016 but refused both times. The New York Daily News revealed on Tuesday that David Boies, a lawyer for some of Epstein’s victims, met with Amanda Kramer, the top human trafficking prosecutor in the Manhattan US Attorney’s Office, twice that year and urged her to open a case. The first meeting was in February and the second was in July. Lawyers Stan Pottinger, Bradley Edwards and Peter Skinner also attended the February meeting. In February, they told Kramer that Epstein was running a sexual trafficking ring that involved Maxwell procuring young girls for him. They asked her to look at the case but Kramer resisted, saying there was nothing for her to add to it that hadn’t been addressed by the US Attorney in Florida, who’d convicted Epstein years earlier on the same allegations.

  • 60-year-old Adel Abdel Bary, or Bari, an Egyptian national who was given asylum in Britain in the 1990s with the help of Amnesty International, will be released from federal prison in the U.S. in the coming weeks. He was granted early release on compassionate grounds due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Times β€” as an older and excessively fat man he is considered at-risk. Bary had been serving time for his role in the infamous U.S. embassy bombing in Kenya and Tanzania, which left hundreds dead and thousands wounded.

The Beatles

Rome prosecutor’s office is the first in Europe to seek judgment for the group of ISIS kidnappers, which kidnapped about forty hostages. The US has transferred two of them to Virginia with a rendition operation. The Beatles – nicknamed by prisoners because of their English accents – have used torture methods including waterboarding and electrocution. According to a freed italian hostage Federico Motka, they were the most feared of the jihadists because of their propensity to beat the captives, and their taste for the macabre, which included: use of electric shock Taser guns, and mock executions (including a crucifixion). The Beatles, who were assigned responsibility for guarding foreign hostages by ISIL commanders, were harsher than other ISIL guards. The Beatles were interested in obtaining ransoms for their hostages. At one point, they were temporarily removed from their guard duties by ISIL because of their excessive brutality. The Beatles’ cell held at least 40 foreign hostages, nearly all of whom were ransomed or killed.

Rama X

Angela Merkel’s government has warned Thailand the Thai king Rama X should stop conducting state business from German soil, in an unusual intervention that comes at a time of nationwide student protests in the kingdom. The issue of the king’s foreign residence has now become a flashpoint in Thai domestic politics, with members of the student-led protest movement that has been holding regular demonstrations since July often making critical or satirical references to the fact that he lives in Germany. Maria Adebahr, spokeswoman for the German foreign ministry, said on Friday that the government had repeatedly stressed to Thailand’s ambassador to Berlin that β€œforeign affairs of state should not be pursued from German soil”. β€œWe have made our position very clear,” she said. Green party politicians in the state of Bavaria, who have questioned the king’s tax status, say they have established that he was living in a villa in Tutzing on Starnberger Lake near Munich.

A unique, giant Cold War-era ekranoplan flying vessel was spotted – and spectacularly filmed from above – on a sandy beach in Russia’s Dagestan republic, where a military theme park is set to be built. Drone footage captured by Ruptly video agency captured the bizarre-looking ekranoplan lying on the shore of the Caspian Sea near the Dagestan city of Derbent. The 400-ton vehicle looks pretty much like an aircraft because of its wings and turbofan engines, but it was actually a maritime vessel armed with supersonic missiles.

NASA has today confirmed, for the first time, that there is water on the sunlit surface of the moon. The revelation means it is possible water is easily accessible and not just in the deep, permanently shadowed craters of the south pole, as was previously thought. A separate piece of research found these so-called ‘cold traps’, which are always in shadow, may contain up to 15,000 square miles – 40,000 square km – of water.
