  • To save the Nitting-Voyer-Hermelange school and reach the minimum number of 98 requested by the ministry, some parents enrolled 4 sheep with their first and last names. Four sheep have been registered at a French primary school as part of a novel bid to save classes at risk of closure. The sheep in a symbolic move to tackle what parents have described as a “miserable situation”. Children were involved in a welcome ceremony for their new classmates. The farm animals were provided by a local herder who with the help of his dog escorted the new pupils along to the school to see them officially signed up with their birth certificates. One of the parents behind the initiative, told Le Parisien newspaper: “National education is unfortunately only numbers. And so now, with this surge in numbers, we are good.”

  • Puberty makes teenagers’ armpits smell of cheese, goat and even urine, scientists in Germany have discovered. The particular chemical compounds that make up pubescent body odour have been singled out. The study compared infants under three years old with 14- to 18-year-olds and found teenagers had two particular chemical compounds that smell of sweat, urine, musk and sandalwood, which were not present in babies. Infants, on the other hand, had higher levels of a ketone that smells flowery and soapy. Helene Loos, of the Friedrich-Alexander University in Germany, and her colleagues adapted T-shirts and babygrows with cotton pads sewn into the armpits. The pads from the teenagers’ armpits had two steroids present – 5alphaandrost-16-en-3-one and 5alphaandrost-16-en-3alpha-ol – which smell of sweat, urine, musk and sandalwood. They also had higher levels of six carboxylic acids, which give off unattractive smells including cheese, goat and wax.

  • A recent study by Harvard University, spanning over 30 years and tracking 1,14,000 participants, has highlighted the risks associated with consuming ultra-processed foods (UPF). Ultra-processed foods are those food items that contain additives and ingredients not commonly found in home kitchens, such as artificial sweeteners, colours, and preservatives. These are foos that are high in saturated fats and lack nutrients and fibre. So, it’s best to limit these kinds of foods in your diet.

  • The Libyan Attorney General’s Office has ordered the detention of high-ranking customs officials in connection with a massive gold smuggling operation. The involved parties allegedly facilitated the illicit transfer of approximately 26,000 kilograms of gold through Misrata Airport’s customs, violating national regulations. The Attorney General’s office stated that the customs officials, including the Director-General of the Customs Authority and the Head of Misrata Airport Customs, deliberately conspired with others to smuggle 25,875 kilograms of gold bars. This act was aimed at obtaining unlawful financial benefits. The investigation has revealed that these officials engaged in “irrational behaviors” by breaching regulatory laws intentionally. According to the World Gold Council, Libya holds the second-largest gold reserves in Africa, with a net total of 147 tons as of 2023. This vast reserve underscores the significance of the recent smuggling incident, highlighting potential vulnerabilities in the management and security of the nation’s gold assets.

  • The University of Cambridge has been accused of pandering to “mad Americans” after swapping the term Anglo-Saxon out for Early Medieval in a world-leading journal. During a relaunch announcement on Monday, Cambridge University Press said it was “delighted” to rename Anglo-Saxon England, a journal which has been running since the 1970s, as Early Medieval England and its Neighbours. The University said the new name reflects the “international, interdisciplinary and rapidly evolving nature of research in this field.” However, the decision has been criticised by Dominic Sandbrook, a prominent author and historian who voiced his concerns to The Telegraph.

  • Sony, the cat imprisoned in the Ancón I Piedras Gordas prison in Peru. The video of the discovery was published by the Ministry on TikTok (@minjusdhperu) and the cat immediately became a star, arousing the curiosity of hundreds of people who wondered where it came from, what it was doing in a maximum prison safety and who has taken care of him all these months. And, to the surprise of many, it turned out that Sony, this is his name, was not a criminal as “theorized” at first, but rather lives near the penitentiary center, where he found a large human family who takes care of him. He is loved and pampered by everyone, both workers and prisoners. And although he is free to go out whenever he wants, he has a number of favorite places where he goes to sleep, eat and play, with an almost universal pass, as he is able to slip freely between the bars of the security gates.

  • Italian police on Tuesday said they had uncovered a gang of drug dealers testing a remote-controlled submarine which they were most likely planning to use for smuggling. The organisation was based around the northern Italian city of Turin and was suspected of trafficking “significant amounts” of cocaine, hashish and marijuana, police said in a statement. During the investigation, police seized more than 204 kg (450 lb) of drugs. The small submarine, which the traffickers had designed and tested, was not yet operational.

  • [Hollywoodism] NASA has appointed its first-ever chief artificial intelligence (AI) office. That person is David Salvagnini, who was serving as NASA’s chief data officer. “Artificial intelligence has been safely used at NASA for decades, and as this technology expands, it can accelerate the pace of discovery,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said in a statement (May 13) announcing the appointment. “It’s important that we remain at the forefront of advancement and responsible use,” Nelson added. “In this new role, David will lead NASA’s efforts to guide our agency’s responsible use of AI in the cosmos and on Earth to benefit all humanity.”

  • [Burned Brains] In a new study published March 30 in the journal Nature’s Communications Engineering, researchers explained how they developed a transmitter that can dynamically adjust the waves needed to support future 6G signals. The most advanced cellular communications standard is 5G. Expected to be thousands of times faster, 6G will begin rolling out in 2030, according to the trade body GSMA. Unlike 5G, which mostly operates in bands under 6 gigahertz (GHz) in the electromagnetic spectrum, 6G is expected to operate in sub-terahertz (THz) between 100 GHz and 300 GHz, and THz bands — just below infrared. The closer this radiation is to visible light, the more prone the signals are to be blocked by physical objects. A major challenge with high-frequency 5G and future 6G is that signals need a direct line of sight between a transmitter and receiver. But in the experiments, the scientists showed that you can effectively “curve” high-frequency signals around obstacles such as buildings. “This is the world’s first curved data link, a critical milestone in realizing the 6G vision of high data rate and high reliability,” said Edward Knightly.

Archaeo – Histories

“It took me years to realize that Inca and pre-Columbian architecture is directly related to the structure of the Corn Kernels. In a western model of thought, one might judge the shapes as irregular, but in a universal thought, everything is a correlation between the cosmos, science, art and humanity.” (Fractal Nature)

As you can see, the organic growth forms are represented in a logarithmic way, and the fact that these pentagonal, hexagonal and heptagonal blocks coincide with the corn forms. – Juan Casco

The lack of symmetry in the walls helps dissipate the energy of the earthquakes. They were incredible engineers. Japanese researchers studied Machu Picchu after the Kobe earthquake and realised that these Inca structures had not been damaged by an earthquake.
