News Burst 15 March 2023 – Featured News

  • In order to tame inflation, governments in the West began to raise interest rates. There is a historic correlation between higher interest rates and failures of overleveraged financial institutions. Overleveraging occurs when a business has borrowed too much money and is unable to pay interest or principal repayments, or maintain payments for its operating expenses. Interest rates in the US have been hiked on more than one occasion over the past year, and many analysts warn they are currently too high at 4.5%-4.75% to keep financial bubbles from bursting. Traders and analysts claim the panic is already ripe and could further push investors to move funds from small banks to what they view as the safety of large systemically important lenders. This would drain liquidity from the latter and may lead to their downfall.

  • Moody’s Investors Service announced on Tuesday it is placing the First Republic Bank and five other American lenders on review for a downgrade. The move comes as concerns grow over the health of the US financial system following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and two other lenders. Zions Bancorporation, Western Alliance Bancorporation, Comerica, UMB Financial Corporation and Intrust Financial Corporation were all on the list, Moody’s revealed. The agency cited concerns over the lenders’ reliance on uninsured deposit funding and unrealized losses in their asset portfolios.

  • The run on Silicon Valley Bank and two other investment houses has sent shockwaves through the financial markets. US President Joe Biden has pledged that all depositors will get their money back — while investors will lose out — and claimed that will not cost the taxpayer a cent. Economists have warned that the US Treasury is simply “printing money” to bail out banks brought down by its own attempts to tame inflation.

  • A vessel allegedly linked to the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines is currently anchored off the north-east coast of Germany in the Baltic Sea, Der Spiegel has reported. The German news website also claimed one of the e-mail addresses used by the alleged bombers might point to Ukrainian involvement. According to Monday’s report, Der Spiegel journalists found the ‘Andromeda’ yacht on the Bug peninsula in the Dranske municipality, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region, which used to serve as a base for the German Democratic Republic’s Navy.

  • Former US President Donald Trump has said he doesn’t want Washington to support regime change in Russia but would like to see one happen in his own country. He made the remark in his reply to a questionnaire on the Ukraine crisis that Fox News host Tucker Carlson had sent to declared and potential Republican candidates seeking the party’s 2024 presidential nomination. “We should support regime change in the United States, that’s far more important. The Biden administration are the ones who got us into this mess,” Trump responded to one of the questions.

  • Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has endorsed the order to expel monks of the canonical Orthodox church from the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, insinuating they were agents of Russia. Moscow has called on all Christian churches, as well as the UN and other international organizations, to respond to the “outrageous” decision. He also claimed the steps his government was undertaking were “completely legal” and had the full support of the Ukrainian public.

  • Animal advocacy group PETA has urged Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to close the Pentagon’s animal experimentation program that uses radio frequencies to attempt to determine the cause of the mysterious “Havana Syndrome” cropping up among US diplomats. In a letter on Monday the activists cited a recent US Office of National Intelligence report and pointed out that the experiments are not only “cruel and wasteful but also, frankly, futile.”

  • Washington is so determined to prevent China from seizing control of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry that it would destroy the chip factories in the event of an “invasion” by Beijing’s forces, former US National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien said on Monday. “The United States and its allies are never going to let those factories fall into Chinese hands,” O’Brien told the online media outlet Semafor. Allowing China capture the plants would make the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) “like the new OPEC of silicon chips,” enabling it to “control the world economy,” he added.

  • The UK government has earmarked an additional £5 billion ($6 billion) for bolstering the country’s military capabilities, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak revealed in a statement published on Monday. Britain’s nuclear deterrent is among the areas that will receive investment. Downing Street said the newly unveiled appropriations were in addition to a previous increase in 2020, which envisaged the allocation of £24 billion ($29 billion) over the following four years. Explaining the need for the move, Sunak cited the “challenges of an increasingly volatile and complex world.”

  • This is going to disappoint Trekkies everywhere, but what was thought to be a real-life version of the exoplanet Spock calls home is actually not a planet at all. Vulcan (for the uninitiated) is the planet in the “Star Trek” universe which orbits the actual star 40 Eridani A in the constellation of Eridanus. When a research team thought they had discovered a real-life version of that planet, 40 Eri b, in 2018, it thrilled the entire fandom. Now a new study that reexamined exoplanet candidates has disproved that planet’s existence. Unfortunately, the gravitational pull thought to be exerted by the planet was really just caused by the star’s surface acting up. “We present strong evidence that the planet HD26965 b (o2 Eri b, 40 Eri b) reported [in 2018] is not a planet, and is rather caused by stellar activity,” the researchers wrote in a new study.

  • Every year, NASA and science entities around the world launch math-themed activities to encourage kids and adults alike to celebrate Pi Day — March 14 (3/14) in the U.S., as the irrational number pi begins with the digits 3.14. There’s no lack of math marketing this year, as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory launched its annual Pi Day Challenge for students to experiment with math and space, highlighting name-brand missions like the life-hunting Perseverance rover on Mars and the soon-to-launch Psyche spacecraft targeting a metal asteroid.
