  • Twitter is offering free ad space to brands that run advertising campaigns on the platform, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing company emails. According to the report, Twitter will match the funds brands spend on their ads, with two conditions. First, the spending must not exceed $250,000. Second, the full volume of ads including Twitter’s incentive – up to $500,000 in total – must run by February 28. Last month, media reported of a similar action by the platform, that time offering to match up to $500,000 in ad spending if the ads ran by the end of the year. Twitter has not yet commented on the report. The platform began losing advertisers shortly after Elon Musk took over at the end of October, with brands wary of his approach to content moderation and other changes he brought to the platform. The companies which suspended ad spending include General Motors, Pfizer, United Airlines, Mondelez, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Ford and Jeep. Musk said at the time that due to their exit, the platform had suffered “a massive drop in revenue” and was losing $4 million daily.

  • A Playboy model-turned-aristocrat has defied an Italian judge’s ruling demanding that she vacate a 16th-century villa that houses a unique Caravaggio ceiling fresco. On top of a bitter ownership feud with the sons of her late husband, Princess Rita Boncompagni Ludovisi has been accused of neglecting the historical building. Villa Aurora, estimated to be worth some $539 million, has the world’s only Caravaggio mural, which depicts the Olympian gods Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto. The princess has been embroiled in a long-running inheritance dispute with the three sons of her late husband, Prince Nicolo Boncompagni Ludovisi, after his death in 2018.

  • A slangy “dress code” included in a computer science course syllabus at historically black college North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University has reportedly been removed after social media users complained it was “anti-black,” despite its author being a black man himself, Forbes reported on Thursday. The instructor, named by several Twitter users as NC A&T professor Derrick LeFlore, warned his undergraduate students that “Bonnets, Durag [sic], Hoodies, Booty Shorts, Coochie Cutter Shorts, Twerk Shorts” were forbidden in the classroom. “If you wear it to bed or the club, don’t wear it to [class],” the syllabus, posted to Twitter last week, warned. LeFlore appeared to request a “business casual” dress code from his students, though the full text of the dress code was cut off in the posted screenshot. While the professor is himself black, the selection of clothing items he chose to forbid – and the language he used to describe them – led some to accuse him of anti-blackness.

  • Two British schools announced this week that they would ban all forms of physical contact between students – forbidding “hand-holding,” “hugging,” and the forming of romantic relationships. Parents complained to local media, but one school argued that “anything could happen” if children were allowed to socialize normally. Hylands School in Chelmsford and Southchurch High School in Southend both made the announcements this week. In a letter to parents, Hylands assistant headteacher Catherine McMillan said that her school would no longer “tolerate any physical contact within our community,” EssexLive reported on Tuesday. This includes “any aggressive physical contact, hugging, holding hands, slapping someone, etc,” McMillan continued. “This is in order to keep your child safe. If your child is touching somebody else, whether they are consenting or not, anything could happen. It could lead to an injury, make someone feel very uncomfortable, or someone being touched inappropriately.”

  • Twitter executives knew that several hashtags denounced by leading congressional Democrats and corporate media as “Russian disinformation” were a product of authentic Americans, but chose not to say so in public, journalist Matt Taibbi revealed on Thursday. Taibbi has been publishing the “Twitter Files,” internal company documents provided by the company’s new owner, Elon Musk, since early December. Evidence published so far shed light on the censorship of key stories ahead of the 2020 presidential election, FBI pressure, direct White House interference on Covid-19 matters, and the banning of Donald Trump – the sitting US president at the time. Thursday’s revelations concern the events of January and February 2018 and the memo by Republican Congressman Devin Nunes of California detailing how the FBI used the “Steele Dossier” to spy on Trump’s campaign and presidency. Democrats and major media outlets denounced Nunes in what Taibbi described as “oddly identical language,” while attributing the calls to #ReleaseTheMemo to “Russian bots” and “trolls.”

  • The Ukrainian parliament on Thursday passed a new law that expands perks offered to foreigners who sign up to serve in the country’s military. Sponsors of the bill specifically singled out the controversial Azov regiment as an intended beneficiary of the measure. Azov originated as a group of far-right volunteers who in 2014 took up arms against Donbass forces with Kiev’s blessing. The unit was incorporated into the National Guard, a structure separate from the army, in November of that year. The new legislation has added the wording “and other military units” to several laws that previously only covered the main Ukrainian armed forces. A formal justification of the bill said that there are many foreign nationals serving in Azov, but that the existing legal framework makes their presence in Ukraine illegal and does not allow them to request Ukrainian citizenship. The new law is meant to change that.

  • The Romanian government is planing to cut financial support provided to unemployed Ukrainian refugees in the country so as to encourage them to find a job, Romanian media reported on Saturday. According to the report, the Romanian authorities are considering cutting financial support for Ukrainian refugees after having spent over 500 million euros ($540 million) in public and private funds for this purpose. The goal of planned changes is to incentivize migrants to find a job and start learning the Romanian language, the broadcaster added. Under current assistance programs, any Ukrainian citizen in Romania could receive an unconditional financial assistance of over 2,000 lei ($440).

  • Traces of chocolate, a food made from cocoa beans, were discovered by archaeologists in pottery artifacts believed to have been used by the ancient Mayo-Chinchipe culture 5,300 years ago – which just goes to show how people’s love for this confection runs deep. We all know that whether liquid, solid, or paste, this food product made from roasted and ground seed kernels of the cocoa tree fruit has a whole lot going for it. It is chock-full of hundreds of chemical compounds, some of which can trigger the brain’s pleasure centers to alter our mood. The actual physical process that starts from the moment one pops some chocolate into one’s mouth was analyzed by the study, published in the scientific journal ACS Applied Materials and Interface.

  • According to Wagner fighters, most recently, Ukrainian forces used this chemical weapon on Trudovye Rezervy street in Bakhmut on January 7. As a result of the attack, Russian soldiers suffered severe burns. They were evacuated from the battlefield and hospitalized. The claims of the Russian forces have traditionally been ignored by the MSM. However, new videos released by Ukrainian sources confirmed that the AFU used chemical weapons. Most likely, these ammunition are filled with hydrogen cyanide (HCN) which is a poisonous volatile liquid. 85-90% of poisoning cases end in death. According to the Ukrainian militant’s claims, the video was made by the commander of a separate tactical aerial reconnaissance group ” Birds of Magyar “, Robert Iosifovich Brovdi ( Vladimir Ilyashevich Batsko). The video released by Ukrainian sources indicates that the production and use of chemical weapons on the front lines was a private initiative.

  • US President Joe Biden has found himself drawn into a legal and political quagmire over his handling of classified government records hailing back to his time as US vice president, with Attorney General Merrick Garland appointing veteran prosecutor Robert Hur as a special counsel on Thursday to handle the investigation. To date, the total cache of documents known to be marked classified and discovered at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement and the Wilmington, Delaware, private residence of President Joe Biden numbers roughly 20, according to a source cited by US media. Some of the recovered papers were marked “top secret.” It was in this batch of documents that some were marked as belonging to the highest of the three basic levels of classification, according to a cited federal law enforcement source. While the first two levels are confidential, and secret, a leak of “top secret” information could be fraught with “exceptionally grave damage.” The White House confirmed on January 12 that a second batch of records bearing classified markings had been found in the home of the 46th POTUS in Wilmington.

  • Astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope have recorded a star’s final moments in detail as it gets gobbled up by a black hole. These are termed “tidal disruption events.” But the wording belies the complex, raw violence of a black hole encounter. There is a balance between the black hole’s gravity pulling in star stuff, and radiation blowing material out. In other words, black holes are messy eaters. For any given galaxy with a quiescent supermassive black hole at the center, it’s estimated that the stellar shredding happens only a few times in every 100,000 years.
