  • The US military’s secretive X-37B unmanned spacecraft has touched down at Florida’s Kennedy Space Center after completing a classified mission that included orbiting the planet for a record 908 days. The reusable space drone returned to Earth on Saturday morning, having broken its previous record of 780 days in orbit. The Orbital Test Vehicle-6 (OTV-6) mission also marked the first time that the plane went into space with a service module attached, increasing the number of experiments that could be conducted, the US Space Force said in a statement. “The X-37B continues to push the boundaries of experimentation, enabled by an elite government and industry team behind the scenes,” said Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Fritschen, program director for the spacecraft.

  • 2023: the days coincide with those of 2017.

  • Some 150 cubic meters of roundwood worth €10,400 ($10,388) have been stolen from Estonian private forests in the last ten months, state broadcaster ERR reported this week, citing the State Forest Management Centre (RMK). At the same time, almost 126 cubic meters of cut and stacked underbrush worth €3,850 ($3,845) have reportedly been stolen from state forests. The number of thefts has increased, the RMK Chief Forest Officer for the Tartu Region Toomas Haas told the media, adding that this is happening in spite of heightened surveillance among RMK employees, who keep watch over cutting and timber storage areas on a daily basis.

  • Headline inflation in Norway hit a new three-decade high of 7.5% in October, exacerbating fears of a looming recession in the Nordic region, Bloomberg reported this week. Core inflation, as monitored by the country’s central bank, Norges Bank, hit an all-time high of 5.9%, above the market consensus and the bank’s own forecast. Statistics seen by the media outlet show that the price growth was driven by clothing and communications in particular.

  • UK and France are aiming to strike a deal that will help both countries coordinate their efforts to fight illegal migration. Agreement implies the creation of joint control center and an increase in the number of officers and volunteers operating on the English Channel beaches. According to British media, about 40,000 migrants have already crossed the Channel this year. It is an almost 400% increase compared to 2020, when only about 8,000 people made the crossing to Britain from France. Migrants commonly enter the Shengen area via the Mediterranean coast and then head to the UK. The majority of migrants come from Albania (18%), Afghanistan (18%) and Iran (15%)

  • Kiev tested nasal analgesic drugs developed by the West for NATO, at multiple labs on the Ukrainian-occupied territories in the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), a source tells Sputnik. “A scheme was uncovered in the Lugansk region, where Western pharmaceutical companies were conducting blind tests of the latest drug-containing nasal anesthetic” for the needs of Ukraine and its NATO allies, the source said. According to the source, after the tests, the drugs were used by Ukrainian troops. Meanwhile, a lecturer at the Lugansk Medical University, the chief sanitary doctor of the LPR, who participated in various medical tests before 2014, told Sputnik that the West has been carrying out lab tests in Ukraine in order to cut costs on volunteers and medical specialists. “Most importantly, in case of failure of these studies, the results would not have been made public as quickly as it would have happened in any European country,” the chief sanitary doctor of the LPR told Sputnik.

  • 321 British parliamentarians have obtained an irish passport. By August passport claims at London’s Irish Embassy were reportedly up by 104%, while Northern Ireland hosted an increase of 80%. Two hundred temporary workers were even hired by Ireland’s government to combat the flood of incoming paperwork. The UK’s Home Secretary has implied that, once Brexit takes full effect, a British passport will lose all status as an EU passport. Meaning, in the worst foreseeable case, a paid visa would be required to enter the Schengen free-travel zone. Or, at best, some online registration would be enforced before visiting.

News Burst 14 November 2022 - Masazir Lake Azerbaijan

Masazir Lake, Azerbaijan

There are some 49 so-called pink lakes around the world. The most popular of these are Lake Hiller, Laguna Hutt, and Koyash Lake. Almost all of the world’s pink lakes are saltier than the ocean, and their unique color is the result of algae and bacteria that thrive in salt water. Australia has an impressive collection of pink lakes, and Lake Hillier is one of the most popular. Hiller Lake stays the same shade of pink throughout the year, thanks to the presence of the algae Dunaliella salina, red halophilic archaea, and other microorganisms. In Koyash Lake, located on the Crimean Peninsula, the color of the water varies from pink to red, depending on the season. Like many saltwater lakes, it is filled with halobacteria, microorganisms that produce a pink protein when absorbing solar energy. Pink lakes are not only beautiful, but also useful for the prevention of many diseases. Dunaliella salina is a unique organism that can synthesize useful compounds such as b-carotene provitamin A, glycerol, and unsaturated fatty acids in extremely high salt concentrations.
