- Israeli-based Aleph Farms Ltd. has created the world’s first slaughter-free steak using three-dimensional “bio-printing” and real cells from a cow. Aleph teamed up with biomedical researchers at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology to print lab-grown ribeyes intended for human consumption without slaughtering an animal. If you thought 3D printed steaks are weird, California food company Eat Just Inc. received the all-clear by Singapore to sell lab-grown chicken meat.
- Colt Holding Co., while suspending production of rifles for the civilian market, including the popular AR-15, has been purchased by a Czech firearms company, ending a 175-year run as an American company. It also marks a new chapter for Colt, a one-time financially troubled company that, with its new Czech owner, is now expected to generate $500 million in revenue.
- As their dishonest narrative collapses around them, mainstream media outlets and Democrat politicians are trying to hold together their latest bid to destroy Donald Trump, but some of the lies are getting too big to shrug off.
- On Tuesday (Feb. 9), the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Hope mission successfully reached orbit around Mars. This is the UAE’s first-ever interplanetary mission, and its successful orbital insertion makes it the fifth entity to reach the Red Planet, joining NASA, the Soviet Union, the European Space Agency and India. Hope is an orbiter that will help scientists study the Martian atmosphere.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s calls to make India “self-reliant” have picked up pace in the tech sphere. Over the past ten days, local alternatives to Twitter and WhatsApp, dubbed Koo and Sandes respectively, have debuted in the country. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has partnered with MapmyIndia, an Indian technology company that builds digital map data, to create a local alternative to Google Maps.
- Major financial institutions such as Visa and Mastercard along with the International Monetary Fund, billionaire Bill Gates and the US Treasury, have been lobbying for cash to be abolished worldwide and replaced with digital only currencies. Dr Norbert Häring is a financial journalist and author of popular books on economics. In 2015, Häring initiated a lawsuit within the German court system for the right to pay his fees to public broadcasters in cash. The CJEU delivered its judgment in the case of German plaintiffs arguing for the right to pay their broadcasting fees in cash. It stated that yes, in principle, euro banknotes and coins are legal tender, and their acceptance as a means of payment in EU Member States is mandatory. However, Member States can also insist on payments being made by non-cash means if it’s in their “public interest”.
- Facebook has deleted the official account of actor Kevin Sorbo, an avowed Donald Trump supporter. Sorbo said on Twitter Friday that Facebook shut down his account, which had more than 500,000 followers.
- [Another Impeachment] Australian authorities have captured and killed a four-metre crocodile that allegedly murdered a fisherman in northern Queensland. A necropsy will be conducted on the animal to determine if it was responsible for the incident. The reptile’s alleged victim, 69-year-old Andrew Heard, disappeared earlier this week after going fishing in a creek. After a long search, Heard’s boat was found damaged and turned upside down.
- Long-awaited news about Elon Musk was confirmed during a Twitter exchange with Indian entrepreneur Kunal Shah, who asked the busy CEO how he could manage so many different companies. “I’m an alien,” he wryly responded. Needless to say, the banter triggered a slew of memes, with many laughing about the world’s “Worst kept secret.” “Is that why you’re building a Spaceship … to get back to your home planet?” asked one Twitter user.
- Dr. Vandana Shiva, founder of the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Natural Resource Policy, was awarded the Right Livelihood Award, also known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’. According Dr. Shiva the World Bank’s actions in 1991 were arguably the start of Indian farmers’ battle with global capitalism, and why India’s farmers are organising en masse to oppose Modi’s neoliberal farming laws. She sais that multinational farming corporations and their war on India’s independent farmers, the history of the spread of GMO technology such as ‘Roundup’, why a transition away from industrial farming back to small-scale farming is needed to fight climate change.
- Google has reached a payout agreement with an association of French publishers after a years-long battle over how it reuses snippets of their content. The US tech company agreed to pay L’Alliance de la presse d’information generale (APIG) $76 million over three years. Last year, APIG explained how Google “unilaterally decided that it would no longer display article extracts, photographs, and videos within its various services, unless the publishers give it to them, free of charge,” adding that “in practice, the vast majority of press publishers have granted Google free licenses for the use and display of their protected content, without negotiation and without receiving any remuneration from Google.” The two documents provided a framework agreement which says Google “is ready to pay $22 million annually in total to a group of 121 national and local French news publications after signing individual licensing agreements with each of them.” The second document outlines a settlement agreement where Google has agreed to pay $10 million to APIG “in exchange for their commitment to end all present and future potential litigation tied to copyright claims over the duration of the three-year agreement.”
