  • Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s national security adviser, Jody Thomas, has accused the anti-Covid-vaccine-mandate ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests of seeking to “overthrow the government” by occupying Ottawa. Speaking to the Ottawa Conference on Security and Defense on Thursday, Thomas claimed that “there is no doubt” that the organizers of the protest “came to overthrow the government,” with a well prepared demonstration that had supply chains and funding. The scale of the demonstrations prompted Trudeau to invoke the Emergencies Act for the first time in Canadian history, allowing the government to take extraordinary measures to respond to the protests and seek to disperse the activists after weeks of disruption.

  • Three men have been arrested by Lebanon’s Internal Security Forces in the town of Ghazieh. All are suspected of spying for Mossad and reportedly hail from the town of Beresheet. The men allegedly provided critical information and communicated with their employer through encrypted online messaging, according to information supposedly obtained through interrogation. The report on their capture also described how they were paid through the receipt of “dead letter drops” – packages placed for them in remote areas they were notified about through online messages.

  • The Prosecutor General of Russia has asked a court to formally designate Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, as an extremist organization, Russian news agencies reported on Friday. The request came after reports that the US-based social media giant had revised its policy and is now allowing posts that call for violence against Russian citizens, amid Moscow’s military offensive in Ukraine. Earlier, some Western media reported that Meta had decided to allow “posts on Ukraine war calling for violence against invading Russians or [for Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s death”.

  • Russia has called for a UN Security Council meeting to discuss purported US-backed biological weapons programs in Ukraine. Washington has denied that it owns or operates any such biolabs in the country, while Kiev insisted that the facilities were engaged only in civilian research. Moscow’s deputy UN envoy Dmitry Polyanskiy announced the move early on Friday, saying the mission had requested a Security Council summit for March 11, while citing a Defense Ministry briefing claiming that the United States and NATO allies ran “military biological programs” in Ukraine.

  • Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland appeared before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on March 8, testifying on the US and international response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. After delivering her opening remarks, the veteran US diplomat took questions from the committee members. One question, asked by Senator Marco Rubio, a Republican from the state of Florida, stood out. “Does Ukraine have chemical or biological weapons?” he asked. Nuland answered the question very deliberately. “Ukraine has biological research facilities which, in fact, we’re now quite concerned Russian troops, Russian forces may be seeking to gain control of, so we are working with the Ukrainians on how we can prevent any of those research materials from falling into the hands of Russian forces should they approach,” she said.

  • The heads of US intelligence agencies rejected allegations of bioweapons research and development taking place in Ukraine with Washington’s during Senate hearings on Thursday. Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told the Senate Intelligence Committee that Ukraine “operates a little over a dozen,” admitting that the US has “provided assistance” to the facilities at least in the past. Said “assistance” came only “in the context of biosafety”, she claimed, adding that it was “something we have done with a variety of different countries.”

  • Schools in Japan are banning girls from wearing ponytails as this style could sexually excite the schoolboys in their classes, ‘Vice’ reported, citing former middle school teacher, Motoki Sugiyama. The former teacher told the Canadian/American lifestyle magazine that he worked at five different schools in Shizuoka prefecture over 11 years and each of them banned the alluring hairstyle. He said school leaders told him that a ponytail is prohibited because it exposes the nape of the neck, something officials deem would get schoolboys too excited. School pupils are only permitted straight, black hair. Those whose hair doesn’t “adhere” to the rules, must submit proof that it is natural and not deliberately dyed or curled.

  • Hundreds of Indian firms producing aeronautical spare parts of Western-origin commercial aircraft may rescue Russian airlines facing a crisis due to the US-led “economic war”, an aviation expert says. Airplane manufacturers Boeing and Airbus have announced the suspension of parts, maintenance, and technical support for Russian airlines, as well as major operations in Moscow, following Russia launching a special military operation in Ukraine. “The aeronautical items directly produced by Indian companies can be exported to Russia without any hindrance”, Harsh Vardhan, a veteran aviation expert, sais. Vardhan says that Indian manufacturers are supplying spare parts for Boeing and Airbus aircraft to several countries under contractual arrangements.

  • The Biden administration does not have an alternative plan to secure oil supplies after it banned Russian oil and energy imports and may quickly face a recession in the United States, Kyle Shostak, director of the financial services firm Navigator Principal Investors, said. “From a domestic point of view, it is clear that the administration doesn’t have a substitute plan to lean on,” Shostak said. “The alternatives will be to go to Saudi Arabia and Venezuela and effectively subside these political regimes that will use every chance to negotiate their prices from a position of power.”

  • Hillary and Bill’s announcement of the revival of the Clinton Foundation’s Global Initiative, a fundraising vehicle said to cope with urgent international issues, has added to the fuss. Bloomberg notes that the Clinton Global Initiative “hosted annual meetings from 2005 to 2016, with the final meeting held less than two months before Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election to Donald Trump”. Following Clinton’s defeat, the Clinton Foundation received just $16.3 million in contributions in 2020, down from its 2016 peak of $62.9 million, prompting suspicions that it was used for apparent pay-to-play schemes. Meanwhile, the Global Initiative’s gathering is scheduled for September 2022, apparently signalling the Clintons’ return to politics, observers believe. “Clearly, Hillary Clinton has decided to run for president again and aims to use ‘her’ foundation and its supposed good works as a platform to raise financial and other support for another expensive political campaign”, says Charles Ortel, a Wall Street analyst, who has been investigating the Clinton Foundation for the last several years. According to Ortel, the Clinton Foundation as well as the Clinton Global Initiative have not been lawfully organised and managed and were largely used as an enrichment tool in influence peddling schemes.

  • A team of palaeontologists is currently working to resurrect the Christmas Island rat, which was wiped out from its isle home in the Indian Ocean more than a century ago. In a study published by the journal Current Biology, the researchers explained that they had managed to sequence the extinct rat’s DNA and map it to some of the animal’s closest living relatives, such as the Norway brown rat. The study revealed that although the scientists have already recovered 95% of the animal’s genome, the missing 5% may considerably complicate the de-extinction process.

  • In 2008, a person going by the name Satoshi Nakamoto published an article in which he described the concept of Bitcoin. His idea was met with scepticism and laughter. Fast forward to 2022, and Bitcoin is the most expensive cryptocurrency, with major companies accepting it as payment. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned individuals against investing in Bitcoin unless their names are on the list of Forbes’ richest individuals. He pointed to the cryptocurrency’s high volatility and decentralised system, saying the value of Bitcoin could be swayed by something as simple as a tweet by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. “Elon has tons of money, and he’s very sophisticated, so I don’t worry that his Bitcoin will randomly go up or down. I do think people get brought into these manias who may not have as much money to spare, so I’m not bullish on Bitcoin. If you have less money than Elon, you should probably watch out”, the Microsoft co-founder said.

  • A group scientists in Saudi Arabia has developed a system capable of producing water in the desert and allowing crops to grow. According to their article, published earlier this month in the journal ‘Cell Reports Physical Science’, their device uses solar panels (known as photovoltaic cells) and a unique hydrogel, which researchers invented. Researchers called their brainchild WEC2P, which stands for “water-electricity-crop co-production system”.

  • (il manifesto, May 21, 2019 “Rand Corp: How to overthrow Russia” – Manlio Dinucci 20.5.2019) – The United States Strategic Plan against Russia was drafted three years ago by the Rand Corporation. Washington headquartered Rand Corporation is “a global research organization that develops solutions to political challenges”: it has an army of 1,800 researchers, and other recruited specialists from 50 countries speaking 75 languages, they are distributed in offices and other locations in North America, Europe, Australia, and the Persian Gulf. Rand’s US staff lives and works in over 25 countries. The Rand Corporation, which defines itself as a “non-profit and a-partisan organization”, is funded by the Pentagon, US Army and Air Force, National Security Agencies (CIA and others), Agencies of other countries, and powerful non-governmental organizations. The new plan designed in 2019 was inspired by this model: “Overextending and Unbalancing Russia”, which is forcing the opponent to extend excessively to unbalance, and take it down. These are the main lines of attack outlined in Rand’s plan, on which the United States has actually moved in recent years. First of all – the plan established – Russia must be attacked on the most vulnerable side, that of its economy heavily dependent on gas and oil export: for this purpose trade and financial sanctions must be used, and at the same time, it must ensure that Europe decreases Russian natural gas import by replacing it with US liquefied natural gas. In the ideological and informational field, it is necessary to encourage internal protests, and at the same time undermine the image of Russia on the outside. In the military field, efforts must be made to ensure that the European NATO countries increase their forces in an anti-Russia function. The US may have a high probability of success and high benefits with moderate risks by investing more in strategic bombers, and long-range attack missiles directed against Russia. Deploying in Europe new intermediate-range nuclear missiles aimed at Russia gives them a high probability of success, but also involves high risks. Calibrating each option to obtain the desired effect – Rand concluded – Russia will end up paying the highest price in comparison with the US, but the US and its allies will have to invest large resources subtracting them from other purposes. As part of this strategy – the Rand Corporation plan envisaged in 2019 – «providing lethal aid to Ukraine would exploit Russia’s greatest external vulnerability, but any increase in weapons and military advice provided by the US to Ukraine should be carefully calibrated to increase the costs for Russia without provoking a much wider conflict in which due to its proximity Russia would have significant advantages ». It is precisely here – in what the Rand Corporation called “Russia’s greatest external vulnerability”, exploitable by arming Ukraine in a “calibrated way to increase costs for Russia – without provoking a much wider conflict” – that the break has occurred. Squeezed in the political, economic, and military grip that the US and NATO were increasingly tightening, ignoring the repeated warnings and proposals for negotiations by Moscow, Russia reacted with its military operation that destroyed in Ukraine over 2,000 military structures built and controlled not by Kyiv rulers but by US-NATO commands. The article that reported the Rand Corporation’s plan three years ago ended with these words: “The plan envisaged options are in reality only variants of this war strategy, the price of which in terms of sacrifices and risks is paid by all of us “. We European people are paying for it now, and we will pay more and more dear if we continue to be expendable pawns in the US-NATO strategy. [ il manifesto is an Italian national daily newspaper ].
