News Burst 12 June 2024

  • Tesla and SpaceX tycoon Elon Musk lashed out Monday at a partnership between OpenAI and Apple, saying the threat to data security will make him ban iPhones at his companies. “Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI.” In a series of posts on his social-media platform X, the former Twitter, the Tesla TSLA chief executive expressed doubts that OpenAI would protect Apple users’ security and privacy.

  • In a world first, scientists have literally opened a window into the human brain. They inserted a transparent panel into the skull of a patient and were able to collect high-resolution imaging data through it while the patient was awake and performing tasks, the first time such a feat has been achieved. The patient who volunteered for this pioneering study was 39-year-old Jared Hager, who suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) during a skateboarding accident in 2019. “This area of the brain, which is important for forming intentions and carrying out motor actions, has already been thoroughly studied via other methods in our lab,” explained Professor Richard Andersen, part of the team at Caltech, in a statement.

  • Musk has been feuding with Apple and its CEO, Tim Cook, since last year, after Apple stopped advertising on X after Musk endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory and some Apple ads were placed alongside pro-Nazi content. He’s also been feuding with OpenAI, a company he co-founded and later left. Musk started his own AI company, xAI, which he hopes will be a competitor to OpenAI. Musk sued OpenAI in March, claiming it put profits over humanity. OpenAI claimed Musk supported its for-profit plans but wanted to control the company.

  • The jury in Hunter Biden’s federal gun trial have reached a verdict after two days of deliberations. The 12-member jury will decide whether the 1st son is guilty of three charges related to a 2018 purchase of a gun, which prosecutors say violated federal law because he was addicted to crack cocaine at the time. Hunter has pleaded not guilty. If convicted on all three counts, he could face up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $750,000. The case marks the first time in US history that the child of a sitting president has gone on trial. The indictment was brought by special counsel David Weiss, who was appointed last year to oversee various Hunter Biden probes.

  • Scientists in China have engineered a virus using parts of the deadly Ebola to study the disease and its symptoms. A study detailing the experiment at Hebei Medical University has been published in Science Direct. A virus like Ebola needs extremely secure facilities that are Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4). Most of the labs around the world are BSL-2.

  • Wild African elephants address each other with name-like calls, a rare ability among animals. Researchers from CSU, Save the Elephants and ElephantVoices used machine learning to confirm that elephant calls contained a name-like component identifying the intended recipient. When the researchers played recorded calls, elephants responded affirmatively to calls that were addressed to them by calling back or approaching the speaker. “Dolphins and parrots call one another by ‘name’ by imitating the signature call of the addressee,” said lead author Michael Pardo, who conducted the study as an NSF postdoctoral researcher at CSU and Save the Elephants, a research and conservation organization based in Kenya. “By contrast, our data suggest that elephants do not rely on imitation of the receiver’s calls to address one another, which is more similar to the way in which human names work.” Arbitrary communication – where a sound represents an idea but does not imitate it – greatly expands communication capability and is considered a next-level cognitive skill.

  • Last week, Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene took a detour from grilling Anthony Fauci over COVID-19, to confront him with photos of beagles who had been subjected to animal testing experiments widely reported to be funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the National Institutes of Health (NIH), following a 2021 investigation series by the group White Coat Waste Project. “We should be recommending you to be prosecuted,” Greene told Fauci. “We should be writing a criminal referral because you should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity. You belong in prison,” she continued, adding “That man does not deserve to have a license. As a matter of fact, it should be revoked and he belongs in prison.” Only to discover that the NIH appears to have lied about funding the experiment, which involved beagles between 6 and 8 months old obtained from the kennels of the Pasteur Institute of Tunis. In the study, the beagles were sedated and then exposed to hundreds of sand flies that had been deprived of food for 24 hours. This exposure took place as part of research into zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL), a disease carried by sand flies that can affect dogs and humans.

  • Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart shared insights into Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs). Ross Coulthart’s transformation from a skeptic to a fervent investigator of UAPs is a narrative worth noting. Initially doubtful, his perspective shifted dramatically after encounters with key figures like David Grusch, who claimed knowledge of secretive UAP retrieval and reverse engineering programs. One of the central themes of Coulthart’s keynote was the persistent government cover-up and the mainstream media’s failure to adequately address the UAP issue. He criticized the systematic disinformation campaigns aimed at ridiculing and dismissing UAP sightings, despite the U.S. government’s admissions of their existence. Private aerospace companies and government officials were implicated in maintaining the secrecy, often misusing funds and exploiting legal loopholes to conceal information.

  • A new theory suggests that time might not be a fundamental aspect of our universe but rather an illusion created by quantum entanglement. Quantum entanglement occurs when particles become interconnected in such a way that the state of one instantly influences the state of another, regardless of distance. According to this theory, the perception of time emerges from the entanglement of objects with a reference clock. Consequently, without this entanglement, the universe would appear static and unchanging to an external observer. This idea challenges traditional views shaped by general relativity, where time is intertwined with the fabric of space and influenced by gravity. Researchers Alessandro Coppo and colleagues have explored this idea, proposing that time might emerge from the quantum interactions at a fundamental level. Their findings, published in Physical Review A, suggest that our experience of time could be a byproduct of quantum processes rather than a fundamental aspect of reality. This theory, while still in its early stages, opens up new avenues for understanding the nature of time and its role in the universe.

  • South Korea’s military said on Monday that Pyongyang appears to be setting up loudspeakers along the border in preparation for a tit-for-tat response to broadcasts by Seoul, the Associated Press (AP) news agency has reported. On Sunday, the South played a two-hour long anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcast into the North for the first time in six years. Seoul said that some North Korean soldiers who were engaged in unspecified work on the northern side of the border had crossed the military demarcation line between the two countries. The South Korean military fired warning shots, and the North’s soldiers immediately returned to their territory, according to AP. Most of the North Korean soldiers were reportedly carrying pickaxes and other construction tools.

  • German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron should abandon politics after their respective parties suffered damaging setbacks in the European Parliament elections. In a social media post on Monday, Medvedev claimed the outcome proves that Scholz and Macron are “respected by no one.” The former Russian leader linked the poor performance at the ballot box with the “idiotic economic and migration policy” pursued by the two leaders and their support for Ukraine “at the cost of [their] own citizens.”

  • By all appearances it looked as though Mother Nature came calling for the American leader at precisely the worst moment. During a commemorative ceremony for the 80th anniversary of D-Day in France, Joe Biden, 81, suddenly seemed very determined to have a seat, and not even his doting wife Dr Jill was going to stop the squat. Desperately in search of a chair, a throne or – as some have crudely speculated – a port-a-potty, Biden has once again made the United States the laughing stock of the entire world. As if in slow motion, Biden began his steady descent, looking as though he was stuck somewhere between one of those infamous ‘where am I?’ brain farts and a full-blown defecation. Breaking911, a X (formerly Twitter) account that boasts some 1 million followers, unabashedly asked “Did Biden shit his pants AGAIN?” That was a reference to a 2021 claim that the Vatican was forced to cancel a livestream of Biden’s meeting with Pope Francis because the president had a “bathroom accident.”
