  • Thawing glaciers in the Swiss Alps revealed two sets of human remains this summer, as well as the wreckage of a 1968 plane crash that had been frozen beneath snow and ice. French climbers found skeletal remains on August 3, on the Chessjen glacier in the southern canton of Valais, in Switzerland. Dario Andenmatten, warden of a mountain hut many hikers start their ascents from, told The Guardian that he thought the person died “sometime in the 1970s or ’80s.” In late July, another body was found on the Stockji glacier, near a ski resort. Luc Lechanoine, one of the two hikers who discovered the body, told Swiss newspaper Blick the remains were mummified and slightly damaged and the person was wearing ’80s-style clothing. Police are still working to identify both sets of remains, according to The Guardian.

  • More than 30 FBI agents who spent over nine hours at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida on Monday refused to allow his attorneys or any witnesses be present, the former US president said on Wednesday, suggesting they might have used the opportunity to plant evidence against him. Federal agents left Trump’s lawyers and Mar-a-Lago staff outside in the 90-degree (33C) heat as they roamed the 128-room estate, even searching the master bedroom and former First Lady Melania Trump’s closet. “The FBI and others from the Federal Government would not let anyone, including my lawyers, be anywhere near the areas that were rummaged and otherwise looked at during the raid on Mar-a-Lago,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday. “Everyone was asked to leave the premises, they wanted to be left alone, without any witnesses to see what they were doing, taking or, hopefully not, ‘planting’. Why did they STRONGLY insist on having nobody watching them, everybody out?” he added.

  • Kevin McCarthy (R-California) and other Republican lawmakers have condemned President Joe Biden’s administration for raiding the Florida home of Donald Trump, warning that they will investigate politicization of the Department of Justice (DOJ) when they take back control of Congress. “Such an assault could only take place in broken, third-world countries,” he said. “Sadly, America has now become one of those countries – corrupt at a level not seen before.” Republicans in Congress fumed over the raid and demanded explanations from Garland and FBI Director Chris Wray. “Why don’t Chris Wray and Merrick Garland come in front of us this Friday and answer our questions?” Representative Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) asked. “If this is so important to go after President Trump in this unprecedented way, come and answer our questions in the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives.”

  • Switzerland cannot represent Ukraine’s diplomatic interests in Russia as it has given up its neutral status by joining anti-Russia sanctions, Moscow said on Thursday. Russian Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesman Ivan Nechayev explained that Bern has asked whether it can represent Ukraine in Russia and vice versa, and that in response, “we made it perfectly clear that unfortunately, Switzerland has lost its neutrality and cannot act as a mediator or a representative of interests.” Nechayev also noted that Switzerland has continued talks with Kiev despite knowing Moscow’s stance on the matter, which only confirmed that Bern “doesn’t really care about Russia’s interests.”

  • Two men have appeared in a German court on charges of raping an 18-year-old Ukrainian refugee girl in March this year. A 38-year-old Tunisian man identified only as Rachid B — in line with German rules in criminal cases — and a 26-year-old Nigerian, Abdullahi A, appeared at a court in Dusseldorf on Wednesday, covering their faces from gathered photographers. Newspaper Bild reported that their accuser was not present due to testing positive for COVID-19. She alleged that Rachid B followed her back to her cabin on the Oscar Wilde hotel boat. Just 10 minutes after the first man fled, Abdullahi A broke in and raped her again. The boat, moored on the river Rhine, was being used to house 25 refugees alongside paying guests.

  • A Nebraska teenager and her mother have been charged with a series of crimes relating to an illegal abortion, after authorities used a search warrant to access private Facebook messages in which they discussed ending the teen’s pregnancy. Between them they have been charged with several felonies and misdemeanors, including performing or attempting an abortion after 20 weeks and concealing a dead human body.

  • Washington is seeking to prolong the conflict in Ukraine as much as possible in order to weaken Moscow, China’s ambassador to Russia has suggested. In an interview with Russia’s TASS news agency published on Wednesday, Zhang Hanhui said, among other things, that it was the US that had initiated “five rounds of NATO’s eastward expansion, directed the ‘color revolution’ in Ukraine’ and ‘driven Russia into a corner’ in terms of security.” According to the diplomat, all these factors combined led to the current conflict in Ukraine. He went on to describe the US as the “initiator and chief arsonist of the Ukraine crisis.” The envoy pointed out that the US is pursuing effectively the same goals with respect to China as it is vis-à-vis Russia – to “hinder the development and rise of China, interfere in its internal affairs” as well as to “exhaust and contain it with the help of war and sanctions.”

  • Russian software entrepreneur Pavel Durov, who runs the company behind the popular messaging app Telegram, has slammed US tech giants for abusing their dominant market position. The latest tirade, which Durov shared on Telegram on Wednesday, was triggered by Apple apparently stalling the release of a new version of his messenger. “Our upcoming update – which is about to revolutionize how people express themselves in messaging – has been stuck in Apple’s ‘review’ for two weeks, without explanation or any feedback provided by Apple,” he complained. The review is supposed to allow the app store operator to check submitted code for any possible malware and confirm it is up to safety standards, before users can install it. Durov said the process was “discouraging” for his team, adding that “one can only imagine the difficulties experienced by smaller app developers.” “This harm goes on top of the 30% tax Apple and Google take from app developers – which, according to them, is supposed to pay for the resources needed to review apps,” the businessman added. “The regulators in the EU and elsewhere are slowly starting to look into these abusive practices. But the economic damage that has already been inflicted by Apple on the tech industry won’t be undone.”

  • The EU’s foreign-policy chief Josep Borrel has admitted that double standards permeate international relations, after being asked in an interview why Brussels was far more willing to support the people of Ukraine than the people of Gaza. The Middle East conflict is not in the EU’s hands, he said, pointing the finger at the US. “We are often criticized for double standards. But international politics is to a large degree about applying double standards. We do not use the same criteria for all problems,” he told El Pais newspaper, as cited on Thursday. Earlier in the interview, Borrell had said that supporting Kiev against Moscow was a “moral imperative” for Western nations. “Resolving the situation with those people trapped in an open-air prison, which Gaza is, is not in the hands of the EU,” the diplomat said. He called the squalid living conditions in Gaza “scandalous” and “a shame,” but would not be drawn on the origins of the humanitarian crisis.

  • Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) have developed three-dimensional dosimetric phantoms, or models, of lab rats or mice, which can completely replace these animals at certain stages. The introduction of new methods of radiation therapy requires many experiments on small laboratory animals, mostly mice and rats. However, the use of animals for laboratory purposes is inextricably connected with ethical problems. Moreover, their purchase, maintenance and disposal are very expensive. To reduce the use of laboratory animals in preclinical research, scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University have discovered a way to use phantoms, life-size artificial replicas. “We used mice and rats as prototypes to create replicas because they are the most common animal species used in preclinical studies. At the same time, we focused not only on creating phantoms but also on developing devices to increase the efficiency of radiation therapy and minimize the radiation dose to healthy tissues,” Anna Grigorieva, a postgraduate student at the TPU Research School of High-Energy Physics, said.

  • The average distance from the Sun to the Earth is approximately 94.26 million miles, but that is increasing. The Earth is moving away from the Sun, but don’t expect any cooler temperatures because of it. According to Livescience, the Earth’s average distance from the Sun is increasing, but at a very slow rate of about 2.36 inches a year. That pales in comparison to the variations in the distance between the Earth and the Sun that happens annually because of the planet’s elliptical orbit. At different times of the year, the Earth can be as little as 91.4 million miles away from the Sun and as much as 94.5 million miles. That 3.1 million mile fluctuation dwarfs any increase that comes from Earth’s growing orbit. The reason why the Earth is moving away from the largest body in our solar system shows that the solar system is aging. The primary driver behind the movement is the Sun’s continuous loss of mass. The Sun runs off of nuclear fusion, which converts its mass into energy that powers life on Earth. Thanks to Einstein, we know that matter and energy cannot be destroyed or created, only converted, which means the Sun’s mass is continually depleting. It will eventually lose 0.1% of its mass before it begins its death cycle billions of years into the future. ~ Ian DeMartino

News Burst 12 August 2022 - Cartwheel Galaxy

Cartwheel Galaxy

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has peered into the chaos of the Cartwheel Galaxy, revealing new details about star formation and the galaxy’s central black hole. Webb’s powerful infrared gaze produced this detailed image of the Cartwheel and two smaller companion galaxies against a backdrop of many other galaxies. The Cartwheel Galaxy, located about 500 million light-years away in the Sculptor constellation, is a rare sight. Its appearance, much like that of the wheel of a wagon, is the result of an intense event – a high-speed collision between a large spiral galaxy and a smaller galaxy.
