  • Violent clashes that broke out on the French island of Corsica overnight into Thursday following rallies in support of Corsican nationalist Yvan Colonna, who was sentenced to live imprisonment, left at least 40 people injured, media reported. According to the RMC broadcaster, demonstrations in support of Colonna turned into clashes with the police, leaving at least 14 people injured in the city of Ajaccio. Two people have been put in custody in the same city. Colonna is convicted for the 1998 assassination of then-French prefect in Corsica Claude Erignac and is serving his sentence in a French prison. In early March, he was beaten by another prisoner and hospitalized in critical condition, and has been in a coma ever since.

  • On Tuesday, the US State Department admitted the existence of American-funded “biological research facilities” in Ukraine, which were earlier discovered by the Russian armed forces during their ongoing special military operation in the country. The Pentagon conducted studies into bat coronaviruses not only in Ukraine-based bio labs, but also in many other countries, including Georgia and China, according to documents published on the US government orders portal. The documents showed that since 2017, such studies had been carried out by a secret US laboratory at the Richard Lugar Centre for Public Health Research in the Georgian capital Tbilisi. At the same time, it also turned out that the contractor company for the US Department of Defence (DOD) had studied bat coronaviruses in Wuhan, China, for several years (until March 2020), when the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the documents, the total amount of funding allocated for the implementation of the programme stood at about $10.2 million, of which $6.5 million went to Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Jordan. Some $3.7 million was earmarked for research in China.

  • The European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell has asked citizens to turn down the heating in their homes, as one way for the bloc to cut its dependence on Russian gas amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. “The challenges we face are going to require a very tough stance and we have to be willing to pay the price,” Borrell stated, suggesting, “European citizens lower the heating of their homes,” as part of their “individual effort to cut gas consumption.”

  • Russia could nationalize the assets of 59 major foreign brands that have decided to stop working in the country in protest against Moscow’s ongoing military offensive in Ukraine. The likes of Apple, IKEA, Microsoft, IBM, Shell, McDonald’s, Volkswagen, Porsche, Toyota, H&M and others have featured on the schedule compiled by consumer protection group the Public Consumer Initiative (OPI), according to a report in newspaper Izvestia on Thursday. The list isn’t final, Oleg Pavlov, the group’s head, told the outlet, adding that the police, the Trade Ministry and consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor will also be involved in work to expand it.

  • Igor Konashenkov, spokesperson for Russia’s Ministry of Defense, said that “experiments with samples of bat coronavirus were being carried out in the bio-laboratories, created and funded [by the US] in Ukraine, as documents show.” The Russian official went on to claim that in 2022 the US was intending to “work on bird, bat and reptile pathogens,” with plans to move on to research into whether those animals can “transmit African swine fever virus and anthrax.” According to Konashenkov, the scientists were looking into, among other things, the possibility of pathogen transmission by wild birds migrating between Russia, Ukraine and other neighboring countries.

  • The price of petrol has exceeded two euros per litre in many areas of France, with the latter being driven by market uncertainty following the imposition of anti-Russian sanctions by the US and its allies over Moscow’s ongoing special military operation in Ukraine. Rising fuel prices in France have prompted some residents to start mixing gasoline with ethanol, in an apparent effort to save money, Le Monde reports. Using ethanol in an engine results in minor breakdowns, which only damage small parts that are “not too expensive to change”, especially when it comes to weather-beaten vehicles.

  • Among the goals of the Biological Research laboratories in Ukraine suspected of having been funded by the United States was the creation of bioagents that would be capable of targeting certain ethnic groups, the Russian Defence Ministry revealed on Thursday. “The available documents confirm numerous cases of the transfer of biological samples of Ukrainian citizens abroad. With a high degree of probability, we can say that one of the tasks of the United States and its allies is the creation of bioagents that can selectively affect various ethnic groups of the population”, said Igor Kirillov, the head of the Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops of the Russian Armed Forces. Kirillov said that 350 cryocontainers with blood serum samples were transferred from the Public Health Centre of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to a reference laboratory for infectious diseases at Australia’s Doherty Institute under the pretext of determining antibody titers. The Russian Defence Ministry has obtained documents confirming that the high-risk biological research in Ukraine is led by US specialists. According to Kirillov, the documents also showed that the US Defence Department funded the biological research in Ukraine. The biological research funded by the US in Ukraine, according to Kirillov, included the projects “UP-2, UP-9, UP-10, aimed at studying the pathogens of anthrax and African swine fever”. The UP-4 project, in particular, is said to have been in development in laboratories in Kiev, Kharkov, and Odessa, and was scheduled until 2020. Per Kirillov, the Pentagon was also interested in insect vectors that can spread dangerous infectious diseases.
“The analysis of the received materials confirms the fact that more than 140 containers with ectoparasites of bats – fleas and ticks – were transferred from the biological laboratory in Kharkov abroad”, he elaborated.

  • A British teenager has left the country after signing up to fight for Ukraine, ITV News reported, citing the boy’s concerned mother.
Jamie from Warrington is 19 years old. It only took him 36 hours to find himself in Poland as a volunteer to fight Russian troops in Ukraine, even though he has no military background and he cannot speak either Ukrainian or Polish. According to his mother, who remained unnamed, her son simply emailed a site to volunteer before booking a one-way ticket, using a child’s passport to travel. She also said that Jamie, who is obsessed with the videogame Call of Duty, allegedly signed a two-year contract with the Ukrainian military despite his lack of the necessary experience.

  • Per a recent survey conducted by Cinch Home Services, a home warranty company, living in New York City has become so expensive that some people are ready to become sex workers to afford their rent. One in five respondents said they would start an account on OnlyFans (a popular subscription website, mostly known for porn) to make enough money to pay their bills.
