  • Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are very short bursts of radiation (only about a millisecond in duration) that flare brightly at radio frequencies. The majority of them come from distant galaxies, while our Milky Way has only one, and they’re extraordinarily bright, releasing as much energy in a moment as 500 million Suns. Just the second-ever example of a very active, repeated Fast Radio Burst with a confined source of weaker but persistent radio emission between bursts has been discovered by astronomers, revealing its “weird” nature, according to new research published in the journal Nature. The pulse, designated as FRB 20190520B, was discovered by China’s FAST (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope). On May 20, 2019, the burst reached Earth, and data from that telescope was discovered in November of that year. Unlike many other FRBs, 20190520B reportedly releases frequent, repetitive bursts of radio waves, according to follow-up observations. The object’s location was established by measurements with the VLA in 2020, which allowed visible-light studies with the Subaru telescope in Hawaii to demonstrate that it is in the outskirts of a dwarf galaxy roughly 3 billion light-years from Earth.

  • A 16-year-old girl in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu was allegedly forced to donate her oocytes to private fertility clinics on several occasions, prompting the police to arrest her mother, Soumiya, stepfather, Syed Ali, and middleman Malathi. On Friday, police summoned the owners of two clinics where she had allegedly donated eggs. On 4 June, the stepfather and mother of the victim girl were arrested after the minor fled her home due to depression and reached a relative’s place, where she revealed what she had gone through. The relative then filed an official complaint under the Protection of Children and Sexual Offence (POSCO) Act against her parents.

  • Algeria’s decision to suspend the treaty of friendship with Spain has caused extreme concern in the European Union. “The decision taken by Algeria to suspend the Treaty of friendship and good neighbourly relations signed with Spain in 2002 is of utmost concern. We are assessing the implications of the Algerian actions, including the instruction given to the financial institutions to stop transactions between the two countries, which upfront appear to be in violation of the EU-Algeria Association Agreement, in particular in the area of trade and investment,” the EU officials said in a joint statement.

  • The city of Amarillo, Texas, is soliciting guesses as to the identity of a so-called “Unidentified Amarillo Object,” offering netizens the chance to explain what was captured in a bizarre image published by the city’s zoo. According to the city’s authorities, cameras on the zoo’s perimeter captured footage of an unknown object on the other side of the facility’s fence at 1:30 am on May 21. The object’s silhouette is unrecognizable, albeit it appears to be supported from beneath by two lengthy legs. “Was it a person with a strange hat who likes to walk at night? A large coyote on its hind legs? A Chupacabra? It is a mystery – for Amarillo to help solve,” the city government said jokingly.

  • The disgraced Duke of York, has been keeping a low profile, skipping appearing with the rest of the royal family at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations due to contracting COVID-19. The prince was seen getting into the driver’s seat of his car and going for a ride outside the housing complex in photos obtained by the New York Post.

  • The US government supported 46 biological research facilities in Ukraine for the past 20 years, revealed the Pentagon on Thursday. In a document titled ‘Fact Sheet on WMD Threat Reduction Efforts,’ the US Department of Defense for the first time revealed the specific number of facilities its government has sponsored in Ukraine. The Pentagon claimed that these facilities were part of a peaceful public health project and were not focused on developing biological weapons, saying that the US has “worked collaboratively to improve Ukraine’s biological safety, security, and disease surveillance for both human and animal health,” by providing support to “46 peaceful Ukrainian laboratories, health facilities, and disease diagnostic sites over the last two decades.” The Pentagon insisted that the work of these biolabs was “often” carried out in collaboration with organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Only three laboratories in Ukraine possessed the required safety requirements to conduct the type of studies the Pentagon claimed to be engaged in, according to the Russian military. Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the head of the Radioactive, Chemical, and Biological Protection Forces, referenced Ukrainian government sources to point to a number of difficulties at one of those sites in Odessa, as an example. Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Alexander Venediktov revealed that the US network of closed biolaboratories around the world has more than 400 facilities, and their locations and zones of emergence of new epidemic threats coincide.

  • Japanese supercomputer Fugaku has lost bragging rights as the world’s fastest to U.S.-built Frontier, ending its two-year reign at the top. Fugaku fell to the second spot on the Top 500 supercomputer calculation speed ranking, announced on May 30. Aptly named after Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest peak, Fugaku had maintained its title as the fastest in the world since June 2020. In the latest ranking, Fugaku recorded the same speed as the previous year at 442 quadrillion calculations per second. However, Frontier from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which appeared for the first time on the list, ran at about 2.5 times faster. It broke through the exascale threshold to perform 1.102 quintillion calculations per second.

  • NASA’s Artemis 1 moon mission will be the agency’s first big step toward returning astronauts to the lunar surface. Formerly known as Exploration Mission 1 (EM-1), Artemis 1 will be the first test flight of the agency’s new Space Launch System megarocket and the Orion crew capsule. The SLS rocket will launch the uncrewed Orion spacecraft on an approximately 26-day mission, during which it will spend six days orbiting the moon before returning to Earth. Artemis 1 is currently scheduled to launch no earlier than late May 2022, from Launch Complex 39B at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
