  • The Chinese company Xiaomi announced the launch of a factory where only robots work. CEO Lei Jun said that the new factory in Beijing can operate 24 hours a day without people and produce 1 smartphone per second (10 million per year). Some machines will assemble gadgets, others will monitor the quality of their work, and others will maintain cleanliness inside the building. There are also production lines for automotive electronic parts inside. Xiaomi plans to further scale up robotic production.

  • Singapore has approved 16 insects to eat as food, in various stages of growth. In the adult stage are four crickets, two grasshoppers, a locust and a honeybee. In the larval stage are three kinds of mealworm, a white grub and a giant rhino beetle grub, as well as two species of moth. Silkworm moths and silkworms (different stages of the same species) can both be eaten, according to the guidelines. A Singaporean restaurant chain called House of Seafood is already gearing up to serve 30 insect-based dishes, the Straits Times reports, including sushi garnished with silkworms and crickets, salted egg crab with superworms, and “Minty Meatball Mayhem”: meatballs topped with worms.

  • Eton College has banned new pupils from bringing smartphones into school – and will issue them with a basic Nokia handset instead. The elite £52,000-a-year private school has written to families of its next cohort of Year 9 students to warn them of the new policy, which will begin in September. The world-famed establishment – whose pupils have included Princes William and Harry – has become the latest college to join the clampdown on smartphones. It comes amid raising concerns over the impact the hi-tech devices are having on children’s behaviour and mental health.

  • Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey is ready to host President Bashar al-Assad in the near future to start the process of resolving differences over Syrian Kurdistan. For Ankara and Damascus, which have long had extremely cold relations, the very fact of a meeting between the two leaders is already a sensation and a historic turning point.

  • Rwanda hints it won’t reimburse $300 million UK paid for deportation deal after new British PM says he’ll ditch agreement. A Rwandan government spokesperson said on Tuesday that its migrant deal with the UK did not include any “clause regarding reimbursement” after the newly-elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that he would scrap the controversial agreement. After the bill was passed in April this year, former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claimed the plan was introduced “to deter vulnerable migrants from making perilous crossings and break the business model of the criminal gangs who exploit them.”

  • Chinese customs officers caught a man trying to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into the country by stuffing them in his pants, local media reported on Tuesday. The suspicious-looking man was detained by officials last week as he attempted to enter the country through the non-declaration channel at Futian Port in Shenzhen, which is a checkpoint between Hong Kong and mainland China. Five species of snakes were later identified – milk snakes, western hognose snakes, corn snakes, Texas rat snakes, and bullsnakes. Four of the species are non-native to China, and therefore banned from being brought into the country without certification.

  • Warsaw has agreed to help Kiev’s mobilization efforts by calling on any military-age Ukrainian men in Poland to return home and join the fight against Russia. Under the terms of a bilateral security treaty signed by Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday, Warsaw will “encourage” Ukrainian citizens to return to their homeland “to serve in the armed forces… and other security and defense forces.” Kiev is struggling to conscript more troops to fight Russia, despite adopting a major reform earlier this year aimed at stamping out draft avoidance. Many Ukrainian men prefer to avoid mobilization, or even risk their lives by trying to illegally cross the border and flee to the EU, according to the Western media.

  • Saudi Arabia privately hinted earlier this year it would sell some (or all) of its European debt holdings if the G-7 confiscated Russia’s frozen assets. As a reminder, we noted in May the European Union had approved a US-backed plan to use profits and interest generated from Russian assets to help arm Ukraine; however that was a sharp reversal from the previously proposed plan – one which was heavily promoted by Zelensky and Ukraine – to confiscate some $300 billion in Russian assets. Many were wondering what prompted the reversal. Now we know, and as Bloomberg notes “the Kingdom’s finance ministry told some G-7 counterparts of its opposition to the idea, which was meant to support Ukraine, with one person describing it as a veiled threat.” The Saudis specifically mentioned debt issued by the French treasury, two of the people said.

  • In a letter written in Italian and English and addressed to Viganò on the blog of traditionalist publicist Aldo Maria Valli, Mel Gibson said that Pope Francis, AKA Jorge Bergoglio, was “illegitimate.” The actor’s letter came as the Vatican last Friday announced it had excommunicated Viganò over a “schism” with the church for refusing to recognize the authority of Pope Francis, who he’s referred to as “a servant of Satan.” Viganò had been openly critical of Pope Francis, including his handling of sexual abuse allegations, support for COVID-19 vaccines, the World Economic Forum’s Great Reset, and the promotion of an “inclusive, immigrationist, eco-sustainable, and gay-friendly” church.

  • [Hollywoodism] Take Me To The Moon – A comedy set against the backdrop of the moon landing. Called in to fix NASA’s public image, marketing expert Kelly Jones wreaks havoc on launch director Cole Davis’ already difficult job. When the White House deems the mission too important to fail, Jones is tasked with staging a fake Moon landing as a backup and the countdown truly begins… The film is based on a “true story”.

  • James Webb discovers a ‘super-Earth’ planet 48 light-years away – and it could have the right conditions to harbour life. The exoplanet LHS 1140 b is located 48 light years from Earth in the constellation Cetus. This makes it our nearest neighbouring planet to exist within its star’s ‘Goldilocks zone’ – the region in which water can exist as a liquid. This exoplanet is about six times the mass of Earth and orbits a small red dwarf star roughly one-fifth the size of our sun at a distance cool enough for water to potentially form.
