- The United States was spying on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, CNN reported, citing secret Pentagon documents leaked to the web. A source close to the head of the republic told CNN he was not surprised by this situation and called it “expected”. Note that Ukrainian officials are deeply disappointed by the leak. According to the channel, a US intelligence report based on electronic intelligence data says that Zelensky at the end of February “proposed striking the places of deployment of Russian troops in the Rostov region” using unmanned aerial vehicles, since Ukraine did not long have long-range weapons capable of achieving such goals. One still cannot rule out that the apparent leak was organized by some Pentagon dissenter, akin to Edward Snowden, according to Dmitry Kornev, military expert and founder of the Military Russia portal. He draws attention to the fact that the allegedly classified documents started seeping out on computer gaming forums and other non-specialized platforms where they were later found.
- The governing Labor and Center parties back in 2021 agreed on the need to raise taxes on Norway’s richest, with local media reporting the following year that the move prompted a number of wealthy Norwegians, such as Bjorn Daehlie, a multiple Olympic and world champion in cross-country skiing, to relocate abroad from the oil-rich Nordic nation. Norway is witnessing an exodus of the super wealthy at a record rate, a study has revealed. As more and more affluent people opt to move abroad to dodge the wealth levy rise, Switzerland is believed to be one of the top choice destinations for them.
- Swiss exports to Russia have not been affected significantly since Ukraine-related sanctions meant to isolate Moscow were imposed, Neue Zuericher Zeitung am Sonntag newspaper reported on Sunday. While trade in sectors like watches and machinery has come to a halt, exports of medicines to Russia hit record highs, data shows. The outlet found that Bern’s exports were dominated by pharmaceutical products, which surged 40% in the reported period.
- The latest WhatsApp novelty still focuses on privacy. To protect users, after the photos and videos that disappear as soon as they are opened and viewed, now there will be ephemeral voice messages. They will self-destruct and cannot be saved, forwarded or shared. Once again, it was the WABetaInfo blog that found the clues in the app’s preview code. The feature was identified in the Android beta number 2.23.7.8, and it’s unclear when it will be released to users.
- As emerging powers such as China, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, India and Russia forge new political and economic alliances, the “rules-based order” promoted by the US and the EU is harming their own economies, said energy analyst, Middle East expert and former Austrian top diplomat Karin Kneissl. According to Karin Kneissl, Moscow and Tehran have played important roles in the mediating process, which raised a few eyebrows in Washington. She underlined Moscow’s role in the Syria-Turkiye talks and pointed to the fact that in its recent bulletin, the White House expressed concern over “being sidelined, bysided, blind-sided, frustrated” in the process, with the “Assad must go” mantra losing its effectiveness on the NATO member state Turkiye.
- A photo posted on Twitter last week apparently showed that someone had papered over the ‘w’ on the sign outside the company’s San Francisco headquarters. While some Twitter users assumed the image had been photoshopped, Musk confirmed on Sunday that he had since ordered the letter to be painted over, changing the sign to read “Titter.” Musk said that as San Francisco law forbade him from removing the letter entirely, he simply had it changed to the same color as the sign’s background. “Problem solved!” he exclaimed. On Monday Musk changed his Twitter user name to “Harry Bolz,” for no apparent reason save for the obvious innuendo.
- Hungarian House Speaker Laszlo Kover has claimed that he received dozens of emails from Swedish and Finnish voters urging him to block their countries’ accession into NATO. Although Kover backed Finland’s successful membership bid, he claimed Budapest was betrayed by Helsinki immediately after the vote. The Hungarian parliament voted in favor of Finland joining NATO last month, days before a similar vote in Türkiye cleared the way for the Nordic nation to become the bloc’s 31st member. Finland and Sweden both renounced their neutrality and applied to join NATO last year, and although polls indicated that the majority of voters in both countries supported the move, neither government put the decision to a referendum.
- ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer, Juice, will make detailed observations of the giant gas planet and its three large ocean-bearing moons – Ganymede, Callisto and Europa – with a suite of remote sensing, geophysical and in situ instruments. The mission will characterise these moons as both planetary objects and possible habitats, explore Jupiter’s complex environment in depth, and study the wider Jupiter system as an archetype for gas giants across the Universe.
