Russia has denied accusations of limiting gas supplies to Europe in order to force Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Germany, which still needs to be approved by EU regulators. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday that Russia is delivering on its contractual obligations.

  • At least 46 people were killed and 143 others were injured as a result of an explosion in a Shia mosque in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, a local Health Department source told Sputnik on 9 October. “According to the latest data, 46 people died, 143 were injured”, the source said.

 

  • The USS Connecticut, a Seawolf-class nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, collided with an unknown underwater object on October 2 in the South China Sea. The incident took place in the highly contested South China Sea, most of which is claimed by the People’s Republic of China. Beijing demanded more information from Washington on the incident including the exact location of the accident, the intention of the US navigation, and whether it caused nuclear leakage or damaged the local marine environment.
    Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian suggested that the US deliberately delayed and concealed the details of the incident and accused Washington of stirring up trouble and creating tensions in the region in the name of freedom of navigation.

  • US President Joe Biden has declared that the limit on refugee admissions will be doubled for the 2022 fiscal year compared to 2021, reaching 125,000 people. The limit is spread unevenly between refugees from different regions, with Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia getting over half of the total admissions. Latin America and the Caribbean, which are the main sources of illegal migrants at the US southern border this year, only received 15,000 spots.

 

  • Suspected members of a Mexican cartel have been filmed firing rounds across the border into the United States, according to Fox News reporter Bill Melugin, who was behind the footage of the alleged machine-gun fire.   • Chancellor Sebastian Kurz stated on Saturday that he is resigning from his position due to the ongoing corruption probe against him being conducted by the Austrian prosecution. At the same time, he will remain a member of parliament and leader of the Austrian People’s Party. Kurz stressed that he made his decision in order to “make space” and to ensure that the nation has a “government that is stable”. “What we need now is stability. That’s why I want to step aside to help resolve this stalemate, prevent chaos and guarantee stability”, Kurz said.
