- A Polish deputy agriculture minister has proposed an “anti-bug law” which would require all food products containing insects to be labeled with a special warning. The move by the member of the ruling conservative party comes amid accusations that if progressive opposition parties win power during this year’s elections, they will push an Orwellian ‘eat the bugs’ campaign to restrict the consumption of traditional meat. The opposition has not formally announced any such plans, according to Notes from Poland. “Dried mealworm larvae, powdered cricket – these are among the insects that the eurocrats and Rafał Trzaskowski [the opposition mayor of Warsaw] call new food,” said Janusz Kowalski, a deputy agriculture minister, while unveiling the plans in parliament on Thursday. “That is why we, United Poland [Solidarna Polska], have initiated the preparation of legal regulations, following the examples of Hungary and Italy, that will give Polish consumers clear knowledge about food products containing so-called bug additives,” he continued. “This is an anti-bug law.”
- A jazz trumpeter has taken on Apple Music’s trademark overreach, winning a long-standing battle with the tech giant in a US appeals court. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit allowed trumpeter Charlie Bertini to block Apple’s bid for a federal Apple Music trademark covering live performances, arguing that the name would cause confusion with his “Apple Jazz” branding he has used since 1985. The court rejected Apple’s argument that it had priority over Bertini’s trademark rights based on its ownership of a trademark through the Beatles’ music label Apple Corps Ltd.
- There’s been dissatisfaction with the Standard Model, which begins with the Big Bang, ever since it was first proposed by Georges Lemaitre nearly a century ago. But no one expected the James Webb Space Telescope to contribute to the debate. Physicist Eric J. Lerner comes to the point: “To everyone who sees them, the new James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) images of the cosmos are beautifully awe-inspiring. But to most professional astronomers and cosmologists, they are also extremely surprising—not at all what was predicted by theory. In the flood of technical astronomical papers published online since July 12, the authors report again and again that the images show surprisingly many galaxies, galaxies that are surprisingly smooth, surprisingly small and surprisingly old. Why do the JWST’s images inspire panic among cosmologists? And what theory’s predictions are they contradicting? The papers don’t actually say. The truth that these papers don’t report is that the hypothesis that the JWST’s images are blatantly and repeatedly contradicting is the Big Bang Hypothesis that the universe began 14 billion years ago in an incredibly hot, dense state and has been expanding ever since. Since that hypothesis has been defended for decades as unquestionable truth by the vast majority of cosmological theorists, the new data is causing these theorists to panic. “Right now I find myself lying awake at three in the morning,” says Alison Kirkpatrick, an astronomer at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, “and wondering if everything I’ve done is wrong.” [Update: Kirkpatrick has protested Lerner’s handling of this quotation. See Note below.] ~ Eric J. Lerner, “The Big Bang Didn’T Happen” At Iai.Tv (August 11, 2022)
- The FBI has launched a social media campaign seeking to convince Russian nationals to provide sensitive information about the activities of their home country’s authorities, Fox News reported on Friday. The ad, which was first posted in February, has allegedly appeared on Twitter, Facebook and Google. “Do you want to change your future?” Alan Kohler, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division, says in the video shared online. “The FBI values you. The FBI can help you. But only you have the power to take the first step.” Fox News cited a source as saying that, although the Bureau has run ads targeting Russians in the past, this year it decided that “a video was more effective.”
- Alexander Soros, the son of billionaire and longtime Democratic Party donor George Soros, has made at least fourteen visits to the White House since Joe Biden took office, according to visitor logs seen by the New York Post. The younger Soros, 37, a noted Democratic Party fundraiser, met with Biden administration officials a minimum of twelve times last year, according to recently updated logs. He also visited twice in 2021. Alexander Soros is the chair of the liberal Open Society Foundations, whose remit, it says, is to provide grants to causes that promote “the growth of inclusive and vibrant democracies.”
- Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s crusade for free speech firstly led him to initiate the series of “Twitter files” publications, where the mechanism of disinformation were unmasked. Now, he is branding multiple western media with a special for their ties to authorities. Twitter has added a “Government Funded” tag on the BBC official account, predictably sparking criticism from the network. “We are speaking to Twitter to resolve this issue as soon as possible. The BBC is, and always has been, independent. We are funded by the British public through the licence fee,” a spokesman for the broadcaster said, as cited by media. Previously, the same measure was applied to NPR, which is closely affiliated with US authorities and most infamous for trying to silence the Hunter Biden laptop saga, which shed some light on unpleasant details of the life of the POTUS’ family.
- A more expanded document dump and leak of highly classified materials is being reported in the wake of the initial disclosure that memos related to US strategy in the Ukraine war appeared online, including material marked “Top Secret”. This time the leak appears more expansive: “A new batch of classified documents that appear to detail American national security secrets from Ukraine to the Middle East to China surfaced on social media sites on Friday, alarming the Pentagon and adding turmoil to a situation that seemed to have caught the Biden administration off guard,” The New York Times reported Friday evening.
- An apparent classified information leak, which resulted in what seems to be a batch of US documents related to the conflict in Ukraine being posted on social media, has left experts pondering on the significance of this development. Philip Giraldi, a former CIA station chief who now serves as executive director of a non-profit anti-war advocacy group the Council for the National Interest, told Sputnik that the significance of the leaked materials stems from the fact that they seem to be “highly classified” and have “presumably been leaked by someone senior in the hierarchy of the Pentagon.” He pointed out that the docs, which appear to be briefing materials for a “military audience,” date back to February and March and feature “limited tactical information.”
- Journalist Matt Taibbi helped the billionaire bring the truth to light about how censorship and Washington-backed propaganda work on social media by releasing several batches of the Twitter Files. Elon Musk has denied allegations that Twitter blocked the links of the online platform, Substack, and claimed that reporter Matt Taibbi, whom he trusted with disclosing the Twitter Files, was working for the rival platform. Musk’s reaction came on the heels of Taibbi’s Friday announcement that he was quitting Twitter, because the platform became, in the reporter’s words, “unusable”. Taibbi revealed that he would opt for Substack’s new Notes feature instead, after Twitter allegedly restricted tweets with Substack links on the platform, labelling them as “unsafe.”
- The Benin Bronzes are a collection of several thousand of brass sculptures from the palace of the ruler of the Benin Kingdom (modern-day Nigeria), dating back to at least the 16th century. Until now, research on the origins of the metals used in their casting provided no clear results, but a new study shed light on this scientific mystery. The initial source of the brass the Benin Bronzes was produced in Germany and likely shipped to western Africa, a recent study published by the journal PlOS One, has revealed. At the center of the story are so-called manillas, horseshoe-shaped rings made of brass, which were used as the currency of the Portuguese trade in the 16th and 17th centuries. Historians have repeatedly expressed an assumption that European manillas from Great Britain, Germany or Scandinavia were used for the production of the Benin artifacts. However, they had no empirical evidence. Now, Tobias Skowronek, a geochemist from the Technical University Georg Agricola, Bochum, Germany, along with his colleagues and co-writers, has provided the first evidence that the brass material came from Europe and could be even the only source of raw materials for the West African foundry industry.
- While a trio of objects downed by the US military in the aftermath of the “Chinese balloon affair” turned out to be terrestrial in origin, a former US Navy pilot has insisted that the truth is still out there. Lieutenant Ryan Graves is an F/A-18 Super Hornet pilot who previously shared how his squadron encountered UFOs – or UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon), as they are referred to nowadays – during training flights in restricted airspace off the coast of Virginia. Now, he has told a British newspaper that people who are “still flying out there” keep encountering these strange things. “Some of them were describing cubes and spheres. I have heard it described over the course of eight or nine years, basically the same object being reported. Also, nondescript, white objects are reported as well,” he said. “We have to be aware that there are objects in our airspace and we are not fully aware of what they are.”
- There were several mass extinctions in the geological history of Earth. Scientists have just discovered another one, and in this case, Chinese volcanoes are to blame. There was an additional mass die-off in the geological period between 264.28 million and 259.51 million years ago known as the Capitanian mass extinction event, in the Permian stage, according to a study led by researcher Huyue Song at the China University of Geosciences. The paper was published in the peer-reviewed journal, Earth and Planetary Science Letters. Roughly 260 million years ago, an event occurred, known as the Permian–Triassic extinction, which killed off 81% of marine species and 70% of terrestrial vertebrate species. This was the biggest catastrophe that ever occurred on Earth, and the alleged reason was the sudden eruption of Siberian Traps. The new research shows that the Permian–Triassic extinction event was followed by another – yet unnamed – die-off, which happened 3 million years later. Once again, the culprit is the eruption of volcanoes, this time, the nearby Emeishan Traps, in China’s southwest.

Indonesia
In the province of East Java, Indonesia, the gigantic Kawah Ijen volcanic complex stretches over 22 kilometres. Apart from its colossal dimensions, the volcano located here is eye-catching because of another aspect: the lava. But what causes the incredible and fascinating appearance of the ‘lava’ of the Kawah Ijen volcano? This phenomenon is explained by chemistry. The blue ‘lava’ actually arises from the burning of sulphur, a gas that is released from the earth, under high pressure and temperature, together with the molten rock.
