News Burst 1 October 2020 - Jupiter Storm

Jupiter’s Storms

NASA’s Juno space probe in 2019 spotted a collection of swirling storms arranged in an unusually geometric pattern has been a mystery to most scientists. Andy Ingersoll, a Caltech professor of planetary science who was a member of the Juno team, said Jupiter’s storms are notably similar to the ones that hit the U.S. East Coast every summer and fall, but on a larger scale. “The winds would be hurricane-force winds. Hurricanes on Earth are a good analog of the individual vortices within these arrangements we see on Jupiter, but there is nothing so stunningly beautiful here.” Jupiter’s storms tend to form near the equator and then move toward the poles, as on Earth. However, hurricanes and typhoons in our planet dissipate before they drift too far from the equator. Meanwhile, Jupiter’s storms keep going until they arrive on the poles. “The difference is that on the earth hurricanes run out of warm water and they run into continents,” Ingersoll added. Jupiter has no land, “so there’s much less friction because there’s nothing to rub against. There’s just more gas under the clouds. Jupiter also has heat leftover from its formation that is comparable to the heat it gets from the sun, so the temperature difference between its equator and its poles is not as great as it is on Earth.”

News Burst 1 October 2020 - Amazon

Insider Trading

An Amazon.com Inc senior manager and her two family members were charged with insider trading by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. Laksha Bohra is alleged to have tipped her husband Viky Bohra about highly confidential information about the e-commerce giant’s financial performance between January 2016 and July 2018, the SEC said in a statement. According to SEC, the Amazon manager came into possession of the information as she prepared and reviewed earnings calculations used to finalize numbers for the retailer’s quarterly and annual earnings filed with the regulator. The SEC’s complaint, filed in a federal court in Seattle, states that Viky Bohra and his father Gotham Bohra used the information to trade using 11 separate accounts maintained by different members of the family. The family allegedly reaped benefits to the tune of $1.4 million from the unlawful trading. In 2017, the SEC had charged another employee of the e-commerce giant for leaking sensitive information to a college friend for financial gain.

Chinese Laundry

A Chinese national was sentenced today to five years in prison and ordered to forfeit more than $4.2 million for laundering drug proceeds generated by large-scale cocaine trafficking in the United States. According to court documents, Xueyong Wu, 40, cultivated relationships with Latin American drug trafficking organizations to transport and launder their United States-based drug proceeds. Much of this money was repatriated to Mexico through a complex series of international financial transactions. Wu received a percentage of the money involved in these transactions as compensation for organizing these laundering activities. Much of this money was generated through movement of cocaine or payment for cocaine that took place within the Eastern District of Virginia.

“Twitter Killer”

A Japanese man dubbed the “Twitter killer” for luring his victims on social media admitted in court Wednesday (Sep 30) to killing nine people, local media said. But lawyers for Takahiro Shiraishi, 29, argued the charges should be reduced because the victims – who had expressed suicidal thoughts – gave their consent to be killed. Shiraishi, who is also accused of dismembering his victims and storing body parts in coolboxes, did not contest nine counts of murder, saying they “are all correct”, public broadcaster NHK reported. More than 600 people lined up for 13 public gallery seats to observe Wednesday’s first hearing, NHK said. If convicted of murder Shiraishi faces the death penalty, which is carried out by hanging in Japan.

News Burst 1 October 2020 - Dark Energy

Dark Energy

A team of experts have achieved a major cosmology goal by precisely measuring the total amount of matter in the entire universe. The research reveals that more than two thirds of everything is made up of β€˜dark energy.’ We’ve long known that the universe is really, really big. More recent research has indicated that it was made from three components: Matter, Dark Matter And Dark Energy. However, unravelling exactly how much of each of these components there is has been extremely difficult to figure out. But a team of cosmologists from the University of California, Riverside, believe they have finally done it. According to their calculations, just less than one third (31 percent) of the universe is made up of both matter and dark matter. Absolutely everything else is dark energy. β€œHowever, since we know 80 percent of matter is actually dark matter, in reality, most of this matter consists not of hydrogen atoms but rather of a type of matter which cosmologists don’t yet understand.”

News Burst 1 October 2020 - Reptile Trade

Pet Reptiles

More than a third of reptile species are bought and sold online in often-unregulated international trade, researchers said Tuesday, warning of the impact on wild populations of a pet market that puts a bounty on rare and newly discovered animals. Even endangered species and those with small habitats – such as the speckled cape tortoise and Seychelles tiger chameleon – are bought and sold in online forums, according to the new study by researchers in Thailand and China, who found that three-quarters of trade is in species not covered by international regulation. The market primarily caters to buyers in Europe and North America – the British Federation for Herpetologists has reported that there are more pet reptiles than dogs in Britain. But unlike most other pets, the study found that 90% of traded reptile species and half of traded individuals are captured from the wild.
