  • The United States has started bulk buying Japanese seafood to supply its military there in response to China’s ban on such products imposed after Tokyo released treated water from its crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea. Unveiling the initiative in a Reuters interview on Monday, U.S. ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel said Washington should also look more broadly into how it could help offset China’s ban that he said was part of its “economic wars”.

  • Meta announced Monday that starting in November, users older than 18 in Europe can subscribe to an ad-free version of the platforms for 9.99 euros a month on desktop and 12.99 euros on iOS or Android devices. The company is launching the subscription as a way to comply with a ruling by the E.U.’s top court stating that, under the union’s data privacy laws, it must obtain consent before showing ads to users. The strict rules limit Meta’s ability to tailor ads by tracking users’ online activity. In the new subscription model, users who choose not to pay technically consent to being served ads, according to a Meta news release.

  • After almost ten years of silence, Subcomandante Marcos, leader of the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico, returns to life with a letter in which he announces the death of his alter ego, Sub Comandante Galeano. It is a name that he had assumed after handing over the reins of the EZLN in 2014 to subcomandante Moisés, the first replacement of the new generation.

  • Vietnam is in talks with semiconductor firms to set up the first microchip factory in the southeast Asian nation. But US tech industry leaders have sought to scotch the plan with claims it would be a waste of public money. US micro giant Intel already has its largest testing and packaging plant in Vietnam, but the socialist republic is seeking to persuade companies to build high-tech manufacturing plants there. Vu Tu Thanh, head of the Vietnam office of the US-ASEAN Business Council, told media that meetings with half-a-dozen US chipmakers had taken place in recent weeks. The Vietnamese government said on Monday that semiconductor firms would be offered “the highest incentives available in Vietnam” to set up shop there.

  • According to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s social media post, the attendees of the European Council meeting received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech with a sense of apathy. The President of Ukraine addressed the European Council via video link on October 26. “I wasn’t surprised to see that Zelensky’s address at the European Council meeting was met with indifference. Times are changing; not too long ago, he received applause everywhere. But now, in some legislative chambers, they don’t even allow him to speak, like what happened in the United States,” stated Fico.

  • FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday said that the bureau no longer pays money to moderate content on X (formerly known as Twitter). “I’m not aware of us paying money to moderate content there [X, formerly known as Twitter] or anywhere else,” Wray stated during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing, when asked about the FBI’s financial involvement in social media content moderation. Information released as part of the so-called Twitter Files, shared by reporters in coordination with Twitter CEO Elon Musk, revealed the FBI’s considerable influence over the company and alleged an organized effort by the US intelligence community to exert control over certain information, including the Hunter Biden laptop story.

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had to pause his testimony during Tuesday’s hearing several times as protestors screamed, chanted, held up signs, and were eventually removed by security officers. In one case, a man yelled at Blinken to “stop supporting the genocide and ethnic cleansing of the people of Palestine.” Each time he was interrupted, Blinken stopped speaking and blankly stared straight forward, without reacting to the demonstrators. He testified in support of Biden’s request for Congress to approve $106 billion in emergency security funding, including $14.3 billion for Israel and $61.4 billion for Ukraine.

  • The Third World War is already underway, Fyodor Lukyanov, Russia’s leading foreign policy expert, has said. A world order that has been “unpleasant” but “manageable” is being broken down and currently there seems to be no mechanism for the resolution of conflicts, including the ongoing escalation between Israel and Hamas, he believes. Lukyanov, who is chairman of the presidium at the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy (SVOP) think tank and editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs magazine, made the remarks in an interview published last week by newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda. Of late, the world has been seen old, frozen conflicts being re-ignited, Lukyanov said, citing the Nagorno-Karabakh hostilities, the Russia-Ukraine standoff and the new escalation in the Middle East as examples.

  • Israel can no longer be found on China’s leading online digital maps on platforms including Baidu and Alibaba, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing web users. According to the report, Baidu’s Chinese language maps still show the borders of both Israel and the Palestinian territories, as well as key cities in the region. However, they no longer identify Israel by name. Alibaba’s Amap also no longer displays the name of Israel. According to the report, the platform is usually known for its attention to details, with even small countries like Luxembourg clearly labeled.

  • US President Joe Biden announced on Monday that he intends to remove the Central African Republic (CAR), Gabon, Niger, and Uganda from America’s flagship trade initiative, the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), citing non-compliance with participation requirements. “I am taking this step because I have determined that the Central African Republic, Gabon, Niger, and Uganda do not meet the eligibility requirements” of the AGOA, Biden said in a letter to the US Senate.

  • The personal details of 815 million Indians were recently put up for sale on a dark web forum, Indian media reported on Monday. The leak was revealed by US-based cybersecurity firm Resecurity, which reported the breach earlier this month. According to the company, the stolen data includes Aadhaars (individual identification numbers that serve as proof of identity in India) and passport details, names, phone numbers, and both temporary and permanent addresses of millions of Indian citizens. The data was listed for sale by a hacker using the alias ‘pwn0001,’ in a thread on Breach Forums, offering access to 815 million “Indian Citizen Aadhaar & Passport” records on October 9, Resecurity said. The company’s investigation unit, HUNTER, contacted the seller, who reportedly said he would sell the entire dataset for $80,000.

  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been asked to intervene after US tech giant Apple warned a number of politicians and public figures in the country that their iPhones have likely been compromised in a “state-sponsored” attack. Opposition MP Priyanka Chaturvedi wrote to Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday, calling for action after receiving a notification from Apple regarding a possible government-linked attack. The notification suggested that they may have been targeted by “state-sponsored attackers,” who may have been trying to compromise their iPhones because of “who you are or what you do.”

  • Western media is again spreading rumors about a sudden deterioration in the health of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and even his possible death. The source of these rumors is an anonymous Telegram channel allegedly linked to Valery Solovey, a notorious conspiracy theorist. The Kremlin regularly dismisses such statements as false and the president appears to be in good shape. Moreover, no one can find any proof that Putin’s health is in danger. Meanwhile, as the scandalous “insider information” continues to spread, its sources fail to become any more credible. So how did a Russian hoaxer and conspiracy theorist become a source of “sensational world news?” On Friday, The Daily Mail published an article with the scandalous title: “Vladimir Putin is NOT dead: Kremlin issues extraordinary denial to ‘lies’ that Russian tyrant, 71, ‘died at his luxury Valdai forest palace’ – amid claims a ‘coup’ was underway in Moscow.” ~ Christina Sizova

  • Two large “pristine” coral reefs were discovered last week off the coast of the Galápagos Islands in South America, according to an international group of scientists at the Schmidt Ocean Institute. In contrast to the shallow reefs scuba divers may be familiar with, deep-water reefs thrive without sunlight in cold, dark conditions. The ones recently discovered are as long as half a mile and rest a quarter of a mile beneath the surface on the ocean floor. They are said to be thousands of years old. The discovery was made by a remotely-operated vehicle examining the sea floor with laser scanners. Scientists say the high-resolution maps resulting from the discovery will aid in conservation of animals and future research.

  • [ Read Critically ] NASA’s newest X-ray space telescope has captured a ghostly view of a stellar explosion whose remains resemble a skeleton hand in deep space and just in time for Halloween. The “ghostly hand” — formally known as MSH 15-52 — was created by the the death of a massive star. This catastrophic event, called a supernova explosion, left behind a fast-spinning, superdense stellar corpse known as a pulsar. Pulsars are rotating neutron stars that have strong magnetic fields, which create powerful jets of charged particles and intense wind that forms what is known as a pulsar wind nebula. The pulsar PSR B1509-58 is located near the center of the image — or the base of the palm of MSH 15-52 — and injects particles into space, creating a glowing shape that resembles a human hand, according to a statement from NASA.

Archaeo – Histories

Holy Trinity Church, a historical building in Hrastovlje, a village in southwestern Slovenia, it is a Romanesque church from 12th Century CE. Church stands behind a wall that local population built to protect itself from Turkish attacks in 16th Century CE. Such defensive architectures are found throughout territory settled by Slovenians and are called tabor. Church in Hrastovlje differs from all other pilgrim churches in that its bell-tower is located on western side and in that all other pilgrim churches have small wooden towers. Church is 11.7 metres long and 6.05 metres wide and thereby one of the smallest churches in the area. The church has been painted with Gothic frescoes by Johannes de Castua, who finished his work on 1490. The most famous of these frescoes is a Dance of Death or “Danse Macabre”. 📷 : Credit to the Owner
