- An urgent investigation was ordered by the Royal Navy after maintenance workers used glue to fix damage in a nuclear reactor on a Trident submarine. The shoddy repair work was discovered by the sub’s engineers as they prepared to fire up the reactor to full power for the first time. The HMS Vanguard is part of a four-strong class of nuclear-powered submarines whose role is to carry Trident ballistic missiles. Vital maintenance work on the sub has been going on since 2015. However, the work is almost four years late and has overshot its budget by £300million.
- Australia’s nuclear safety agency said it had joined the hunt for a tiny radioactive capsule missing somewhere in the outback, sending a team with specialized car-mounted and portable detection equipment. Authorities have now been on a week-long search for the capsule which is believed to have fallen from a truck that made a 1,400 km journey in Western Australia.
- Biden’s administration said it will end COVID emergency declarations on May 11, nearly three years after the United States imposed sweeping pandemic measures to curb the spread of the illness.
- A group of Swiss lawmakers has moved forward a proposal to allow countries to give Swiss-made weapons to Ukraine, in a move that would soften Switzerland’s centuries-old policy of neutrality toward foreign conflicts. “The majority of the committee believes Switzerland must offer its contribution to European security, which requires more substantial aid to Ukraine,” the Swiss parliamentary security committee said in a statement.
- President Joe Biden’s administration released more than 1,300 criminal illegal aliens in a single month, according to recently disclosed statistics. Immigration officials released 521 convicted criminal aliens and 795 with pending criminal charges in December 2022, per data released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Most of the releases stemmed from orders of recognizance, or an interim determination that the alien in question is “not a detention priority.” “The law explicitly requires that those who cross the border illegally be detained, but the Biden administration clearly doesn’t want to detain or deport anyone. So it isn’t surprising that they are releasing criminal aliens as well,” Ron Kovach, press secretary at the Federation for American Immigration Reform, told The Epoch Times via email. “Public safety and the rule of law are under attack to advance their radical open borders agenda.”
- The House Judiciary Committee’s first meeting of the new Congress, led by Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), will be “The Biden Border Crisis: Part I.” Then, the House Energy and Commerce investigations subcommittee will hold a hearing titled: “Challenges and Opportunities to Investigating the Origins of Pandemics and Other Biological Events,” as part of its probe into the origins of Covid-19. Republicans now have control over committee hearing topics, a better chance of getting answers from administration officials, and are armed with subpoena power to compel testimony and documents — though no committee has used it yet.
- An Iowa woman was charged after allegedly scamming $37,000 from donors by lying that she has pancreatic cancer and a tumor the size of a football on her spine. Madison Marie Russo, 19, was arrested on January 23 after medical professionals reported she was faking a stage 2 cancer diagnosis by pointing out the irregularities of cords and tubes in her ‘chemo’ TikTok videos. She has been charged with theft by means of deception and could face up to 10 years in jail.
- The Italian National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) said Tuesday that its “Laura Bassi” icebreaker has touched the southernmost part of Antarctic ever reached by a ship, getting to a latitude of 78° 44.280S. The feat was made during the 38th Italian expedition for the National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA).
- The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or Webb) returned to full science operations on Monday (Jan. 30), recovering from a glitch that affected one of its instruments. The Webb team conducted days of testing and evaluation after a “communications delay” on Jan. 15 caused issues with the telescope’s Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) instrument, according to a Tuesday (Jan. 31) statement(opens in new tab) from NASA.
