- The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the state news agency of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), has recently accused the US of being a “sponsor of biological terrorism”, adding that allegations that Washington is behind the COVID-19 pandemic are “by no means fortuitous”. Pyongyang’s assumptions with regard to Washington’s potential role in the COVID-19 pandemic apparently stem from a bombshell report by professors Jeffrey D Sachs and Neil L Harrison, published in May 2022 by peer-reviewed multidisciplinary scientific journal, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS). “Prof Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University had spent two years as chairman of the Lancet Commission on COVID and recently published a major paper in the prestigious PNAS journal arguing that the virus was very likely artificial, also calling for an independent inquiry into its possible American origins, but virtually all western media outlets ignored his dramatic reversal,” says Ron Unz, an American technology entrepreneur, political activist, writer and the publisher of the Unz Review.
- According to TimeAndDate.com, on 29 June Earth completed one rotation in 1.59 milliseconds less than 24 hours, which appears to be the fastest spin since scientists started using atomic clocks in the 1960s to track the rotational speed of our planet. As the website points out, while Earth’s spin is slowing in general, it actually fluctuates “within this general pattern, and thus sometimes our planet can complete one rotation a little faster, by a “fraction of a millisecond.” In 2020, Earth also appeared to be speeding up, completing its daily rotations faster than usual on 28 occasions, with the quickest of them taking 1.47 milliseconds less than normal, and it appears to be speeding up to this day.
- TikTok channel “Robot Overloards,” touted as a provider of “daily disturbing Ai generated images,” has recently attracted quite a bit of attention online thanks to a couple of macabre short videos. The videos share the same premise, and are captioned simply “Asking an Ai to show the last selfie ever taken.” Each video features a collection of images that show disfigured humans staring at the camera, with apocalyptic landscapes seen behind them.
- Spanish textiles, leather and accessories trade and business association Acotex has lashed out at Prime Minister Sanchez over his dubious appeal to Spaniards to go necktie-free. In an address on Friday, a Sanchez appeared sans-tie to urge office workers, ministers and public sector officials not to wear a tie when it’s not necessary. “I would like you to note that I am not wearing a tie,” the prime minister said at a news conference. “That means that we can all save from an energy point of view.” Sanchez did not specify exactly how ditching ties would cut Spain’s energy consumption, although sympathetic media suggested it may have something to do with lower air conditioning costs.
- A grain elevator in the port of Beirut in Lebanon has partially collapsed due to fire raging in the blast-affected facility for over three weeks now, the National News Agency (NNA) reported on Sunday. The fire started on July 7 in facilities storing grain since the August 2020 blast. The authorities’ explanation is that over the years, grain started releasing flammable gases as a result of fermentation and eventually caught fire.
- A new study sheds light on the processes that transpired deep within our planet millions of years ago and led to a veritable “explosion of life” on Earth, as ScienceAlert put it. The team behind the new research postulates that the solid inner part of Earth’s core proceeded to crystalize and turn into a much larger mass around 550 million years ago. This process helped restore the Earth’s magnetic field, which protects life on the planet from harmful solar radiation and which had become depleted about 15 million years earlier. “Right before the inner core started to grow, the magnetic field was at the point of collapse, but as soon as the inner core started to grow, the field was regenerated,” said John Tarduno, professor of geophysics at the University of Rochester in New York. “This research really highlights the need to have something like a growing inner core that sustains a magnetic field over the entire lifetime – many billions of years – of a planet.”
- [What?] Last week, Gallup, which has been measuring the audiences’ confidence in newspapers since 1973 and television news since 1993, presented the results of its latest poll on the confidence in US news media, showing that only 11% have a great deal/quite a lot of confidence in TV news, while 16% have the same degree of confidence in newspapers. “The lack of trust in media goes along with the decline in trust in other institutions, including government. People have been told for years that they can’t trust institutions, and now, thanks to media deregulation (which paved the way for partisan channels and websites), numerous sources can regularly tell their audience that only OUR channel can be trusted but everyone else’s is just filled with lies,” Donna Halper, a professor of communication and media studies at Lesley University, said.
- Germany should stop using gas to generate electricity in order to avoid augmenting the energy crisis, Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Sunday. “We must work to ensure that the gas crisis does not lead to a crisis in electricity generation. Therefore, electricity should no longer be produced using gas. [Economy Minister] Robert Habeck has the power to prohibit it. We must maintain other capabilities instead. A lot of things speak in favor of not shutting down safe and sustainable nuclear power plants but using them if necessary until 2024,” Lindner told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper.
- Prince Charles accepted around $1.2 million from the family of Osama bin Laden, for the Prince of Wales Charitable Fund (PWCF), The Sunday Times reports. The one million pounds came from bin Laden’s half-brothers, Bakr bin Laden and Shafiq, the newspaper said on Saturday, specifying that Prince Charles met with them at Clarence House in London on October 30, 2013, two years after Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in Pakistan. There were objections from the PWCF and Clarence House advisers, but Charles still took the offering, which went to the PWCF, according to The Sunday Times.
- The shipments of Russian-made hypersonic missile systems Zircon to the Russian armed forces will start in the coming months, President Vladimir Putin said on Sunday during a Navy Day parade. - Elon Musk formally responded to Twitter’s lawsuit that is seeking to force him to complete the $44 billion acquisition of the social media company, The Wall Street Journal reported. The report said on Friday that Musk filed counterclaims against Twitter’s lawsuit, but the details are not viewable to the public as it was made confidentially. However, claims may be available sometime within the next week. The trial for Twitter’s lawsuit against Musk is set to start on October 17. Musk has argued the volume of fake accounts on Twitter is higher than the 5% the company had reported as a basis for the deal he had agreed to in April. The Journal reported that Musk’s response also included a Warren Buffet quote: “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.” It’s speculated the note is in reference to Musk’s claims of bot Twitter accounts.
- At least twice before, according to reports, China has permitted rocket stages to fall back to Earth on their own. Last year, after pieces of a Chinese rocket fell in the Indian Ocean, NASA accused China with “failing to meet responsible standards regarding their space debris.” US Space Command reported that debris from a large Chinese booster rocket Long March 5B returned to Earth on Saturday. According to a statement on Twitter, around 12:45 pm EDT (UTC -4), the former rocket reentered Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean. There was no information available right away about any debris or damage brought on by the rocket’s unplanned return.
- The plane crash victim reportedly appears to have either fallen from the plane or jumped from it prior to the emergency landing. After reported landing gear malfunctions, a twin-engine cargo airplane made an emergency landing at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in North Carolina on Friday, the local media reported. According to the report, a CASA C-212 twin-engine turboprop light cargo aircraft made an emergency landing at the runway. The body of a 27-year-old male, whose identity has not been released, has been found. In Fuquay-Varina, the victim was reportedly discovered close to Sunset Lake Road and Hilltop Needmore Road.
- Ukrainian forces airdropped banned PFM-1 anti-personnel landmines on the capital of the Donetsk People’s Republic on Wednesday night, Mayor Aleksey Kulemzin said. The mayor wrote on his Telegram channel that mines were discovered on several streets in the northwestern part of the city.
“A bomb squad and rescuers have been working on the site since the early morning. A vehicle equipped with a loudspeaker is alerting local residents,” Kulemzin said, urging people to be vigilant and not approach the mines. The small butterfly-shaped PFM-1 landmines are banned under the 1997 Ottawa Convention, of which Ukraine is part. Even when they do not kill the victim when stepped on, they often rip the person’s foot off.
- “Based on current economic and market trends, global coal consumption is forecast to rise by 0.7% in 2022 to 8 billion tons, assuming the Chinese economy recovers as expected in the second half of the year… This global total would match the annual record set in 2013, and coal demand is likely to increase further next year to a new all-time high,” the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a coal market update report published on Thursday. According to the agency, demand is being driven up by rising natural gas prices, forcing many countries to increasingly switch from gas to coal and reopen previously closed coal-fired power plants.
- “The first vessel with grain from Ukraine may leave tomorrow morning,” Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Sunday, as cited by Turkish newspaper Star. According to the official, several ships have already been loaded and readied for departure. “There are one or two small problems left, if they are solved before the evening, there is a possibility of going out [to sea] tomorrow morning,” he added. According to CNN Turk, the first caravan carrying Ukrainian grain will consist of 16 dry cargo ships. They are scheduled to reach Turkish territorial waters on August 3, escorted by drones. In addition, the passage of the vessels will be monitored by representatives of the Istanbul-based Joint Coordination Center (JCC) via satellites.
