  • On Thursday, The New York Times reported that US intelligence agencies had told President Trump that Russia was planning to meddle in the 2020 election to help reelect him. Fresh claims about ‘Russian meddling’ in the 2020 US elections are “paranoid” nonsense, but can only be expected to increase as the November vote nears, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Friday.
  • The seven-day “reduction of violence“ deal promised by the Taliban will begin on Friday night, a senior U.S. State Department official said, without specifying the exact time. That will start the countdown to the signing of a peace agreement between the Taliban and the United States at the end of the month. That peace agreement, to be signed in Doha, Qatar, on Feb. 29, will pave the way for a withdrawal of U.S. troops and intra- Afghan negotiations. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the peace agreement will also lead to an eventual permanent cease-fire.

  • This week clerical abuse survivors from around the world have flocked to Rome to mark the one-year anniversary of Pope Francis’s global summit on child protection, which took place at the Vatican in February of last year. Groups such as Bishops Accountability and Ending Clergy Abuse, two prominent American advocacy organizations, have put together a week of events in Rome and Geneva designed to offer an evaluation of progress made and gaps that still need to be filled. Things got started with a press conference from Bishops Accountability on Monday, during which survivors and advocates were honest in recognizing progress made since the summit, but largely critical of the follow-up, arguing that enforcement of new procedures is still unclear, and many bishops haven’t implemented them at all.

Galileo – Jupiter

After Galileo had finished its mission, NASA decided it was time to plunge the probe into Jupiter. On September 21st 2003 the probe slammed into Jupiter carrying with it a nuclear payload. Nothing was said about what the result was until October of 2003 when it was reported that there was a enormous black smudge on the planet’s surface. The spot was 7.900 miles wide. It was speculated that when Galilee exploded above Jupiter, its plutonium payload ignited the hydrogen filled atmosphere and caused a chain reaction. The explosion was 2,800 times the size of the largest atomic bomb that had ever been detonated on planet earth. That bomb was the largest ever made at 50 megatons. When it was detonated on earth it caused a fireball that was about 2.8 miles in diameter.
